Hu Hsen recommends going to Pe Nok. The priest at that monastery might be able to help regenerate Torr’s leg. If not Pe Nok, there is a shrine at Yensa, beyond Hsin-to, near lake Goru.
The heroes (Idky, Torr with Zayüß, Yavin, Ichi, Arthur, and Quendi) opt to go to Pe Nok and so they head south to the fishing village. Arriving there a day and a half later (thanks to Idky’s easy march spell), they note that the fishing fleet is still at sea. The group heads into the village’s lone watering hole where they relax briefly, but they spot a Dragon Claw as they are having drinks. The heroes leave to go take care of him only to find that a crowd has formed outside made up of a bunch of Dragon Claws. Without so much as issuing a challenge, the horde rushes the party.
As they rush in, Yavin catches a bunch with a faerie fire, Quendi mass sleeps five, Arthur magic missiles, and Idky casts prayer. Torr, Ichi, and Zayüß engage in melee. More Dragon Claws show up after the first round. Quendi lightning bolts from her staff, killing four outright. As has happened before, they are sharing a centralized health pool, and more start falling as they kill off others.
The newcomers move to attack Quendi. More men show up. Ichi and Arthur start getting hurt pretty badly. Ichi pulls out his darkness stone and tries to help out Arthur. Idky does the same.
Quendi casts body spasm on an opponent, freeing herself to cast Quendi’s Magical Analyzer. She discovers that they all draw off a magical pool of health (a network which is range-based). The higher level monks are able to draw off the health of the lower level ones, but not needlessly. She also finds out that their souls are being claimed when they do die.
Arthur levitates away when he gets freed. Yavin gets disarmed, and so he activates his jump ability and leaps toward Idky’s darkness to safety. He initiates his blur ability and starts fending off monks with his cloak (steelcloth).
Meanwhile, Quendi starts ESPing the spasmed monk’s mind with her ESP amulet, learning all she can about their magical network. The helpless man can’t resist.
Zayüß goes down under an onslaught, but before he can be finished off, Arthur magic missiles the last monk on Zayüß and kills him.
Ichi and Torr start whittling down their opponents. The monks start getting desperate. One of them attempts some strange maneuver on Yavin, but he misses and just dies.
Torr is now clear and brings up Zayüß with a cure light wounds. Ichi and Idky finish off the last tough guy, who dies. He also ends up draining the spasmed guy, who also dies.
They find that one of the men is merely unconscious. His swords are the only ones that didn’t break, so they herb and bandage him and bind him. They wish to question him further.
Quendi explains that there is a leader who dwells in some location that her monk didn’t know.
The villagers are grateful and offer to help get them to the next city so they can book passage on a larger ship.
Yavin is able to telepathically question the unconscious man using a combination of mind read and his native telepathy:
Quendi says that his swords and his scars bear the same magical signature
It is three days to sail to the next port, where they can book passage to Pe Nok. Yavin's out of spells; what does the party want to do with their captive Dragon Claw?

Yavin is able to telepathically question the unconscious man using a combination of mind read and his native telepathy:
- The monks share some memories as well—like a hive mind.
- There is an underground river near the leader.
- There are many, many more dragon claws nearby, and they can sense each other when within range.
- The range is dependent on their level
- They’re not aware of the true demonic nature of the power
- If they don’t choose to become Dragon Claws, they are fought.
- If they are defeated in battle, they must slit their wrists and submit. The blood forms their swords.
- Those who choose to join merely are asked to cut their hands to get the blood for their swords.
- Their goal: slaughter every follower of every other martial arts style, with prejudice against any who cast clerical spells (clerics, shukenja, druids, who are primary spellcasters).
- They can’t be turned.
- It’s very important that they not allow their swords to be broken in battle. When asked why, Yavin gets immediately ejected.
