So, this is a topic that might seem QUITE convoluted, but bear with me...
I recently did the online test to figure out my stats in Dnd. I then corrected them to what would be more realistic. I THEN thought about when I'd done my stats back in high school (and my buddies and I all played ourselves). Anyway, this led me thought a whole series of thoughts, including:
* Really? My Strength is REALLY a full five points higher now than in high school? The stat charts could account for ONE point, but FIVE?
* My other stats remained fairly stable -- maybe CHR and WIS went up a point
Doing a game "map" I used six of my seven points then (I'll neglect PER cuz we didn't do it then AND I'm post-surgery). But I was 15 or 16 when I did this and logically should've had maybe three points left to spend, tops. The first response is that this is a fantasy-system which doesn't map to real life. And I'll cop to that. But there are many cases of people "improving" themselves beyond what would be expected -- physically and mentally. And, personally, if I were catapulted back into Dnd today, I'd really be interested in being a ranger, and thus improving my CON by three points or so...
Which begs the question, what are possible options to do this?
No, I've allowed skills to boost stats for at least a decade -- examples include doing Weight Training for Strength, doing Personality Coaching for Charisma, etc. But what about non-classed people? And this is something someone (I forget who) mentioned before and I've been sorta running with for a while...
If a PC WHO IS NOT FIRST LEVEL YET wants to boost a stat, they can spend 1000xps for one point. This would be sorta like buying skills, but it just works backwards. And should only be available when a person is still in their "training" phase -- when they're still maleable. And thus far, I'm feeling pretty good...
But THEN I thought, well, that training should still be POSSIBLE later, just much more difficult -- a place where levels actually work AGAINST you. And then I thought, HOW MUCH a stat changes should also be a factor, to encourage improving suck stats and discourage spiking stats.
So, I PROPOSE this idea, and would like to hear YOUR opinion...
The cost of raising a stat is 100xps times the new value. So to bring a 9 to a 10 would be 1000xps, but bringing a 4 to a 5 only 500xps and bringing a 15 to a 16 would be 1600xps. Racial limits always still apply.
This assumes the PC is ZERO level -- they're still maleable and developing themselves (and it's good play-balance).
If the PC is 1st level is x2. At 2nd, it's x4, At 3rd it's x8 and so on, so that at 6th it's x64 (or 96,000xps to bring a 14 to a 15) and continues to get worse.
