The heroes (Jason, Bart, Gazer, Björk, Björkmar, Gilean, Malkierian, Sam, Skiera, Phillip the Mouse, and Svala) explored the third level of the Star Cairn after they found the secret door from the helmeted horrors' room. Suddenly the group is on a giant chess board with goblins, bugbear, centaur, minotaur, and giants...and Bart's the King! Over the course of the battle, Gazer, Sam, and Björkmar are defeated and have to be rescued once the game is over. Svala gains a strange purple tattoo of a sword in the center of her back.
Later the group continues to explore. They find a secret door hiding a room with a rack of swords and a diamond-topped rod. The first time in sets off a trap of burning oil. The second time summons smoke mephits. Björk and Phillip try to sneak the weapons out, but the mephits present too much of a problem and the rest of the party has to get back into the room and save them. Badly wounded but again together, the heroes ponder thier next move...
