So a few months back we officially made the complete switch over to Second Edition Dungeons and Dragons. We moved to the 2nd Edition XP tables (Druids and such excluded) and the 2E spell descriptions with some sort of modified wonky range thing that nurfed fireball (But thats a discusion for another time).
However, there has been one thing that has been unclear from my perspective about this, and that is the monsters. Before the switch, from an outsiders perspective (outside of the DM's mind that is) it seemed as though Uncle David was randomly flip-flopping back and forth between using the 1st Editon monster wright ups, and the 2E Monstrous Manual. The problem is that for us non-enlightened people (aka. everyone but Uncle David), it is unclear when creating PCs, summoning monsters, and knowing when to run and when to fight.
I'm not talking about knowing the exact HD and AC of all the monsters and their powers, I just want to be able to know weather the upcoming battle will be difficult and when it will be impossible. For instance, in 1st edition, the Balor is a formidable opponent, weighing in at 8+8 HD, AC -2, and a whip that it can use instead of its sword. This is very different from the 2E Balor, who has 13HD, AC -8, and can attack with both its whip and its sword in one round. If the 2nd edition version had come round the corner when we had finished the Kary, Moonlight wouldn't have stuck around for a second more.
I guess what I'm asking for is a bit of clarification as to what rules you use when you decide to use the 2E monstrous manual or the 1E write up.

Howdy Aaron, GREAT question -- yes, I'm pretty much always now using the 2nd Edition rules for monsters. So about 98% of the time, the Monstrous Manual wins. The only exceptions I can think of are: * Dragons -- which are still based on 2E but with heavy mods * Demons & Devils and other extra-planars -- mostly cuz I haven't had a chance to read up on 'em in the new books, but EXPECT them to also start being updated. I was going to "explain" the change as post-Apocalyptic universal changes (they've always been that tough, but PCs from Oerth used to get special bonuses we didn't realize *cough, cough*) and I further hinted that the demons you fought were "recently empowered" (as if by spirit magic, powered by local rivers and lakes...hint, hint). But, yes, you may have noticed that I was using 2E hill giants (quite a bit tougher) and Charn/Etheria has been suffering from 2E trolls for a while. Orogs are, BTW, 2E too. To spell it out for the newer players, though, other places where I still use 1st Edition rules: * combat charts! * druid and ranger classes (although I do allow cross-over with the "hunter" class) * specialist spell-casters, like illusionists, necromancers, summoners, etc * old school bards (although you can also play the Dragon's bard AND the 2E bard as well, with ALL the kits allowed too!) * level limits -- I'd actually like to discuss that one at some point * a couple of individual spells -- item comes to mind...
