1) What is your character's complete physical description? What is his/her race, age, height, weight, build? Hair color, length and type? Eye and skin tone? Unusual marks or scars? Bearing and usual demeanor? Typical garb (include multiple scenarios, if appropriate)?
The first thing most people notice about Kate is her tall, muscular body. At 5’10”, she towers over most people…male or female. While quite agile and athletic, her powerful build often keeps people from approaching. She assumes they stay away because they are fearful of the warrior.
When prepared for combat, Kate wears chain or plate mail, depending on the circumstance. Her chain mail is nothing special, well worn, but affective. Her plate mail, while also well used, still shines as if new…or magical. The most noticeable thing about her, and another reason people tend to keep their distance, is her weapon of choice…a black, wicked looking battle-axe. The axe is never out of her sight, as it was created for her by Angellus.
When not prepared for combat, she can be found wearing comfortable clothing of fine quality. She’s not ostentatious, but believes that you get what you pay for.
For those who choose to look past her strong physique will notice that Kate is an attractive, flaxen-haired woman. She typically wears her hair shoulder length, just long enough to see the slight wave in the thick tresses, which shine from good health. Her bright, hazel eyes and fair skin give her a fresh, youthful look. She has a very generous smile that lights up all of her beautiful features.
2) What is your character's complete psychological description? What are his/her ethics, religion, philosophy, and deity? What kind of personality and interests does he/she have? Is he/she intense, passionate, prone to violence, insane, crafty, etc?
Kate is a warrior. This persona is what people first see when meeting her. She spent many years as an adventurer and even longer working as a caravan guard for Venturas Drake. She is rather intense and feels self-concious about her lack of intellect.
Kate realized at an early age that she lacks mental acuity. What was clear, however, was that she was physically stronger than most boys her age. She worked on honing the skills of a fighter. At her core, she feels a strong sense of protectiveness for those who cannot protect themselves. Throughout her life she has focused on this as a vocation.
Her other vocation is one she learned while working for Venturas. From him she found a passion for trade. She developed an affinity for the craft of merchant. After learning as much as she could from Venturas, she chose to leave his employ…although there were also personal reasons for her departure.
As for her religion, she has been a follower of Angellus since she was a child. She grew up in his faith, and she continues to be a worshipper. However, she is a strong minded woman who does have some problems dealing with the male-dominated religion. For this this reason, when given the opportunity to become a cleric of Angellus, she found she could not reconcile the tenets of cleric-hood with her own independence. She is a woman who expects equal treatment and has a hard time being treated differently simply because she is a woman.
Kate has very few friends, she finds trust difficult to maintain. She tends to guard her emotions for fear of being hurt. She tends to remain aloof which turns people away...but this stems from a deeper fear of rejection. Easier to reject them so she doesn't feel the hurt.
When someone does get to know Kate personally, they realize that she is a deeply compassionate woman whose emotions run deep. They also learn that she has a healthy sense of humor, while not particularly witty herself, she appreciates the humor of others.
3) What are your characters hobbies? What does your character generally do in his/her leisure time? What does your character do to "unwind"?
Kate has little time for hobbies, per se. Her first “career” as adventurer/protector can have her traveling at any time. In between, she has built up her own merchant company, Ashbrooke Trading Co. Using all she’s learned from her many years working for Venturas, she has made this merchant company her focus when not adventuring.
To unwind, Kate can be found on her flying carpet sailing in the serenity and solitude of the clouds.
4) Why does your character have the class, weapon proficiencies, skills, and languages that he/she does?
Kate has the chosen class and proficiencies she has for the following reasons…
Battle-axe was her Uncle Colin’s weapon of choice. As a child, when her family would visit, her uncle would gather all the kids together and teach them the finer points of the axe. It grew into one of her favorite activities and both she and her cousin, Ian, became experts with the weapon.
Her skills in appraising, negotiation and as a merchant came from her many years working in the merchant company of Venturas Drake. The art of business, she discovered, was one that could be learned. While she was never a brilliant student, one didn’t have to be a genius to work out a trade route that benefited everyone. In fact, she found that her stature aided her in the business world…men treated her as an equal, not as a “simpering female.”
5) What are your character's favorite things? Colors, smells, foods, drinks, sounds, animals, locations, etc. What are your character's least favorite things?
Kate is one of those people who doesn’t have just one favorite anything…except weapon! For the most part, she is quite adaptable. If really pressed for a favorite color, she would say yellow, but the next time she was asked it might be blue. This isn’t to imply that she can’t make up her mind, but merely that the circumstances of the moment dictate her response; for instance, if she’d just seen a tremendous sunset, the golden-orange hues may have such an affect that for a while that would be her “favorite” but then, she may see the velvety blue depths of the Nyr Dyv as seen from the vantage point of her flying carpet, which could then become her most “favorite.” In the end, she has experienced so many enchanting things in her life, to narrow down to one or two favorites would be a disservice to all those things she has seen or has yet to try, do or see.
In fact, she is more than willing to try new things at every turn…new foods, new scents, new travel destinations…she’s not “fearless,” but she does believe that one must experience the world as much as possible to be fully a part of it.
As for least favorite things…she’s not a fan of fish, she really can’t stand the smelly things. That being said, if she is invited to dinner and the host provides a lavish fish dinner, she will eat it with no complaint. She spent many years with the essence of the God of Hunger within her which left her with an ability to eat just about anything put in front of her. She finds there will always be people who will always see her as “Saint Kate, the Hungry,” and she does not want to disappoint them or disrespect their gifts given in the spirit of faith.
6) Who are your character's current friends, lovers, allies and associates? What is the nature and intensity of these relationships?
Kate has very few friends, but for those she has, she would go to the ends of Oerth. Her closest friend for many years was Emma, cleric of Pyhrrea. They grew up together in the Great Kingdom. When Emma completed her time studying as a cleric, they became adventuring compatriots as well. They traveled together for quite a few years, when during an adventure Emma was killed by Mind Flayer. The party she was with, which included Kalavor Talgris and Zarabell Finelock, was able to get Emma reincarnated. The new Emma forgot most of her old life, along with a lot of her ability casting cleric spells. She moved to Portown with Kate and lived there for a while, but Emma had no sense of connection to neither the region nor her childhood friend, Kate. One morning Kate woke up and found a letter under her door…Emma had decided to move on and create a life elsewhere.
Currently, Chastity Wu, is her closest friend. A powerful mage and fellow worshipper of Angellus, Kate is somewhat intimidated by Chastity’s powerful mind, she does not sense that Chastity thinks less of her for not being as smart. Kalavor Talgris, another friend, is another person who Kate would move Oerth to help. She’s gone so far as to travel to Eon in order to help bring an end to the giant raids on his home world.
Kate has a fondess for Garlok and Robyndella Drake, she ran across the two children when she was on her first adventure. Incurring the wrath of Moorak, their powerful father...he believed she had encouraged the youngsters to join the adventuring party. He never bothered to hear her side, instead choosing to believe the version he'd created in head.
Another associate from Portown is Thumper, the small white rabbit that lived in back of Drake Manor for many years. After many years, she learned of his secret abilities...
Currently Kate resides in Angel’s Rock, home of Calaeia Drake. Calaeia and Kate are not exactly close friends, although Kate does admire and respect the Cavalier very much. Her cousin Ian, who is dating Calaeia, is the other person she spends time with regularly, the two of them enjoy spending time reminiscing about their childhood…it was Ian’s father who taught them both to use the battle-axe. Venturas Drake is someone for whom Kate feels fondness. He was her “mentor” or sorts and for many years worked for him. Mandar Drake is another for whom she feels great fondness, like that of a sister toward a brother…she relates well to him and enjoyed their time together working for Venturas.
As for lovers, Kate has had several lovers in her life. One notable lover was Icthius, cleric of Hades, while they were traveling in the underdark. Kate was at a lonely point in her life and truly turned to the cleric as a means of combating her loneliness. She quickly realized that Icky was not the type of person she wanted for a long term relationship and has had no further contact with him since their brief affair.
The reason she turned to him in the first place was because over the years she had found herself attracted to Venturas Drake, only to have her feelings go unreturned. In part, Venturas did not view her as an intellectual equal; another contributing factor was her size, she strikes a formidable figure and most men can’t help but feel intimidated since she is usually stronger than most. It finally became clear to her that she stayed so long in portown in hopes Venturas would return her feelings. She eventually lost hope for this, especially when he began an affair with the seductive cleric of We Jas, Sage. With a sad heart she left Portown and her position working for Venturas…while his relationship w/ Sage didn’t last, it was clear that Kate could never be the kind of woman Venturas wanted.
Since then, she has been attracted to several men, one of whom is her friend Kalavor, but she has never found a man who could or would overlook her physical strength…despite her beautiful face and kind heart. For the most part she is rather lonely, but is no longer willing to settle for short term sexual relationships…and there will always be a part of heart broken by her unrequited feelings for Venturas.
7) Who and what are your character's enemies and foes? Are these based on personal experience, second-hand encounters, cultural biases, etc?
Kate’s foes are typically the forces of evil. She killed the demon-lord Baphomet, aided in the destruction of Lloth’s corporeal essence on Oerth, slew the evil god-like creature that escaped the prison beneath Greyhawk, as well as the Primal God Sauron (God of Hunger). She’s therefore made herself the enemy of demons and drow specifically.
While she is not a targeted foe of giants, she is more than willing to join in killing evil beings of all shapes and sizes…
As a worshipper of Angellus, she also doesn’t deal too well with witches, and for years has had an antagonistic relationship with Moorak Drake, champion of Bahamut & Protector of Witches. She has worked with him on several occasions to defeat the forces of evil, even going as far as another world, Maldev. In fact, she’s traveled to Eon, Diablo, Maldev, and Abydos to defeat evil forces.
