Mission: The heroes (Tyris=Flare, Tandris, Domar, Clanndennagh, Anasta, Moonleaf, Jason and Brand) are to journey to the border of the Negative Material Plane and the Plane of Shadows to recover souls that were stolen by Iuz and Ghaunadaur at the end of the Apocalypse and sold to the Sidhe. These souls are claimed by Persephone, Nephthys, Mictlancihuatl or their allies but are now being used as slave labor.
As the Shadow Knights rise from graves in a village, nine carrion crawlers are attracted to them and attack. The skotos drains blood from one of the crawlers. Brand levitates up and casts Aganazzar’s scorcher and kills one crawler outright. Clandennagh gets paralyzed but ego whips one of the crawlers. Anasta turns into a wolf during the combat. The crawlers get dealt with quickly.
While they’re waiting for Clandennagh’s paralysis to wear off, the heroes start looking around the mausoleums. Domar breaks down the door to one mausoleum and find nine ghouls. They finish them off quickly and move the still-paralyzed Clandennagh into it. They break into another room and find a rack of weapons. They find five skeletons, five zombies, a skeleton with flaming eyes, and three bugbear zombies in the next room. Brand casts Aganazzar’s scorcher at them all. It destroys the normal skeletons and zombies. He gets critically hit by the big skeleton. The next round the scorcher drops all but the big skeleton and one bugbear zombie. Brand has to pull back, and Domar, Anasta, and the skotos move in. Domar decides to drop his sword and attack with his fists. He destroys the skeleton. Anasta gets downed during the fight.
It takes 70 minutes for Clandennagh’s paralysis to wear off. The skotos scouts around outside and finds 13 shadow lions with flickering red eyes. Tandris attempts to read the mind of one of them. The skotos ambles around saying “I smell souls” to get them thinking about them. Tandris is able to telepathically determine that the souls are in nearby fields harvesting food for an evil Sidhe queen. Tyris=Flare uses a symbol of discord to get the lions bickering amongst themselves, allowing them to slip past. Tandris leads the party to the fields where the souls are working.
There are task masters whipping souls there. Tandris and the skotos do their mind reading trick again to find other places with stolen souls. Anasta turns back into a wolf and collects a soul. She starts heading back, and the overlords come after her screaming “Thief! Thief!” The party prepares to engage them. They keep one alive, and Tandris starts questioning him, using post-hypnotic suggestion. He will now guide them to all the places where the souls are. They gather seven souls here.
The places where the souls are:
1. Building wall of tears between land of living and dead
2. Building crypt of Thanatos
3. Soldiers in the army of the dead
4. Cooks in mess hall of death
5. Servants in a powerful necromancer’s keep
6. Servants of the lich in the graveyard
7. Souls supplied by group of drow
8. Souls in temple of Bane
9. Souls in temple of Scarlet Brotherhood
10. Souls in temple Moander
11. Teamsters in a flooded Morganti city
12. Ninja fortress
13. Mind flayers trading souls
They opt to go for souls in another nearby field. As they travel, a battalion of lost orcs starts coming toward them. Tandris reads their mind and finds out they will report them to the lich. So they decide to attack. They finish them off quickly.
They move to the next farming field. They see no overseers. Domar, with the skotos, collects one soul to see what happens. Six overseers pop out and try to get them to work. They attack and clear them quickly. They collect five more (total 12 souls).
They go to the wall building and find a minor death on guard, and there are ten scarecrows there too. And there are five overseers as well. As they are discussing what to do, a scarecrow approaches Brand. Tyris=Flare interposes. The scarecrow attacks her. Half of the scarecrows start approaching. Moonleaf faerie fires all the scarecrows. Brand killed two scarecrows with burning hands.
The rest of the opponents come in, including the death. Brand casts sunfire at the foes, killing three overseers and two scarecrows. Moonleaf faerie fires the rest except the death.
The minor death flies down and attacks Brand. During the melee, Anasta the wolf runs off to collect souls. Tyris=Flare tries to make it over to engage the death. Brand nearly gets paralyzed by a scarecrow and battered by death, but he gets in a critical hit, and Tyris=Flare kills it with the Primacy Blade.
They manage to finish off their foes and collect a total of 19 souls (31 souls in total).
They move on to another field, guarded by two wights. Brand and Tyris=Flare go for the wights, while Anasta, Domar, and Clandennagh gather souls. They gather nine souls (total: 40).
They head to another field, guarded by 13 gargoyles. They move to another field, but have an encounter with six shadow matiffs. The go to the next field, which is guarded by five gargoyles. Tyris=Flare casts power word: kill. It kills three, and the others flee. No souls in this field.
Another field is guarded by three well-dressed humanoid figures. They scan the souls and see at least two or three of their souls there. They are vampires, and as they leap for Brand, the party attacks. Domar’s sternum gets shattered by a vampire. He gets partially fixed by Moonleaf’s cure serious wounds spell. Brand casts lance of disruption at the vampires, also catching the skotos. It drops two vampires. Anasta psychic crushes the remaining vampire, who has just moved into the area where Brand will be following up with a sunfire. It destroys the two downed vampires, and badly damages the last one. Tyris=Flare brings it down and Brand itemizes it for killing later. They find four souls (total: 44).
The get to another field that appears to be unguarded. As Anasta, Clandennagh, and the skotos check the field for souls, a shadow demon tries to sneak up on the rest of the party. Aganzzar’s scorcher from Brand is ineffective, but Tandris gets it with mind thrust. Tyris=Flare drops a demon stone on the ground to keep it from teleporting away. They kill it. Another shadow demon comes out at this time. It fears the party, catching only Domar. They finish it off and collect three more souls (total: 47).
They go into the deep ethereal and head toward home, waiting for Tyris=Flare’s power to become human again regenerates. After 36 hours, they encounter the ether cyclone, which just delays them (luckily). A number of creatures cross their path, but none choose to attack. After ten days, Tyris=Flare is able to become human again.
They beam in at Port Town nine days after they first left -- 619/10/7 to 619/10/16
