The heroes (Idky, Torr with Zayüß, Yavin, Ichi, and Athos) itemize Athos as he's basically comatose after reading the book found in the sarcophagus. The heroes then empty out the boats of rotten grave goods in order to use one of them to go up the River Hidden into the mountain. Before leaving, they move their captives into the cavern, in case their enemies collapse the tomb with siege weapons. Ichi shatters one of the clay boats so no one can use it to follow them. Torr then strap the other clay boat to Zayüß so the stallion can airwalk and pull it upstream with the rest of the party in the boat.
The river widens and deepens, but they’re able to stay near the middle of it due to the way they’re traveling. Along the way, Idky and Arthur feel like they’re being watched, but this fades after Torr uses his sword’s dispel power.
After a half hour, the river ends in a pool. No exit. Carved in the rock walls are giant faces: ogre, oni, dragon, eagle, leopard. They all have glowing yellow eyese with giant gaping mouths filled with iridescent mist.
About this time, six creatures leap from the water to attack. They are emaciated, turtle-like creatures with large fangs. During the attack, Ichi senses a giant gar circling their boat. After half of them die, two bail. Yavin makes mental contact with one of the fleeing ones to try to get some information from him. Torr unwisely dives in after it. Another kappa swims around to engage him. Torr kills him with a single swing, even with underwater fighting penalties.
Yavin gets the following information from “Donatello”: The mouths are magical gates that lead to a maze, a mermaid grove, a waterfall, a marsh, and a city
Donatello is reluctant to provide any more info without a reward, so Torr hops on Zayüß to pursue the chaotic evil monster. It surrenders to Yavin telepathically but it knows not to enter the ogre because a friend never returned. Donatello actually knows that none of them are safe, actually. It doesn’t really know which ones go to where, though. They seem to be prisons of some sort.
Torr ends up chasing the kappa off. After some deliberation, the heroes decide to nap Arthur so he’s at full spells and this also gives Yavin a chance to regain his mental strength a little. Then they head through the leopard’s mouth. The mouth animates as they approach and asks “Who seeks entrance to Panchengjuduohah, the Sunken City of Many Doors?” Torr introduces them all in turn. It answers “Find the four keys to pass.”
They next go to the eagle. It doesn’t ask anything, so they enter, passing through a sheet of thick, black fog. They are in a marsh. They hear a buzzing noise ahead and see shadows moving through the dim light. Five giant dragonflies with a man-sized mosquito are heading toward them. Ichi yells out “We came for the key!” The mosquito (surprisingly) answers back: “You will not get the shard.” They all fly in to attack.
During the battle, the mosquito latches onto Idky and tries to fly away with him, but he resisted with airwalking . Ichi ends up killing it and notices that an evil spirit left its body and went down. They finish off the dragonflies quickly and continue on. Yavin notices a rent in the air above. He and Ichi go on the broom to investigate. It looks like a cut in the fabric of the sky. Ichi enters and finds an extradimensional pocket with 6 mummified Dragon Claw bodies and some treasure:
27 gp
27 sp
32 cp
21 pp
Pale lavender spindle
Shard of mirrored glass
They head back through the portal and head to the dragon gate. They hear rushing water in the distance. There are a number of cascades. A gong is by one with a cave nearby. Two glowing spheres 15’ in diameter are by the cave. They head to the cave. Yavin casts find traps and finds none, so they enter. A voice says “For service, please strike gong” three times, in a different one each time. In the back of the chamber is a statue of an eagle-headed dwarf. Ichi strikes the gong. The statue bows and comes forward. It says “All right, what do you need hauled?” They hand it a pouch full of rocks as a test. It demands 200 chi’en. They insist they don’t have it, so it keeps lowering the price to 10 chi’en. They give him 10 gp. It eats the gold, hooks the pouch to its belt, climbs to the top of all the cataracts and places the pouch at the top. They all go up to the top and find a giant pond full of carp. On an island in the middle, they spy a glinting object. Ichi flies over to the island and see it’s a shard of mirrored glass. He goes to get it and heads back. They have the second key.
They party decides to camp out on the island. Torr asks the party how they link their giant carp cooked...
Eeps: 19464 each (except Arthur and Athos)
The next morning, Idky heals Athos of his insanity and casts atonement to remove his level block. He must agree to accompany them through at least one more world along their journey in order to atone.
THE DM IS GOING TO BE MEAN AND RULE THAT ATHOS MAY *NOT* LEVEL OR EVEN EARN THE EEPS HE WAS DUE BECAUSE OF THE BOOK. His mind was wiped...8-(
