After being honored by Pope Hazem of Veluna, King Nathan of Furyondy, and Countess Katarina of the Shield Lands, Tandris gathers a group of heroes to immediately re-enter Dorakaa in order to rescue the dozens and dozens of imprisoned souls. The telepath's concern is that without Iuz' oversight, the BEST these unfortunately can hope for is a slow, painful death by starvation and dehydration. Far worse is that these people are trapped in their cells and therefore unable to even try to escape any marauding vampires or nabbasu who might choose to feed on their very souls! Answering the call are Prince Garlok with Timrith, Mizzrie, Aeronne, Pudic, Saanau, Helga, Cliffy, Ichi, Anasta, Dion, and Skye.
The heroes gather in Cliffy's magical house and Tandris shadow walks into the illusionist's quarters in the third level of the Iuz' dungeons. At first, the heroes have an easy time, but are quickly attacked by seven vampires -- three full-strength ones and four recently-turned. The party is able to defeat the undead, but not stake them. As a result, the heroes are forced to fight the same vampires several times and more lesser vampires join the fight as well. The clerics, Mizzrie, Helga, and Dion, finally each cast dust devils to gather the gaseous forms, but even then before the heroes can do much else, more than one vampire re-coalesce and attack! At one point, a female vampire flees and returns with a babau; the heroes manage to slay the fiend even though the blood-sucker escapes again.
Finally, the heroes manage to defeat, stake, and suck up the gaseous forms of two full-strength and seven less vampires. Meanwhile, Timrith quaffs a potion of polymorph and assumes the form of a bullette. Saanau casts fly on the young dragon so that he can use his skill in burrowing to create a tunnel in the elevator chamber to the surface. With Garlok and Saanau, as well as later Aeronne, the young dragon manages to reach the ground level before he is halted by bar-llgura. The demons dispel most of the magics. The creatures nearly kill Timrith and it's only with Saanau and Garlok's intense support that he survives. All the spells on him dispelled, after he's healed, Timrith drinks another potion and receives another fly from Saanau before burrowing through the first level ceiling and into the quarters of ogres. The heroes barely survive the battle, but do not manage to punch a hole in the roof!
