The heroes (Torr with Zayüß, Idky, Lowdog with Woxin and Tensay as well as Xiang, Yavin, and Ichi with JIP [Jumps In Puddles]) continue to contemplate what to do about the orcs and the villagers
Their plan:
• Quest the orcs to save 5 villagers each from a threat that they didn’t manufacture themselves.
• Order the orcs to clean the castle and post watches of the castle
• The giant eagle maintains an aerial watch
The party then plays around with the magical items:
• Gloves of the fox
• The noh mask allows you to disguise your face to look like someone else
• Kimono seems to make one seem more ‘interesting’
• Ninja suit of the chameleon
• Amulet of protection from missiles
• Tabi boots allow you to move silently
They go into the village to get herbs from the herbalist.
The next day, they hear a booming voice challenge them to a battle. Going outside, they find a pair of 8-foot tall oni with three eyes. Torr accepts the challenge, but insists that he fight with Zayüß. Idky slips an aid spell on Torr without the oni noticing.
Lowdog casts detect invisibility and notices the oni they drove off observing invisibly from a distance. Torr nearly kills one, but the monster shoots off into the sky at amazing speed before the paladin can finish it. Torr nearly kills the other, but it too uses its power of cloud trapeze to escape at blinding speeds... At this cue, the invisible oni also shoots away. The combat lasted just 20 seconds...
The heroes search the castle, finding an alchemical lab and armory.
Idky questions the locals about the oni and finds out that the most powerful are the horse-headed oni. They get maps of the area and are able to plan out their trip to the wizard’s mausoleum where the portal is. Lowdog dreams about the dungeon there. The first step is to pass the test of the three elements. Thousands have tried and failed. He sees a rounded pyramid with 4 entrances. Many evil spirits. Many get shredded. No reports of people getting past first doorway. Lots of blood in there. Thousands of spirits of people who’ve died in the dungeon.
After six days of preparation, they head out to their destination.
Along the way, they receive a warning from the giant eagle that a huge army of orcs is waiting in ambush ahead. After some preparation (but no prayer spells!), the heroes move on, coming into a wall of arrows from the orcs. As the party attacks, Xiang reveals his true nature and turns into his werebear form!
Lowdog notices that the orcs are being led by four humans, two of whom are trying not to be obvious. Those two are a mirror-imaged mage and a priest.
The next wave are of crossbow bolts with crystal heads that break and infect the wound with acid. Torr takes on one of the fighters. Ichi lands by the priest, Yavin starts shooting at the mage, Lowdog starts taking on orcs, and Idky shoots the other fighter with a bullet of ghostly slaying, necrofying his right arm, stunning him.
Yavin takes all the arrow fire, but his amulet protects him. However, he still takes a small amount of damage from the acid. Torr gets hit by his fighter and loses a level! All of a sudden, a dragon flies down at Yavin. Torr reveals that it’s not real, because his sword isn’t reacting.
Zayüß escapes into Idky’s globe of darkness, and Tensay also bolts. Torr brings his fighter near death while Tensay collapses from acid damage. Lowdog leaps up to help out with Torr’s opponent, bringing him even closer to death. Idky and Yavin start on the mage, taking out all of his mirror images.
Torr loses another level to the level-draining fighter.
After his failed attempt to hold Torr and the monk, the priest that Ichi is facing runs away, allowing orcs to swarm the monk. The dragon attacks Lowdog. Idky stuns the priest with another bullet of ghostly slaying and Xiang attacks the dragon’s tail. Torr finishes off the fighter, but not before he strikes Lowdog with his katana, draining the totemic warrior of a level.
With all their leaders down but the mage, the orcs’ morale breaks. The mage bolts as well.
Yavin suggests a daring plan to help the paladin and totemic warrior. Although confined to the surface of a world, the cleric of Celestian lacks his powerful spells, in the caress of wildspace, his magical powers return. Using a lighten load on the three of them and with Lowdog initiating his power to levitate, the three take off on Ichi's broom, heading straight up...!
This leaves Ichi and Idky behind with Zayüß, Tensay, Woxin, Tomkin, and Xiang amid the bodies...
After about ten minutes on the broom, the air gets thin and Yavin casts a create air spell. Meanwhile, Torr uses his magical gem to quit breathing. The cleric repeats his spell again when the air gets hard to breathe. Since the party hasn't gained enough altitude, from this point on, Yavin uses his create air spells sparingly, waiting until the air approaches the level of toxin before casting his spell again. It takes six of Yavin's spells before the heroes finally reach the edge of the atmosphere some five hours later, above where meteors burn up and amid the range of the aurora borealis.
Here, Yavin is able to access the powers of the Far Traveler. He restores one level to each warrior, leaving Torr one level down. He also creates a number of continual starlight and continual darkness stones as well as renewing his own fly spell. As the air goes bad, the cleric asks Lowdog to accept a spell...
