The heroes (Idky, Torr w/Zayüß, Lowdog with Tensay, Woxin, Tomkin, and Xiang, Yavin, Ichi with JIP, and Arthur) wake up and manage to charm the fighter, Erekose. They find out that his master, Kwong, sent him to destroy. Kwong is a VERY powerful wizard—he can cast cloud trapeze (an 8th level spell). In addition, the heroes discover the nature of Erekose's magic items.
Lowdog decides to draw a card from Erekose's special deck of many things. The card he draws bestows a curse (permanent -1 on all saving throws). He sees seven swords around him and receives a vision of the Seven Swords (champions) of Istus and their story. He also has been marked by the Gods of the Dead and has to serve them. He will be fated to at least partially fail at all his endeavors until this time.
In an attempt to undo the damage, Lowdog draws another card. He is now cursed to always overdo whatever he is involved in.
After some discussion, Yavin takes the fighter and the katana into orbit to dispose of them: the fighter gets put into softwood cocoon and pushed to the Lagrange Point between Terrax and its moon while the katana gets pushed to a low, quickly-decaying solar orbit.
Traveling on toward the shukenja, the heroes encounter a group of men with bows who seem to want them to stop. The commander is wearing samurai-esque clothing. Arthur attempts to communicate in Koiné. One of the men comes forward, who speaks Koiné, and demands to know why they are there. The tells them they need to pay a bunch of money because they have no travel papers and are harboring ‘dangerous animals.’ They accept their valuables as payment and receive a piece of paper. Idky casts comprehend languages to read it. It’s basically a note inviting the reader to take advantage of the party.
Yavin returns, and the group continues on to the next town, passing poor peasants in the rice paddies. The town has wooden walls, and the guards demand their papers. The guards take the party to the magistrate, where Arthur communicates via tongues. After paying an exorbitant fee, the heroes get legitimate traveling papers.
As they leave, JIP hops off Ichi’s back, but Ichi grabs him. JIP manages to leave a turd on the magistrate’s seat as they leave. The party heads out very quickly!
They travel an extra long time before bedding down for the night. A group of men attack them as they sleep. After seeing a bunch of sling stones bounce off Yavin, they back off, but not before everyone wakes up and Yavin casts heat metal at the men. They run off when Lowdog menaces them, dropping their hot swords.
Traveling on the next day, they come across a group of robed pilgrims, along with four other men who look like Ichi. These men are covered with bruises, and their clothing is bloodied. Idky casts tongues to talk to the four men. Yavin links Idky and Ichi to facilitate the communication. They find out a rival monastic school has attacked their monastery and taken it over. Ichi is interested in helping them, but there is concern about deviating too much farther from their quest. They decide to help them out after meeting with the shukenja.
Day 5: They encounter some imperial guards and show them their papers. They pass with no incident.
Day 6: Encounter another group of five pilgrims. As they pass, they turn into oni and attack.
An oni attempts to charm Ichi but his orange cube protects him. Another casts sleep, catching JIP and Tensay. Two others blast the party with cones of cold. Yavin goes down. Ichi attacks the ones on Idky, freeing him up to cast heal on Yavin, bringing him back up with a healand saves the cleric of Celestian's life. Lowdog and Torr take on two more. Lowdog kills one. Xiang changes shape. An oni casts cone of cold on Torr, but his sword absorbs it.
Yavin mind thrusts Xiang’s opponent. The werebear bear hugs his oni. That’s when Tomkin flies down, picks up a downed oni and starts gnawing off its head. They quickly finish off the rest of the oni (including a magic missile from Arthur), and Yavin finishes them off with the fiery battleaxe.
