Yavin has a vision: the party will battle beholders; he also sees a group of 5 figures, but he doesn’t know how they figure into the scheme of things: a telepathic child, a skilled archer, a natural mage, a handsome noble, and a “Renaissance man.”
After five days to recover from temporal shock, Kinsa awakens and notices that Hamish is getting awfully cozy with his new axe.
Borlon offers to transport the heroes (Idky, Yavin, Athos, Artec, Hamish, Kinsa, and Sabrina) to his city, Old Neshfal, for some rest and to re-supply before continuing. The party gratefully accepts. The plateau where the city is has been “cleansed,” so the food grown there is suitable for consumption. They are introduced to Ishmopah, a priest of Sekhmet. Yavin also gets blown by an undead-looking “woman” who apparently has no skin, just bones.
During their stay there, Kinsa voices her concern about Hamish to Sabrina. Sabrina concocts a plan to test him. She asks to inspect the axe, but instead turns it invisible. Hamish reacts very poorly. Only the intervention of the party keeps him from strangling her. He storms off. A know alignment from Idky determines that the axe is chaotic evil, and Hamish is lawful good with chaotic evil tendencies. Since such a result is quite serious, the party enlists the assistance of Borlon, just in case it gets ugly when they confront Hamish.
After some preparation, they summon Hamish into Borlon’s temple. They subdue the Highlander with hold person spells and tie him up after removing his armor and weapons. They attempt to remove curse and dispel magic, which fail. Needing to recover their spells and try a new tact, the heroes put Hamish in a cell and attempt to exorcise him, but the ritual takes so long Idky, Borlon, and Ishmopah each succumb to fatigue before completing it.
They leave him in the cell overnight. During Yavin’s guard duty, Hamish manages to escape. Yavin casts darkness in the cell and out in the hall to slow him down. Kinsa shows up and helps out with audible glamer to distract him. Artec then shows up and starts brawling with him in the darkness, helped out with Yavin’s telepathic “eyes.” He manages to grab a hold of him, and Kinsa attempts to levitate him, but it fails. Athos shows up and goes to pick the lock on another nearby cell in the hope that they can get him into it.
The combat doesn’t go so well, so Yavin joins in the fight and gives Artec the chance to draw his bow and even out the odds a bit. After a drawn-out fight, they get him unconscious and put him in the opened cell and lock it. They get iron manacles and restrain him.
The three clerics perform the exorcism again, and this time Borlon is able to complete. It is mostly successful, for now. Hamish has been corrupted, and for a moment, Hamish has some clarity and understand what happened to him. But it will slowly come back.
Borlon thinks that Hamish needs an atonement, so he quests them to return to the temple and completely cleanse it. The party, of course, joins him.
