A picture of an actress who I think is a good physical match for Amanda is:
1) What is your character's complete physical description? What is his/her race, age, height, weight, build? Hair color, length and type? Eye and skin tone? Unusual marks or scars? Bearing and usual demeanor? Typical garb (include multiple scenarios, if appropriate)?
Amanda is, in a word, wholesome. She stands 5'6", weighs about 120lbs and is 20 years old. She is athletic looking, with lean muscles and toned abs. Her hair is usually the first thing that people notice. It hangs to her waist in waves of auburn colored curls. Half the time, she wears it loose and flowing, other times, it's held out of her face in a loose, somewhat messy braid. There are always remnants of flowers left in her hair and can often be seen sticking out from her head.
The second thing people notice are her eyes, which are a rich violet in color. Llong lashes frame her eyes perfectly and together with her hair accentuate her fair complexion and her heart shaped face. While she is beautiful, she does not dwell on it and doesn't do anything to enhance her beauty (no make-up, her hair is often tousled as opposed to brushed). Her beauty is not that of sexuality and seduction; it is, rather, that of the girl-next-door….sweet, down-to-earth, and radiant.
When not on an adventure, she can be seen wearing loose skirts and peasant blouses with plain sandals and her hair flowing loose and free. She prefers and usually wears bright colors. Her favorite color is sunflower yellow and often wears a cloak of this color. The wool cloak has a silk lining of a lighter yellow shade. When she befriends someone, she will take a small trinket from a pouch at her waist and gives it as a gift. These "favors" are simple in nature, they all have a small, heart-shaped button sewn onto a swatch of two varied fabrics. The colors are varied. She has a few favors that she has received as gifts from others. Around her neck hangs a black, leather cord and from it hangs a small pink rose-shaped pendant. Her wrist is adorned with a silver charm bracelet with one small charm dangling from it...it appears to be a mug of ale.
As for combat, she is not naive and realizes that there are evils out there, both monsters and people, who either can't or won't change their ways. She will defend herself and the cause of good to defeat these evils, but certainly that is not her first choice. When fighting, she dresses plate mail armor etched with roses and vines and carries an oaken staff. She never bears a shield or wears a helm.
2) What is your character's complete psychological description? What are his/her ethics, religion, philosophy, and deity? What kind of personality and interests does he/she have? Is he/she intense, passionate, prone to violence, insane, crafty, etc?
When dealing with people, she is friendly and warm. Although she has a high social level, she is very down-to-earth without putting on airs. She sees beauty in the world around her and is very much the kind of woman who stops to smell the roses. She practices random acts of kindness often and encourages the same in others.
She does not shy away from taking the lead when the need arises, but prefers a more communal environment where everyone feels needed, heard and appreciated. Amanda is an outgoing woman who always looks at the bright side of life. She believes deeply that love truly can change the world and move mountains. While she has her bad days, she does not dwell on them. She prefers to find the silver lining. Amanda looks at adventuring as a way to embrace the world and help others one person at a time.
Amanda is a very vibrant woman. She tries to live her life with honest emotion and passion. Her view is that life is moving pretty fast and you only have so much time to enjoy it. She does not seek out violence, but is willing to fight for "love and justice", just as her Goddess, Myrrhissa, asks. She has a good sense of humor and loves to laugh, but tries not to make jokes that will hurt another person's feelings or humiliate them in some way. She does, however, love good-natured practical jokes!!
3) What are your characters hobbies? What does your character generally do in his/her leisure time? What does your character do to "unwind"?
Amanda grew up in the theater, as a popular stage actress in Greyhawk, she was used to being in the public eye and to this day enjoys a good dose of singing and dancing. She can also be found playing the flute in her spare time. The melodious sound often relaxes her after a particularly grueling day.
On occasion, Amanda has been known to smoke a little pot. She’s not a pot-head, just appreciates the giggles she gets from the “funny” tobacco.
When she’s “home,” whether it’s Greyhawk, Avalon or Klarr, Amanda enjoys spending time brewing fine ale concoctions. As long as there is sugar and yeast, she can brew ale out of almost anything.
4) Why does your character have the class, weapon proficiencies, skills, and languages that he/she does?
Amanda’s parents raised her to see the world around them and find a way to make it a better place. This led to her becoming a cleric of Myhrissa. Through her faith she is able to help the world, one person at a time…as an Acolyte, the priestesses taught her how to use a staff in order to defend herself. They made it clear that while it is the way of Myhrissa to seek out the good in others, there are some beyond redemption. Evil is something that must be fought against…
She learned to brew from her father. A retired adventurer himself, he opened a successful pub and created Knight’s Ale, a typical stout, that even dwarves have lauded for its robust flavor. The family recipe is one that Amanda would like to use and expand upon when she finally settles down to start her own Inn.
Her acting ability was a gift that has been her since she was child. She found she was passionate for the theater at a very early age…when she snuck away from school one day in order to audition for a play, she found she was a natural. Her parents, at first angry that she would ditch school, quickly saw the joy acting brought to Amanda. They allowed her to pursue her dreams as long as she kept her grades up and remembered to give something back to the community.
Her parents made sure she was aware of what the community had to offer by taking her and her brother, Josh, on excursions in and around the Greyhawk region. Her father, a former scout, would tell elaborate stories about the various sites they visited, which led to her skill in Knowledge of the Greyhawk region.
An early experience involving an arrogant Duke in Greyhawk, led her first adventuring party to be banned from the city. In fact they were seen as outlaws. This group, after escaping the city, then took charge of stopping a Slave Trading Ring…all of which eventually led to them being hunted by assassins, especially Amanda. She learned the skill in disguise from, her then boyfriend, Erik. A skill that will someday also benefit her when she returns again to the stage…
While adventuring, she learned philosophy and the martial art, Mystical Cat from her compatriot, Kan Mu., as a way to be armed to combat evil at all times. She also picked up a skill in playing a musical instrument, the flute.
5) What are your character's favorite things? Colors, smells, foods, drinks, sounds, animals, locations, etc. What are your character's least favorite things?
Amanda’s favorite color is butter yellow; she finds that the soft hue just brightens her mood, even when it’s at its darkest. As for flowers, she finds herself drawn to soft-yellow colored daisies and sunflowers.
Her favorite smell is that of hops and barley…this scent of the basic ingredients of ale reminds her of her family’s brewery. She also enjoys the taste of a good, strong stout…while she does not like to drink to the point of tipsy or drunkenness, she does appreciate a nice ale with her dinner. Her favorite dinner is a simple, hearty meal with bread and soup, salad and dessert…yumm.
Her favorite place is Greyhawk, specifically on the stage at the theater, mid-performance or with her family, helping around the Inn.
She loves all animals, but has befriended a giant weasel named, Akasha.
Her least favorite things are deliberate cruelty towards others and the stench of blood. She loathes orcs, believing them to be beyond redemption from their evil practices…this stems from the fact that she was brutally killed by an orc during a raid of her party’s encampment.
She’s not fond of the color black, the taste of wine, or the flavor of pork.
6) Who are your character's current friends, lovers, allies and associates? What is the nature and intensity of these relationships?
Amanda’s closest friends are the adventuring companions she’s known for years. First, there is Kephalonia…while their ethics don’t always seem to blend well, Amanda has a deep affection for the witch of Hecate. She would go to the ends of the earth to protect and defend her friend. Erik is another dear friend. While they were once lovers, they have both moved beyond that immature love. For a while, she had harbored lasting feelings for him, but his turn toward becoming a witch of Hecate, made her realize that his faith and hers would be quite insurmountable. She fondly remembers their time together and loves him as a dear friend, but knows in her heart that he is not her true love. Milos is a trusted friend whom Amanda misses terribly. While she has no romantic feelings for the ½ elf, she loves and respects him.
She has many acquaintances: KanMu, the martial artist who trained her. While they don’t share the same ethical point of view, she does understand his way of thinking and appreciates his friendship. Thyme, a druidess of Ki, who helped her overcome her shyness about sex and taught her the ways of seducing a man. Adama, a hot-headed fighter for whom Amanda holds a bit of affection; she believes that it is loneliness and fear of rejection that causes Adama to be so off-putting and abrasive. Flora, an interesting mage, who is a bit “touched” in the head, but charming nonetheless.
Allies include: Phillippe, the annoying were-fox; while she is attracted to him on one level (he’s dangerous, seductive, etc…), there is no romantic interest from her at all. She does not trust him enough to consider him a friend as she cannot get over the fact that he is a lycanthrope. She fears that one day he will do something that will cause the Knights of the Wild March to have to hunt him down and hurt him.
7) Who and what are your character's enemies and foes? Are these based on personal experience, second-hand encounters, cultural biases, etc?
Amanda has made many enemies. First being Duke Phillip DeChaine. He attacked her, with the intent of raping her, when she was only fifteen. Because of his status in the community, she felt no one would believe her, so she kept quiet. He then spread vicious rumors around Greyhawk, sullying her reputation. As an actress, even as a teenager, she became notorious. While still popular as a stage star, people were often there, to see for themselves, this woman of such sordid tales.
After fleeing Greyhawk as a fugitive, for being party to the death of one of DeChaine’s men, her adventuring band took on the task of ending a slave trading ring. When they finally were able to secure the names of those at the top, they did their best to destroy them all…but a few got away. These traders no doubt have revenge in mind, someday…
Assassins have also been after Amanda…sent from DeChaine, MorDromo, Slippery Ketta, or some other evil doer. The party doesn’t know who is behind the contract on their lives, but one assassin has come closer than any other, a ½ orc named Omega. He has made things quite personal and has nearly succeeded in killing Amanda on more than one occasion. It is assumed that this assassin was sent by Duke DeChaine, since his main target seems to be Amanda.
8) Does your character have any pets, henchbeings or constant companions? Does your character want any?
Amanda has an animal companion named Akasha, a giant weasel. Amanda originally befriended Akasha’s brother, Snuffles, but when Mikhail disappeared, Amanda took over the care of both animals. Upon Mikhail’s return, they gave the animals a choice of who they wanted to be with. Akasha chose Amanda and Snuffles went with Mikhail. She is quite protective of her friend, who in turns protects Amanda.
9) What were your character's previous adventures and experiences? How have they shaped who your character is today?
Amanda’s previous experiences have included being attacked as a teenager by a family friend; becoming an outlaw in Greyhawk for trumped up charges by same “friend”; helping staunch a slave trading ring; and helping defend Furyondy in the face of overwhelming odds from the Kingdom of Iuz.
All in all, these experiences have made her more realistic in what evil truly is. She still believes that everyone should have a chance to redeem themselves for past misdeeds, but she won’t allow herself to be taken advantage of. She will fight against evil and injustice wherever the need presents itself.
While she still chooses to believe in the possibility of goodness in all things, she’s more experienced and willing to put her life on the line to defeat the evil that is without remorse.
10) What are your character's attitudes, habits and vices? Does he/she drink, smoke, do drugs, have sex, gamble, steal, etc?
She has tendency to play “Angel’s Advocate.” Unlike the devil’s advocate role, instead of poking holes in an argument or pointing out weaknesses or negative aspects, she goes out of her way to find the positives of an idea or theory. She tries to find the good in all things to bring happiness even out of the bleakest moments. For some, this can be annoying…to others a ray of light…
She has been known to smoke pot and have a drink or two. Neither of which is done in excess, but simply for relaxation and pleasure in a “party” atmosphere. She’s a social indulger.
As far as sex goes, she’s not a prude, exactly. She is not a virgin and does not think that sex is something that needs to wait until marriage. She believes that sex is a natural part of any relationship as a physical expression of feelings for one another. For her, sex doesn’t mean life-long commitment, but it’s certainly not something she does for “sport.” For her, it’s a sign that she has deeper feelings for someone that needs to be explored. So far, she has only had sex with one person, Erik. Despite that relationship not working out, it did liberate her.
11) What are your character's fears, phobias and issues? Do you have unresolved childhood traumas?
Amanda is afraid of orcs. When orcs stormed their camp in the middle of the night, she stood up and was killed by an orc who slashed her throat. The memory still haunts her and this fear has manifested itself as an irrational hatred of all orcs. She believes them to be without redeemable qualities and as purely evil. Still, she’s not “bloodthirsty” about killing them, but certainly has no compunction in striking to kill when confronted by an orc in battle.
Besides this, Amanda was a well adjusted child. Even through the rumors that swarmed about her in Greyhawk, it really didn’t affect her all that much because she knew the truth as did those who loved her. There were times, of course, that something particularly hurtful was said, but she found that responding to such things only made it worse, so she practiced hiding whether something was hurtful or not, and as she got older realized that such things were said out of ignorance….
12) Where does your character call home? Why? Have there been previous "homes"? Is your character a wanderer?
For Amanda, “home” is the Knight’s Tale Inn in Greyhawk, surrounded by family. There, she can simply be herself--at times witty and charming, at others dopey and naïve—but regardless, her family’s love and acceptance are constants.
Due to circumstances, however, Amanda has become a bit of a wanderer. With assassins lurking after the party, they have attempted to settle in a few places…Avalon, a town they hoped to start a few days from Klarr on the Wild Coast. Then there is Klarr. Being able to move in and settle, temporarily, in the rustic town was nice…the close knit community was something Amanda could appreciate.
In the end, she sees that “home” can be anywhere your heart lies…a place open to friends and family alike.
1) What is your character's complete physical description? What is his/her race, age, height, weight, build? Hair color, length and type? Eye and skin tone? Unusual marks or scars? Bearing and usual demeanor? Typical garb (include multiple scenarios, if appropriate)?
