The heroes (Manasti, Bradeen with Dale, Sven, Draegar, Claude, Svala, and Worf) spoke with Mandar and agreed to bring the girls (Rose, Amber, and Kitty) to the safety of Ian Northbrook's fief of Angel's Forge some two days south-east of the gate. In order to reach it, the heroes would travel to and through the warlock, Navroc MacCorval's, fief of Irongate. The heroes set out the morning of 618 / 12 / 27, joined by Faldur, one of Ian's retainers.
The first day passed uneventfully and the weather was generally nice. In the late afternoon, the heroes path was barred by six skeletons armed with spears. After a brief discussion, the party attacked with the young (nine year old) Amber, repeatedly turning the undead and herding them toward the party. A second wave of skeletons joined the first, but with the aid of the (lucky?) cleric of Athena, the group easily manged the fight. During the battle Svala made it a point to protect Kitty and help the young tomboy learn to fight. Svala and Sven turned out to be the most effective at destroying the undead.
Near sunset, the heroes arrived at Castle Irongate where Bradeen and Manasti entered and spoke with Navroc. The other heroes were adamant about not sleeping in a haunted keep ruled by an evil warlock and chose to spend the night in the snow. After a warm meal on fine china and crystal, Manasti struck up a deal with Laid MacCorval to supply the heroes with woolen blankets. Manasti and Bradeen, however, enjoyed the safety and comfort of the castle, complete with brandy, hot tea, and bacon and eggs for a morning breakfast.
The heroes outside, however, found themselves huddling between two fires to stay warm. To make matters worse, in the pre-dawn hours six wolfen attacked, convinced that Worf was actually charmed by one of the heroes. The party-wolfen tried to explain how he had been saved by these humans, but the other pack would hear none of it. In the battle, the wolfen dropped didn't manage to seriously wound any of the heroes, except Svala (who they attacked while she slept) and Kitty (who they dropped in the first salvo). Svala hacked the creatures to bits for their troubles.
The heroes continued on on the morning of the 28th, the last day of the normal year of 618. The snow that fell the previous night made the path a bit hard to follow, but near the end of the day, the group approached the edge of Angel's Forge. Unfortunately, a group of orcish scouts spied the heroes and attacked.
As the orcs charged, the heroes formed a fighting wall. Manasti's sleep spells took out more than a dozen and everyone, including Rose and Amber, did their part. Unfortunately, this battle proved more dangerous as Bradeen was dropped and then Sven slain. The witch only survived thanks to Dale, her guardian chipmunk familiar, and Amber's skill with healing salve and bandages. The cleric of Thor wasn't as lucky. Although the heroes were victorious, by the end of the battle Bradeen, Faldur, Claude, Draegar, and Kitty had all been dropped at one point or another and Rose, Manasti and Svala were seriously wounded.
Shortly after sunset, with their spells exhausted, the heroes reached the safety of Ian's domain. There, the children were reunited with their anxious parents, just in time for Yule 618 the following morning.
