The heroes (Ichi, Idky, Squattingbeaver, Lowdog, Yavin, Robyndella with Meldenya, and Widdershins the unicorn) decided to continue to head toward the center of Luxor amid the deep, shadows of perpetual twilight. The group hadn't even finished healing, however, when seven skeletons emerged from the gloom. The heroes made quick work of the undead and Ichi chose to reconnoiter on his flying broom, Hexen. He spied the rough center of the city, near the Pink Palace, a strange structure of elegant translucent marble, unlike anything else in the dark city. On his flight back to the rest of the party, Ichi spied and was chased by gargoyles, with more happening upon the party at the same time.
The heroes quickly dispatched the gargoyles as well, although one creature broke Ichi's pelvis. The combined spells of Idky and Squattingbeaver, however, saved the monk from any real injury. Despite Maedhros blowing the wing off one in mid-air with magic missiles, the impact did the creature no harm. It was this lone gargoyle that attempted to flee, but Widdershins charged and ran the monster down.
The unicorn ran back to the heroes, six ghouls on her heals. Maedhros managed to turn one, but the rest resisted the cleric's will. One ghoul seriously damaged Squattingbeaver's back while two more nearly killed Yavin. Robyndella used the firebow Squattingbeaver cast for her to rein magical arrows of flame into the undead, killing several. Lowdog and Ichi took out the rest.
After bandaging up their wounds, the heroes continued on for more than ten minutes before more creatures appeared in the darkness. These were strange, gaunt, gray entities some four feet tall with haunting eyes and vicious-looking talons. Maedhros attempt to turn them, to no effect. Squattingbeaver used a ward spirit, however, to powerful effect, completely holding all 18 monsters at bay. Robyndella unleashed a fireball that took out several and the heroes used various ranged attacks until only four were left, who fleed into the gloom.
Three minutes later, a skeletal figure with gray dark-feathered wings swept down...a minor death, it chose Lowdog as its victim. Robyndella unleashed magic missiles on the death, gaining a death of her own to fight. The rest of the party held back, with the clerics healing and aiding the pair battling for their lives. Strangely, Widdershins chose to attack and it quickly became clear that no death would appear to claim the unicorn! Battered, however, the heroes were victorious.
Seven more minutes of walking brought the group near the center of town, where they battled eight shadows. Two were destroyed and the rest were turned. After another several minutes, the heroes found a building, a doctor's office, in which to hole-up. Entering without encountering anything dangerous, Squattingbeaver cast his last ward spirit to create a region safe from shadows and other non-corporeal undead. Yavin set about using his mental powers to heal and then cast nap on the spell-casters so they would regain their spells after a brief siesta. After two and a half hours, thus the early afternoon, the heroes status was:
Idky: full (41)
Beaver: 31 of 36
Lowdog: 42 of 79, 8gbs
Yavin: full (29)
Ichi: 53 of 58, 8gbs
Robyndella: full (32), 30gbs left
Meldenya: full (14), 6gbs
Widdershins: 35 of 42
Maedhros: 31 of 40
The running eep total to this point is 81,020.
The DM would like to apologize to Squattingbeaver -- thinking about it, I gave a bad call with regard to other spirits in the area. Yes, there are far fewer than in Pommeville or Chateauenfer, but there are some. They can offer you your level is bonus spells BUT no more than one of any given level (so, a 1st, a 3rd, and a 4th, but NOT four 1sts and two 2nds!). You may cast these retroactively at the start of the next game -- don't tell me, let me guess, a CLW, a CSW, and something else, right?). The spirits DO communicate that the shafts of sunlight have allowed MANY to escape the force holding them to the earth, but many more spirits have simply disappeared. There is an ominous tone to this information...8-(
