Week 11—
Hu Hsen asks his students (Idky, Torr, Yavin, Ichi, and Arthur) to meet him on the south coast of the island near a shipwreck. They are to learn instant stand. They are to wade out into the breakers and practice as they gradually back toward the beach.
After 4 hours of practice, two sharks attack Idky and Yavin. Ichi moves to take on Idky’s shark, and Idky moves to push Yavin out of the way, because he doesn’t see the shark coming after him.
Idky gets bitten and dragged off by the shark into the water, as does Yavin. That’s when four other sharks arrive. Ichi continues to attack Idky’s shark. Arthur magic missiles the shark, driving it off. The other sharks also attack Idky and Yavin. The first shark returns after smelling new blood. Yavin starts getting pulled away, even though he had activated his fly power. Arthur magic missiles that shark to help out Yavin. Torr also slugs that shark, and it lets Yavin go. Yavin flies out of the water.
Yavin faerie fires the sharks, helping to negate the party’s penalties against them. Ichi continues to help out Idky, after driving off his shark. He kills two sharks and forces another to let Idky go.
They finally kill off the sharks and pull them out of the water. After some healing, they continue with training for the day.
Arthur, Yavin, Ichi succeed on the first day.
Second day, the following succeed: Torr, Ichi, Arthur, Idky
Day three, halfway through, two sharks attack Arthur. He magic missiles one, while Torr goes after the other. Idky faerie fires them. Shortly after, two more show up. One goes for Torr and the other for Yavin. Arthur magic missiles again.
Ichi attacks Yavin’s shark. One shark took off Torr’s left leg at the knee. Antoher one rakes him across the chest, and he’s bleeding profusely. Torr starts getting pulled out to sea. Idky blinds two sharks with light spells. Unfortunately, they don’t use their eyes to navigate or fight. Ichi stuns a shark and goes after Torr’s shark. They manage to defeat the sharks, but now worry about what to do about Torr’s severed leg. The master says that there is a priest who can help, but they will have to wait until training is completed. The rest of the party continue training that day.
The following succeed: Arthur (completed), Idky, Yavin.
Day 4, Arthur assists Torr. The following succeed this day: Yavin (completed), Ichi (completed)
Day 5, Idky (completed), Torr assisted by Arthur and Ichi
Day 6, Torr fails (hey, it's hard with only one leg, even with no sharks!)
Day 7, Torr finally completes.
Week 12—
They are called to the central clearing. Hu Hsen has new naginatas for them. He will teach them to catch and then break an opponent’s weapon. First, they will practice disarming, using their wooden naginatas. As a final “exam,” they must disarm seven monkeys armed with razor sharp blades. Passing: Idky, Yavin (barely), Torr, Ichi.
Week 13—
They practice weapon break. Then Hu Hsen tells them of an invasion of oni. They can go fight them however they wish, but they must catch at least three times and break once to pass, and then return.
They all go in together. They come upon five oni armed with curved swords (katana). They defeat them. As they are healing up, seven more oni approach and attack. Idky casts aid on Arthur, and Yavin casts aid on himself. The fight doesn’t go well for Idky, who goes down and bleeds. Arthur gets relieved of his opponent and goes to tend to his wounds. They bring him back up and heal each other after defeating the oni. Then seven more show up. Idky and Torr get taken out, but the remaining members finish off the oni and heal up the downed members.
All have learned to disarm, and all but Arthur have learned weapon break.
