The heroes (Ichi, Maedhros, Torr, Idky, Squattingbeaver, Lowdog, and Yavin) rested after having saved the people of Calvados from the skyship. During this time Narrissa and François used and taught Maedhros the cantrip bullet blink as they removed the heroes (sometimes numerous) slugs. Torr, ironically, had the most. Meanwihle, a man, Stephan, joins party with the desire to help the heroes kill Sidra.
The party discusses using augury to see if Ichi were to remove amulet would there be trouble. Yavin's deity, Celestian, said that such an action wouldn't harm the monk but would affect the portal. So the group, minus Torr and Lowdog who even lighten loaded are too heavy for Squattingbeaver to firegate, returned via the shaman's spell to Pommeville. From there, they buried much of their coinage in the ruins across from Deer Leap Hill, spoke with Montrose, and contacted Blackrobe at Tovag Baragu. The Lakota shaman agreed to allow Ichi to leave his quest on condition that those who stayed would ALSO later watch over the Standing Circle while Blackrobe lead a party to attack Vertigo.
With the shaman was an archer, Artec, who asks to join the group. Maedhros reduces him and with the lighten load 'Beaver firegates the heroes back to Calvados where the shaman begins to question Stephan. After probing the new-comer's mind, 'Beaver learns that he is an assassin; the heroes instantly go on alert. But Yavin's know alignment reveals Stephan to have chaotic and good tendencies and the assassin explains that he only kills the most foul and evil. Molified, the group tentatively accepts the man.
Shortly afterward, 'Beaver has an epiphany: Narissa casts magic missile, lightning bolt and fly, but not stoneskin and teleport. So she is an elf. Elves on Charn don't have pointy ears...8-P
The next morning, on what would be the first of April on Oerth, the group leaves Calvados for Marthasville under the effects of Idky's spell easy march. Thirty miles from town, the party encounters four shadows. While Torr charges, 'Beaver reads Stephan's mind to see if he can be trusted. With a positive result, the shaman asks Lowdog to lend him a magic dagger. Before the paladin can reach the shadows, Artec's arrows destroy one and nearly take out a second. The battle is short and completely one-sided...
The heroes continue traveling at an amazing pace.
On third night, two vampires materialize inside "hut" and attack. The more powerful undead smashes Lowdog in the right hip, completely shattering it. The totemic warrior was the only one who managed to awake after Yavin (the watch) called an alarm. One by one, the rest of the party wakes up to assist in battle while three more vampires slip into the shelter in gaseous form. Lowdog activates his light ring to give the heroes a chance (Yavin's rhion stone allows him to see in the dark). The lead vampire grapples and sinks his teeth into prone Lowdog, despite
Maedhros' magic missiles and Torr's sword hack. The totemic warrior, however, invokes his snake totem and manages to slip out of the undead's grasp enough to get unfanged; instead the vampire angrily uses Lowdog as battering ram to attack Torr, hurting them both. The older, shamaic-looking vampire (they all appeared to be Flan) stepped back from Yavin and shrieks loudly, causing all in the room to go deaf.
'Beaver's cure critical wounds on Lowdog and cure light on Torr removes the "tanks'"deafness. Meanwhile, Idky casts sundazzle, catching three of the vampires while Artec shoots two and they go down, transforming into vapor. Yavin casts faerie fire, catching the gaseous formed vampires. 'Beaver's magic dagger is able to damage the gaseous ones and he kills them as they try to escape.
Lowdog and Torr attack the turned ones, and they go down and come back up repeatedly. Yavin calls up a dust devil while Lowdog spikes one that went down -- the wooden stake pierces the monster's heart and the creature turns to bones. The other two go gaseous.
Using the dust devil to keep the vampires from fleeing, 'Beaver repeatedly hacks each vampire with his dagger until they finally rematerialize. In the morning, the heroes let sunlight finish off the last one.
The heroes recovered from the staked vampire a two-handed scimitar, a mithral shirt covered in gold, 2 vials dark green fluid (poison), a pouch with two citrines (100 gp each), an alexandrite (500 gp), and a red potion. From the others they find a dagger, a silver ring, a glowing red potion, and a scroll.
