The morning after rescuing Daj, Marc, and Helga, a group of heroes assembled to deal with the kuo-toan menace. Stephanos, with some insistence from Mikhail, agreed to cure Marc so he could accompany the group. Dion (cleric of Apollo), Sky (Fire Salamander and expert fish-squeezer), Dajamira (nearly naked), Marc (ditto), Pepper (gnomish illusionist), Corvin (dwarven lord), Jasmine (the White Witch of Klarr) and Jyolli (the Archbishop of Erevan Ilserie in Greyhawk) took up the call to drive back the fish-folk foes!
Under the influence of a variety of defensive spells, including free action and water breathing from Stephanos, Todar, and Esmerelda, the heroes charged into the first partially submerged cavern...and into FIVE kuo-toan monitors and several dozen warriors! The party battled with way in, although Marc was nailed with a harpoon in the initial attack, pulled off balance, and stunned. The rest of the group rushed to protect the beastmaster but were largely bottled up by the monitors. This was a repeat of the previous fight were Marc had been captured (although in that case, it was Daj who'd been taken out in the first salvo).
Jasmine changed shape into a pixie while Jyolli turned the houri invisible. She zipped into the room and completely turned the tables with a single bodyguard spell, causing most of the lesser kuo-toa to forget their previous alliegence and form a protective ring around the White Witch-turned-fey. With access to the cave, the rest of the heroes joined the fray and quickly vanquished the kuo-toa. At one point Jyolli was very badly wounded and forced to flee, but Sky more than made up for this, slaughtering all the fishmen in her path and then mercilessly slaughtering all those held in thrall by Jasmine too!
The heroes made sure that none of the kuo-toa were "merely wounded" and searched the bodies. During the battle, Marc had battled one goggler using Daj's shield and the group discovered a number of her magical items. They continued into the underground city, encountering only minimal resistance. Dion and Sky, however, had to turn back, leaving only the other five to continue. The group, lead by Marc, retraced their steps to the holding cells and more thoroughly explored them, free two gnomes and two lizard men (thanks to Daj). The group then set about searching the massive main chamber with the lobster-headed statue.
Halfway around the room, the heroes realized that they had been seen. They absorbed the charge of the dozen fishmen, but noticed one ran the other way, no doubt for help. Another bodyguard dealt with most of the minions, but when nearly two dozen more charged, tossing multiple hold persons, faerie fires, and dispel magics, the party decided that it might be better to retreat. That's when the fungus lighting the chamber suddenly grew dark and the party's magical lights went out...only Corvin could still see, until Jyolli produced fire.
Corvin, desperate to do something to keep the kuo-toa at bay, blew the magical horn he'd recovered battling Iuz's forces during the Apocalypse...and a thick cloud of flesh-burning fog arose, blocking off the fishmen from a direct assault! The party dealt with the stragglers and ran into the tunnels. One monitor ran into the fog, choking and disintegrating, while a second blocked the heroes escape. Marc had just gotten to his feet and recovered his precious +4 defender from the kuo-toa that used it on him, be it was clear he was about to be slaughtered. A lucky spell from Jasmine charmed this monster and her communication spell allowed the White Witch to ask her new monitor "friend" to clear the heroes a path to the surface.
Jyolli's curatives on Marc were minimal and even stubbing his toe would drop the massive beastmaster, but with the last of his strength, Marc picked up the armor-clad Corvin and joined the others bolting for the surface. A sleep from Daj bought the party just enough time to escape, despite the fact that several could no longer breathe water or move effortlessly in it.
Exhausted and battered, the group reached the surface at:
Dion: 30 of 53, out of spells and cures
Sky: 36 of 61
Marc: 5 of 61
Jasmine: 30+2 of 38, four 2nd level spells left, used her adder
Corvin: 58 of 71, cast 1st x4, 2nd x3, 3rd x1, 4th x2
Dajamira: 34+1 of 42, one 1st and two cantrips left
Jyolli: 29 of 41, one 3rd lvl spell left
Stephanos: used one 2nd, all 4th and 5th
Todar: used all 3rd, one 4th
Esmerelda: used one 3rd
Martello: used one 3rd
Oh, and the heroes found Helga's mace too!
