After taking stock of their situation, the heroes (Maedhros, Torr, Idky, Squattingbeaver, Lowdog, and Stephen) decide to recover 'Beaver's equpiment (left behind as the shaman metamorphed into a weretiger) and quickly search for loot before withdrawing to a safe location to await 'Beaver returning to consciousness. Maedhros passes out fly spells to everyone on their feet, using up part of his spell bank in the process. Torr volunteers to carry the unconscious shaman, trusting his paladin's aura to keep demons from hurting 'Beaver while he's so vulnerable. The group flies back to the spot of the previous fight, encountering six ghouls feasting on their fall comrades. With hardly an effort, Maedhros turns the lot.
Another ghoul shows up while the group is searching, but Torr and Lowdog make VERY quick work of the monster. Stephen finds a ring and a backpack on one of the demons, but decides against touching the meat cleaver / hand axe. The group flies back out of the city and about a mile west of their previous campsite, spying several groups of undead lurking in ambush. 'Beaver wakes up along the way and freaks out -- the last thing he remembered before waking up 50' off the ground was going into combat with some undead. The surprise almost triggers the shaman to lose control of his emotions and fuzz out, but he 'Beaver manages to stead himself and remain calm.
The party breaks into two groups to gather wood for 'Beaver's firegate spell -- the shaman, Lowdog, and Stephen in one group while Torr protects Idky and Maedhros in the other. Once the fire is lit, Idky lighten loads Torr, Idky, and Maedhros so 'Beaver can easily carry them across. Torr, however, must remove his weapons and armor -- he's a big, burly young man while the shaman is none-too strong.
On other side of firegate, just as 'Beaver arrives with Meadhros after having brought Torr and Idky accros, the group spies a big, strange, hairy bird covered in reddish-purple fur next to the lintel of the gate back to Tovag Baragu. The monster opens its 20' wide wings, stand erect 10' tall, hops directly onto the stone gate, and unleashes some sort of mental attack on Maedhros which fails complete. Torr, basically naked, grabs his holy sword from Idky and air-walks to the attack. The byakhee lets loose another psychic crush that leaves the young paladin with a splitting headache and blood pouring out of his ears and nose, but Torr invokes his boon against chaos from the Lawgiver so that a single blow from his bastard sword stuns the monster. Maedhros hits the creature with a Melf's acid arrow as it is reeling and another hit from Torr kills the fiend. Torr then lops off the head to show Black Robe back at Tovag Baragu.
The group steps through the gate and returns to Oerth. At Tovag Baragu, Black Robe casts cure disease on Torr, Idky, and Maedhros. Unfortunately, the Lakota shaman needs to figure out what to do to cure Beaver since his previous attempt failed. Moreover, it is late afternoon and Black Robe has already used a number of spells, so he asks the party to guard the portal while he dream messages an elven cleric in Amberwood, Maedhros' high-priest, Ael'Mara.
While the group waits for nightfall, Black Robe performs the totem ceremony on Stephen and determines his spirit guide is a black panther. The group is guarding the inner cirlce of standing stones when a 20-foot diameter purplish-blue protoplasmic blob slithers out of one of the portals. Idky calls up a prayer, while Torr charges and Maedhros misses with a Melf's acid arrow. In a single gulp, the creature envelops Torr, effectively swallowing the paladin whole. That's when dozens and dozens of rays flash from the creature's countless eyes, hitting various group members:
Stephen: his metals start to heat up, he bursts into light which just as quickly goes out again all while suddenly suffering from megalomania
Maedhros: strangely understands the creature's language when it tries to suggest Stephen
Lowdog: gets turned to stone! =8-O
Idky: another blob appears in front of him, he begins to glow, he slows down, and then gets confused
Beaver: finds himself fumble-fingered AND slowed
Maedhros responds by dropping a wall of ice on the blob of eyes and mouths. Hurt, the creature attacks with another volley of eye beams, although fewer now as the ice storm seems to have blinded many eyes...
Maedhros: nothing happens
Beaver: all previous effects suddenly cease
Stephan: held
Idky: the light on him as well as the image of another monster both disappear, but he suddenly knows what the argos is thinking ("I'd better hurry and kill these things, or Vertigo's gonna kick my ass. And this thing struggling inside me will be dead soon.")
From with in the beast, usign his air-walking for leverage, Torr manages to stab the argos with his sword from inside and is able to cut his way out. Beaver activates ring of plant control to no effect. Maedhros launches another Melf's acid arrow which scores
Yet again, the argos uses its eye beams, but only a dozen or so remain...
Torr: his mirror shield comes into play, reflecting a portion of the beams back at the creature but still the young paladin is struck blind
Idky: all previous effects are dispelled, he beings to light up again and is blasted with a gout of fire
Beaver: also blasted with fire
Maedhros: the blob tries to suggest he throw friends into the argos, but the half-elf resists this and the charm ray
Maedhros unleashes a lightning bolt while 'Beaver cures Torr's blindness mid-swing. The bolt and slash end the argos' life. Maedhros then removes paralysis on Stephan. Unfortunately, there's nothing they can do for Lowdog...
After a few hours the sun has set and a pair of big, gray, muscular monkeys with red muzzles and hands wander through another gate (su monsters). The male beast rushes to attack 'Beaver physically while mind thrusting the shaman and forcing him to defend himself mentally. The female monkey rushes to attack Stephan although the wounds are relatively minor.
Maedhros engages the one on Stephan with Idky. Torr helps out Beaver and stuns the su monster with a single blow. Both are killed quickly.
In the early morning before sunrise, Black Robe awakens after having spoken to Ael'mara in his sleep. The wood elven cleric was of no help. As a result, Black Robe decides to firegate himself back to Amberwood in the morning to speak with Ariana. After a quick conference, he doesn't know precisely what to do, the shaman does have a plan to cure Beaver. First, the beast must manifest in order to be driven away...
Back at Tovag Baragu, the heroes try to get 'Beaver to resume weretiger form. Attacking him does nothing other than hurt him and cause undue trauma. First Torr (apologettically) "subdues" him with his flaming mace. Then Black Robe causes his 25' long magical python to wrap up the other shaman and nearly crush the life from him. Finally, Maedhros uses emotion control to enrage him (no good) and then fear him (while he's already under a hold person because he's so furious -- talk about mean -- he's terrified but can't even move!). Nothing works!
After a few hours, 'Beaver's condition is a little better and the "heroes" try again, first with Torr sucker punching him in the gut, then anotehr emotion control (anger). Unlike all the previous times, in addition to the scrawny shaman bleeding, this time he transforms into the werebeast! Black Robe unleashes a hold monster which paralyzes the lycanthrope. He follows this up with remove curse and then a cure disease but somehow, the weretiger resists and remains furry. Idky then tries casting a remove curse of his own, but it doesn't work either.
Faced with an enraged weretiger out for blood the heroes talk about ways to knock him out before the hold spell ends. Torr demeures to Stephen -- better to bleed him out so he falls unconscious than beat him down with a flaming mace! Unfortunately, stubborness seems to be part of Squattingbeaver's character so while before they couldn't get him to become a weretiger, now he won't return to human form. It's Black Robe who realizes that his health is too low and although a death's door from Idky fails to stabilize him, medicine herbs do the trick.
Van (about the efforts to cure Beaver): "This is like chemotherapy."
Beaver the weretiger now bears a grudge against all the ones who traumatized him -- Black Robe for the snake, Torr for his "friendly" punches and whacks with the "non-lethal" flaming mace, Stephen for open his veins and watching him bleed, Maedhros and Idky, for being dweebs that let this all happen.
After keeping him unconscious until the next morning, the beast "leaves" and 'Beaver finally returns to human form. The other healers immediately get to work tending to his NUMEROUS injuries.
Stephan says he doesn't know what the big deal is. Beaver holds him and explains it to him why it's such a big deal. Pain is pain! Frustrated with all these problems, Squattingbeaver tries to change on his own and fails. Torr slugs him. Maedhros causes anger and it doesn't get him to fuzz out, but he gets into a fight with Torr. "Why don't you try changing form!"
Finally, the weretiger rises again! Black Robe uses a hold monster to keep the lycanthrope still and then casts four remove curses in a row (Torr's suggestion) on 'Beaver. He follows this with a cure disease and FINALLY the disease is cured!
The group has to remain another day to guard the gate until Black Robe regains his spell. Maehdros reduces Lowdog-the-statue and Idky lighten loads him so Black Robe can take him to Amberwood.
Eeps: 2260 (Stephan gets extra 263 for his assassin work to "help")
