The heroes (Maedhros, Daj, Helga, Saanau, Cliffy, Moonlight, Jyolli, Black Robe and Jamal) continue up the icy slope, spying ten scorpion men around the cave mouth ahead. The party splits up as they move at different speeds up the steep, knee-deep, snow-covered mountainside.
Daj sprints up the mountainside with a protection from normal missiles and reaches the monsters in a few rounds. She gets magic missiled for her effort, but casts slow, catching one.
One of the scorpion men is a cleric and it holds Saanau! In return, the monsters get a frostball from Maedhros, a sundazzle from Moonlight, while Daj lightning bolts a line of them. The response is a fireball from one of the scorpion men and continued arrow fire from some with direct melee from others.
Cliffy casts improved magic missile while Maedhros removes paralysis on Saanau. Black Robe casts firebows and starts shooting. Suddenly, a dinosaur, a raptor identical to the kind that tore off Mikhail's arm, leaps down and attacks one of the blinded scorpionmen. It misses and lands in the snow very gracefully nonetheless.
A confusion from one of the scorpionmen catches Saanau, the dinosaur (archaeopteryx) and Daj. The pincher of a scorpion man catches and breaks Saanau's hip. About the same time, a minor (unlucky) snowquake sends Cliffy, Jamal, and Daj a little way down the hillside while Helga gets blinded by a light spell. A stinking cloud catches Cliffy and forces Maedhros and Saanau to fall back.
The heroes continue to fight the scorpion men, downing one and wounding several others. Another stinking cloud catches Jamal and Daj. Saanau wanders away confused while Daj rushes to attack Jamal. Helga gets badly hit critically and drops to the snow. The raptor runs to attack Cliffy, who just recovered from nausea.
After killing all the scorpion men, the heroes regroup to heal, neutralize poison, etc. After some communication, the raptor transforms into a young man who turns out is known to Black Robe; he is the son of the shaman's dear friend, Kalavor. Willish had been lost for nearly four years on Torsh and had resorted to staying largely in his reptilian forms in order to survive.
The heroes see that the gates to the cave are closing, so they collect Saanau and Helga and enter. Inside, the group encounters a three-way fork and choose to take the path straight ahead. The come upon magical darkness and toss a light stone which reveals a bunch of trolls, ogres, skeletons, zombies, and a few people...!
Helga charges, backed up by Jamal, with a Maedhros turning all the undead to dust. That's when the fireball hits! Moonlight gets charmed by the woman, so he casts a wall of fire to protect her from his allies and catches two ogres in the spell. Maedhros lobs a frostball at the people at the back, behind the wall of fire. Willish, meanwhile, offers to "heal" Moonlight and asks him to accept a "healing" (charm person) spell...!
That's when things get crazy. Helga (still enlarged) and Jamal are battling the trolls stuck at the front of the party. The rest of the non-human enemies are down and/or roasting, but effectively both sides are stoppered up. Another fireball (shot blindly) from the same bad guy completely misses, impacting an allied troll in the back of the head, and blasts back at the caster and his cohorts. A flame strike catches Helga, Black Robe, and Jamal but does minimal damage. Daj manages to jump totally clear.
The half-dryad rolls forward and takes on Helga's troll, allowing Jamal, Helga, and Black Robe run through the wall of fire. As Moonlight rushes up to protect his “mistress,” Willish acts like he needs healing badly, and calls him back. Moonlight hesitates to look at the newcomer's wounds.
The woman turns into an ogre magi and blasts the heroes' front line with a cone of cold. Daj sees this (the cone causes the wall of fire to momentarily waver) and she leaps through the blaze, killing the monster with two swipes of her scimitars. The charm on Moonlight breaks, but Willish has a hard time believing it and holds onto the druid until he agrees to kiss him.
The acrobat attempts to flee, after the rest of his cohorts go down, but Helga knocks him back. Black Robe catches him with a hold person, and Helga tries to hew off his head. The man goes down, but his head remains attached...

The party all appears on a large 8x8 grid (a chess board). The pawns are ogres. The Bishops are Cyclops. The Knights are ettins. The Rooks are fire giants in armor. The Queens are cloud giantess and the ENEMY King is a teenage hill giant. The party, meanwhile, are all pawns, except Willish, who is the party's King...!
The group then plays chess with Willish having to call out the moves before the party's pieces will act. Cheating (by the PCs) results in everyone taking damage. After a certain number of legal moves, each side is slowly healed. Through a series of legal moves and a few cheats, they manage to win the game.
