After the explosion nearly killed the party (Ichi, Maedhros, Idky, Squattingbeaver, Lowdog, Yavin, Robyndella with Meldenya), green smoke began to fill the hallways. Thinking quickly, Idky conjured a dust devil which swept the dungeons clean. The party proceeded to the next door which Yavin detected a magical trap on. Squattingbeaver attempted to dispel the dweomer, but failed, so Idky also tried and removed it. Ichi then used the second of the magical keys to open this door.
Within was a skeleton encased in lead and inset with dozens of small gems: a lead golem of Charn. Ichi and Lowdog charged. The monk landed a single blow as he realized that behind him and the totemic warrior were a pair of ghouls, armed with guns and safe behind invisible "walls" with slits to fire out of...! The golem smashed the monk and two shots from the ghoul dropped Ichi. Meanwhile, the other monk unload all of his rounds into Lowdog, litterally blowing him off his feet.
Idky sent his dust devil against the golem to keep it busy. Robyn unleashed a lightning bolt against Ichi's ghoul, hoping to use the blast to get an idea where the invisible barrier was -- by a stroke of amazing luck, the wall collapsed, the ghoul faced into the bolt, it's gun exploded, and it was badly damaged. Maedhros turned the second ghoul. Yavin, meanwhile, dragged back Ichi's body where Idky tended to his wounds and Squattingbeaver invoked a prayer.
The golem destroyed the 'devil in a single blow and lurched forward. Yavin lept in front of it, sinking his spear it the automaton and telling Robyndella to take her shots while he kept the monster busy. Maedhros turned the other ghoul and the healers tended the wounded.
The golem landed only a single blow on Yavin, but it nearly killed the cleric of Celestian. In lieu of fighting (and dying), Yavin dropped his spear and gulped down his potion of extra-healing. Robyndella continued to sink arrow-after-arrow into the golem. Idky and 'Beaver tried to cure the cleric of Celestian, but only the cleric of Fharlanghn managed to finish his spell.
Two more blows from the golem nearly killed Yavin outright, despite all the healing magics having restored him to full strength merely moments before. Robyndella, however, shot a fifth arrow into the golem and it fell. Ichi got back to his feet and struck one of the ghouls, getting clawed back for his efforts. Now, with the golem destroyed, the heroes made VERY short work of the remaining ghouls.
Yavin, barely on his feet, warned the heroes of another magical trap on the final door. Dispels from shaman and cleric both failed, so Yavin conjured his own dust devil and sent it in to deal with the glyph. The trap went off and struck the minor wind elemental blind, but the heroes now secured the area. Following through on Squattingbeaver's plan, they locked both doors in the previous room and settled in for a quick nap from Yavin after the party exhausted the last of their spells healing up. Only Lowdog remained on watch (with Meldenya), so it was only those two who saw the deva, Elvi, appear in the room, heal the most-wounded, and leave.
Refreshed and again ready to do magic, the heroes made ready to deal with the final room, the spook, and the runestone. Idky cast []prayer[/i] and 'Beaver gave Robyndella a firebow who had already mirror imaged. Meanwhile, Maedhros and Yavin passed out aid spells to the fighters. Lowdog down a potion of speed...!
Unfortunately, the door was not just locked by wizard locked -- the magical key proved ineffective but Idky's chime of opening did the trick. Within, 14 zombies and a spook, all guarding the runestone. This runestone, however, had few ioun stones that weren't dull gray and burnt out orbitting it.
Lowdog, still under the influence of the fly spell, swooped over the undead and attacked the spook. Ichi and Yavin moved to flank him and Robyn shot one zombie down with her first arrow. Then Maedhros destroyed almost all the rest, giving Robyn a clear shot to help Lowdog. The totemic warrior landed several blows but the spook failed to do the same and quickly felll to Lowdog's onslaught. The heroes then made short work of the two juju zombies Maedhros didn't disintegrate and pondered how to deal with the runestone.
No one had a weapon with sufficient reach to hit the runestone without the weilder being nailed by the cloud of orbitting ioun stones. So, pooling their resources, Squattingbeaver gave Lowdog his magic staff-spear. The totemic warrior swung several times before finally solidly connecting and shattering the runestone, freeing all the spirits on the ground in the city...
While the party gathered the fewer non-damaged ioun stones, Squattingbeaver noticed a large crowd of spirits gathering around the party. Unlike the other spirits the party had encountered, these appeared to have come from various ages of Charn's history. Using a speak with spirits the shaman learned that these spirits represented the many priests burried over the lost generations...priests to the now-abandoned gods of Charn!
The spirits each chose a party member that somehow manifested an aspect of their god. The Lawgiver chose Ichi, the Just Sun chose Lowdog, and the Healing Earth looked to 'Beaver. The High God in Heaven showed his favor on Yavin and the Everchanging Moon gathered around Idky. At first both Maedhros and Robyndella were reviled, apparently for their race, until one of the few female spirits noted that the half-elven archer used a bow AND bore a dragon-headed talisman, thus gaining the princess the support of the Morningstar. Several of the spirits explained the Maedhros, an "unrepentant" being who's long life defined the will of the gods chose another deity nearly at cross-purposes to the Lawgiver.
The spirits told 'Beaver that they wanted to set right this wrong to the land and would accompany and help the party (except Maedhros). The shaman told the spirits that the deva could free them, but they actually asked NOT to be released until "justice had been served". Accordingly, the party met with Elvi briefly, who passed out a few curative spells and removed the bullets from Lowdog, who then flew out and fetched Cornelius.
