In the morning, Yavin flies up into orbit on the broom and casts dimensional folding to bring Torr into orbit with him and then re-enters with him to re-join the party. In the morning, the entire gang (Idky, Torr w/Zayüß, Yavin, Ichi with JIP, and Arthur) is back together, minus Lowdog, of course...
The shukenja that helped Torr is named Ko Ho San while the Master of Climbing Star name Lei Kho.
Asking Lei Kho about the Dragon Claws, he gives them a bit more of what he knows of them. They’ve only been here for three or four weeks. He thinks they might be coming from the Dragon Spine Mountains, but he knows of no monasteries there.
Arthur, along with Zayüß and Torr, go track the Dragon Claws out of town. They find the Dragon Claw champion with the broken hip at the side of the road with his throat slit and his swords broken around him. Torr takes a finger and return to town.
The heroes head down to the docks to see if they can find someone to take them to the island. A little boy tries to pick Torr’s pocket. The paladin notices and the party ends up pressing the child into service to find the captain of a ship. Meanwhile, a dock working courtesan (aka cheap ho) approaches the heroes and hits on Torr. The paladin isn't interested, but Yavin wanders off for some fun.
Finally reaching the ship, the heroes discover the captian speaks Koiné, so Arthur converses with him. The Westerner is leery of taking the heroes to the “Isle of Monsters.” He agrees to take them to five miles off the shore and give them a dinghy so they can take the horse with them. Cost is 1032gp and a strength spell from Arthur.
The ship won’t leave for two days (at night), so the heroes hang out in town and at the monastery of the Climbing Star.
The next morning, six Dragon Claw monks show up at the monastery to challenge Ichi to “put him into his place.” Ichi accepts, and the battle is joined. The battle lasts less than a minute, and Ichi kills their champion with an eagle’s claw. As Idky and Ichi attempt to check on the fallen man, the other monks move to attack Ichi and Torr to prevent them from “claiming the body.”
During the battle, Ichi does quite well, but Torr (in his BVDs) is taking a beating. Yavin and Arthur help out with mind thrust and magic missiles. Ichi takes off one guy’s head—with his fist! Idky discovers the first guy that Ichi fought is still salvageable. Ichi knocks out his last guy. They notice that as each man who fell in battle, their swords broke.
The healers start bandaging the fallen monks. Yavin heals them to stable comas, and they bring them inside. The unconscious one comes conscious. His eyes flash red, he says “We will remember you!”, and then all of them die. Their magical dweomer then fades.
Yavin goes back into orbit with the finger of the toughest monk to cast speak with dead. He calls on the man’s spirit, but it’s been drawn away. His life force has been fed on by some soul-eating entity. A demonic force has fed on his soul. While up there, Yavin also communes with Celestian and discovers that they are definitely involved with some demonic power from the Abyss.
On re-entry, Yavin accesses his prophecy ability and discovers that they are now part of something bigger. Events are moving along now that Lowdog has left.
The heroes provision themselves and leave the next night. They arrive at the island on the dinghy five days later. Yavin contacts the shukenja before they land, and he tells them to find the center of the island and find its true ruler. It’s a small beautiful tropical island. At the middle of the island is a massive, ancient tree.
Idky's true seeing reveals that they are surrounded by spirits, waiting. A female spirit comes up to him and reaches out to him. She touches him on the head, and he falls unconscious. Yavin attempts to contact him telepathically and also falls asleep.
Meanwhile, Idky is under the light of the full moon. She relays a message: And old monk, Hu Hsen, asked her to relay this message to one who had seen the Dragon Claws. His message: You are invited to serve as his student. He is teaching his style of thought in the interests of facing the Dragon Claw. Idky and Yavin awake as soon as Huruga delivers her message.
Yavin telepathically contacts the shukenja, Ko Ho San, and the priest tells him that the monk is a holy pilgrim who lived a couple hundred years ago. He is known to walk the coast of the mainland.
The party rows to the mainland and walk the coast. After two days, they get shot at from the jungle, about 70 feet to their left. They all run toward the jungle. A bright red oni with three eyes steps out and casts a spell to turn into an umber hulk. Charging out of the jungle are 28 orcs.
Ichi drives straight for the oni-umber hulk. Torr and Zayüß get swarmed, as do Idky and Ichi. Idky protects himself with his continual darkness necklace. Yavin flies and draws arrow fire, trusting to his amulet to protect him. Arthur starts magic missiling orcs. Torr and Zayüß mow down orcs. Ichi downs the oni, calling for Yavin to finish it off with the fiery battleaxe.
Things start looking bad for Arthur. He casts fly on himself and zooms to safety to set up to attack from a distance. After finishing off the oni, Yavin flies up and starts throwing the battleaxe at orcs. The remaining orcs thin out quickly.
When only nine are left, morale breaks. They all run. The party chases them down so only one gets away. One orc that begs for forgiveness is subdued.
Oni’s name is Seth the Cowardly. Very little treasure:
275 sp
165 gp
Eeps: 1722 each
Idky & Yavin: bonus 500 for dreams
