The heroes (Maedhros, Torr, Idky, Squattingbeaver, Lowdog, and Stephen) march from the firegate back toward Marthasville with a clutter path from Idky to hide their trail. Maedhros casts secure shelter and after Squattingbeaver and Lowdog search for and find berries for goodberries, the group settles in for the night. The healers use the last of their spells to restore the entire party to full strength and the heroes get a good night's sleep.
In the morning, 'Beaver speaks with spirits to get the direction to the runestone. The various ghosts explain that they do not know the specifics but that they can talk to other spirits as they get into city. Idky does an augury and discovers that two of the other three scrolls are cursed, while the third has some quite potent clerical spells. At Lowdog's suggestion, Torr uses the flames of his enchanted mace to destroy the cursed scrolls while Idky pockets the other one.
The party approaches city and enter the "Victorian" portion. 'Beaver's spriit sight gives him a good idea of where the boundary of the rune stone's effect is. The group sees multiple iron roads that curve or criss-cross each other and they learn from Stephan that this is a hub for the iron railroad. What's more, Stephan explains that there is a giant tank of sea creatures, all major civic buildings are downtown, and there are a pair of "gates" on either side of town (but they don't work). The group heads toward the city center, following rails with Stephan reading signs.
Only a block or two into the shaded mass of buildings, the heroes spy in the perpetual gloom three little demons, four scavenger demons, one larger scavenger demon, four goat-headed demons, nine shadows, and a ghoul. The party braces for the attack and 'Beaver turns into weretiger on accident (he was trying to invoke his lion cloak and got confused). Torr charges goat demons as shadows and ghoul swarm through protection from evil, while the demons initially bounce off Idky's hastily cast protection from evil and Torr's paladin aura.
Beaver attacks larger little demon. Maedhros turns all the rest of the undead, leaving the demons, who swarm Torr and everyone else.
Five more scavengers, four more of the larger scavengers, five more goat demons, and nine shadows rush in. Lowdog mows through one group of the incoming "demonic muppets" but still shadows and demons swarm the group.
Another larger scavenger and three ghouls show up. Two more "muppets", another larger scavenger, another shadow and 10 more ghouls show up. One scavenger demon manages to rip off Lowdog's toenail, hobbling the totemic warrior with the pain and causing his moccasin to fill with blood.
Another "muppet", four more larger "muppets", and four more ghouls show up. Maedhros continously turns these foes, sending all of the undead fleeing. Idky faerie fires the incoming "muppets" and one goat demon that come in to attack Stehpan and Maedhros. Another "demonic muppet", two "demon muppet" witch doctors, a shadow, two zombies, and four red-eyed skeletons then join the fray. The fiends seems to be leaking out of the woodwork!
'Beaver and Torr rush the incoming undead and demons, but the juju zombies and greater skeletons halt both hero's advance. A creature looking like a cross between a demon and an ogre saunters up, a spiked bat in one hand and a wicked-looking meat-cleaver (hand axe) in the other. Lowdog takes on this foe
Beaver gets swarmed but attempts to jump through to continue attacking "shaman" demon. The greater skeleton blocks him and wounds him. After another hit by this skeleton, the shaman loses control and goes into a lycanthropic rage, his human personality totally gone.
Although Torr managed to kill one "demonic muppet shaman" the other "shaman" touches the corpse and restore it to full life and healthy. The two then move about the battlefield "raising" other fallen "demonic muppets".
As per usual, Torr ends up stunning himself at a crucial point, leaving the paladin vulnerable to the two greater skeletons he had been fighting.
"At least he'll be unconscious by the end of the battle" ---Van, about Beaver as he (in were-form) drops to 25 hp
David: "The zombie hits the kitty (Beaver)." Group: "Awwww."
David (as "muppet"): "I have a trowel." Van (as Idky): "You might as well throw in the trowel." As he kills it with a single blow.
Everyone groans...
Stephan gets healed by Idky, goes invisible, sneaks up behind other "shaman", dropping it. Finally, all the demons are gone. All that's left are two skeletons attacking the helpless Torr and a zombie engaging 'Beaver-the-weretiger. Most everyone preferentially helps the paladin. As the zombie continues to fight 'Beaver, Lowdog takes off the zombie's head and then destroys the undead.
Beaver, thankfully, doesn't turn on the party. He does look around and seems rather friendly toward Torr. Lowdog gives him a goodberry, but Beaver doesn't want it. Instead, he goes off looking for something to eat.
The party follows and gets beset upon by four ghouls and a shadow which appear to have been in the previous fight (and turned by Maedhros...Torr mumbles something about "I toldja so!"). Maedhros turns them and the group continue after 'Beaver. The nascent weretiger springs back over the party toward the paladin in platemail. He doesn't like the noise Torr makes and runs back to shush him, spraying saliva on the paladin's face when he hoarsely whispers "SHHHHHH!"
Idky takes the opportunity to faerie fire 'Beaver so that the group can see him in the dark. Tiger-Beaver sees the spell as an attack and pounces on the hapless cleric! Lowdog grapples the weretiger while Maedhros hits him with the flat of his blade, as Torr grabs his tail. Tiger-Beaver is truly enraged now, turns and mangles Maedhros, who drops and bleeds, near-death.
Idky casts deaths door on Maedhros and Lowdog continues to hold him down as Torr attacks to subdue with a flaming mace (uh, yeah, not ENTIRELY subdual with that flame...!). 'Beaver breaks free from Lowdog's grapple and attacks him but misses. One more blow from Torr finally subdues him and, unconscious, Beaver changes back to human form.
Eeps: 1688 xps each with the group now several blocks from the edge of the runestone's influence and over a dozen ghouls and a dozen shadows lurking about, recently turned.
Question: Will Squatting Beaver resist the cure disease?
