Check out the updated link and scroll down to Social Level: www.geocities.com/buddhabear_sj/gaming/howdoi.html#createI've cleaned this up a LOT, especially since I now know quite a bit more about Eastern/Arab titles (what WAS Gygax thinking when he drew up his original chart?). I would love to hear what you all think. Thanks! David aka Saint Moorak Drake (The Baron, Baron of Amberwood, Knight of the Hart) Prince Garlok Drake (Knight of the Hart, Captain of the Watch of Furyondy) Sir Rhom StrongArm (Knight of the Hart, Knight of the Wild March) Borlon the Mighty, Herald of Ra on Oerth, Prophet of Ra on Torsh and various other characters trying to figure out their social position...! 8-P

As an added note, while the link above shows equivalent SOCIAL rankings, these below would be the military hierarchy. Where I've added "or" I'm assuming that the individuals are NOT within one another's command structure, such as the interaction between the king's army and those forces of various feudal lords within the king's own realm (a baron automatically outranks his own general!). Suggestions DEFINITELY welcome (and, for those familiar with modern rankings, please note that I intentionally simplified things -- please let me know if I was overzealous in this endeavor!).
ENLISTED Private (Seaman) Corporal (Able Seaman) Sergeant (Mate) Master Sergeant (Master) Sergeant Major (Midshipman) OFFICERS Lieutenant (Ensign) or Squire Captain (Lieutenant) or Knight or Baronet/Lord Major (Commander) or Knight Commander or Baron Colonel (Captain) or Count/Earl General (Admiral) or Duke King

I have a Seaman character I'd like to make. He'd speak Seaman, have amazing Seaman skills, and rise in rank from Able Seaman to Major Seamen and finally be General Seamen. At that point he'd win fantastical battles commanding thousands of Seaman vessels, to be offered the princess' hand and become King Seamen.

Okay - enough tomfoolery. Looks good. How to asian titles / social level tie in? Does Honor affect social level too?

Alas, but I don't know Asian social systems well enough AND they are not as uniform from what I do know. Basically, in China and Japan, if you kick ass you're in charge, unless you're of "divine blood" (emperor) in which case you're too cool to kick ass. In China, that means the emperor is basical a god and in Japan that means he's a wimp that the Shogun must protect. But it was all far too fluid (or I don't understand it well enough) to map it to Western structures. So, I'll just keeping matching social status to the system in Oriental Adventures and smile politely...

I was updating Torr and thought I'd share his social level "issues" since he's a decent example.
Torr grew up poor and on the margins of the middle class. As a result, his base social level is only 10. Over the course of the kid's ENTIRE adventuring career, there've only been a couple of times when he's been recognized by a large, thriving culture. As result, his social level really hasn't moved much. He gets +1 for name level (9th) everywhere (since that's his own demeanor and comportment). In the Pan T'ang empire, because of his deeds defeating the Dragon Claws, saving people, and helping to "fix" the Celestial Bureaucracy (not known directly), he gets a flat 16. Elsewhere on Terrax where news of Pan T'ang have spread, he gets a +2 bonus, so 13 (10+1+2).
