While the heroes (Maedhros, Torr, Idky, Squattingbeaver, Lowdog, Aine with Dresher, Stephan, and Yavin, plus Aurora) sleep, Lowdog dreams and finds out that the marilith is fully healed. The demoness has relocated to Luxor, where she's decided to carve out an empire for herself on Charn. Meanwhile, Torr dreams that he's running away from horny women who have fire coming out of their nostrils.
In the morning, conversation with princess results in Maedhros casting hold person on her. Later, the half-elf agrees to start teaching her Melf's acid arrow using Yavin as a telepathic interpreter.
During the day's wet march, the heroes encounter 11 shadows. Maedhros destroys one during their initial rush. The rest get destroyed after battle is joined. Traveling on, they notice very few animals, but see prairie dog holes. Idky notices that ghouls have dug up the animals to eat them.
The heroes bed down for the night of May 12th, 617. Receiving a dream message, Beaver finds out Turquoise Rain had to flee Sidra's city of Clavell. Something has gone wrong. Undead now not under Sidra's control are wiping out the ecosystem. The blighted area was an attempt to contain it but failed. Turquoise Rain will leave tokens for group to follow to find her. Meanwhile, Lowdog also has a magical dream -- Sidra's power base is nearly gutted. and she has been stripped of all witch spells for violating her taboo to keep Aurora safe from harm. Sidra is now JUST a lich-necromancer.
Not to be out-down, Yavin also has a dream, although this one is psychic in nature -- Sidra is setting up an ambush for the group at a train station. She will be there herself, but the cleric of Celestian doesn't know which city Sidra will strike from. And Torr continues to dream about horny women chasing him...
In the morning, 'Beaver interviews Gorma-Sar about liches: they are at least 13th level necromancers, can't run fast, but high stamina, d10 damage from touch and paralysis, immune to cold, lightning, and non-magical weapons, fire spells hurt them. Sidra's soul will hop into gem and possess another unless the gem is destroyed, thus the party needs to find her phylactery.
The day passes uneventfully and by the end of the 13th, the heroes see the river valley ahead. Maedhros casts idea for how to give advantage over lich: undead will attack us and ignore Sidra.
The party then beds down for the night an hour outside Louisville.
Lowdog dreams that Sidra's phylactery is a rhion stone that acts as a spell bank. And Torr continues to be chased by fire-breathing women in his sleep.
During the night Stephan is on watch. Four shadows enter the secure shelter setting off its alarm. Everyone wakes up and quickly destroy the undead.
In the morning, the group sees horses fleeing from ghouls in the distance on the hills behind the city. An idea spell reveals that in Louisville Torr is supposed to get his warhorse. Another such spells reveals that Torr will get a heavy warhorse that runs as fast as a light warhorse and he will know it on sight. Suddenly Torr realizes the name, Zayüß, refers to his new steed.
The heroes set off in search of Torr's horse. After the first hour, the group meets and dusts five ghouls. After an hour, they encounter four giant rats. 'Beaver talks to the rodents to find out about horses. Following the rats' directions the heroes head toward the fire breathing horses. Around noon ten ghouls arrive which Torr destroys. About one in the afternoon, five more ghouls show up and the paladin also dusts these. Shortly afterward five shadows spring to the attack, but Maedhros destroys this lot. As the day progresses Torr vaporizes first eight and then eleven ghouls and finally Maedhros vanquishes ten more.
The day coming to an end, 'Beaver casts summon animals to get horses to come: tweleve arrive, but Torr's warhorse is not among them. Following the tasty equine-flesh, however are 38 ghouls...!
The party gets swarmed, as do the horses. Idky gets critted in his leg and spurts blood. Princess goes down and gets criticallly hit.
Torr and Maedhros clear most of the ghouls using their divine powers. Idky heals his critical wound. Aine faerie fires the remaining ghouls. Yavin charges the ghouls on the horses, as do Lowdog and Torr. Maedhros dusts the remaining ghouls. 'Beaver tends to princess.
Talking to horses, 'Beaver gets them to carry the party to the fire-breathing horses. No one but Aurora is a competent rider, but these steeds are particularly well-trained and friendly toward humans, working to keep each party member on its back, despite their lameness. Only Maedhros falls off... In less than 15 minutes, this leads the heroes straight to Torr's horse, which is being chased by nightmares!
Torr calls out to Zayüß and the horse charges toward the group. Torr rides out to meet his steed and the nightmares chasing it, leaping off to airwalk into combat with the lead monster. Lowdog also charges, but stumbles off his horse and falls. 'Beaver similarly stumbles off while Stephan rides up and jumps off.
Maedhros tries to stop his horse. Aine attempts to faerie fire from horseback but cannot maintain her concentration while the mount moves. Idky charges up on his mount and jumps off to airwalk safely. Yavin mind thrusts a nightmare successfully and Aurora hangs back to start corralling horses.
Idky casts prayer. Yavin dismounts to prepare a spell. Aine casts sleep but it doesn't work on the nightmares. Torr kills one nightmare with the third slash of his holy sword. 'Beaver shoots a nightmare and crits it in the chest, piercing lungs and organs and causing the monster great problems moving and even breathing. Maedhros tries to cast magic missile from horseback but it fizzles.
Aine dismounts. Idky sets up behind the badly-shot nightmare, which in turn starts fading ethereal. Yavin mind thrusts and fumbles, hitting Torr and taking the paladin out of the fight. Idky backstabs the one fading away while Maedhros magic missiles Lowdog's nightmare.
Maedhros aids 'Beaver to help him attack the ethereal nightmare. Torr tries to use his holy sword to dispel the etherealness but only manages to dispel the party's spells.
'Beaver chases the nightmare attacking it, but it goes into the deep ethereal and escapes.
