DEATH IN THE INTERDICTED TEMPLE
The heroes (Dion, Marc, Mikhail with Samhain, Sky, Daj, Pepper, Semi, Elric, and Hixotec) tended their wounds after killing Zuggtmoy. The party wanted to withdraw, but Mikhail lacked the power to teleport or shift ethereal, so the young psi meditated while the rest of the party stood guard. Within the hour, a black pudding slithered in from the following room and the heroes attacked. Unfortunately, Dajamira was a tad too eager and used her scimitar instead of a blunt weapon, thereby splitting the creature in two. The men tackle one while the women deal with the other, racing to kill the slime-monsters first.
The heroes continued to rest, but in less than another hour, another monster arrived, a tall, guant, black demon with powerful talons. The heroes readied themselves, but the babau stayed within the cloud of yellow spores, out of reach of the party. The demon's attempt to gate failed and before it could anything more dangerous, Cliffy unleashed a fireball which didn't hurt the fiend but cleared away the mold. Meanwhile, Elric attacked psionically. The demon counter attacked and charged. Semi, Cliffy, Sky, and Daj formed a fighting wall, hacking the fiend. Unfortunately, this babau did what the Demon Queen of Fungus could not -- the demon slaughtered Semi. Mikhail and Elric unleashed a series of psionic assaults, seriously limited what the monster could do, but the pair hadn't recovered their strength enough to maintain a prolonged assault -- the demon nearly killed Mikhail in a flurry of blows.
Without Marc (drooling on the ground) and Semi, the heroes were sore-pressed to deal with the babau. Those who could fight attacked -- Cliffy, Elric, Sky, and Daj as well as Samhain, while Dion and Pepper tended to the fallen. Unfortunately, the demon focused its attacks, killed Cliffy. Elric soon joined the elf. Sammy managed to lock his jaws on the demon and drain some blood, but the babau shredded the giant weasel too. Things looked bleak with only Sky, Daj, Pepper, and Dion still on their feet. The demon dropped the young salamander, but the cleric of Apollo saved her. Meanwhile, at some point during the conflict, Hixotec slipped away, abandoning the heroes. Risking her life, the salamander joined Dion and Daj in combat just as Mikhail used the last of his mental energy, faking the demon out. Sky wrapped her coils around the demon and began to squeeze. Before the demon's head cleared, the young salamander crushed the life from its body, avenging Semi, Cliffy, Elric, and Samhain.
Without much choice, the heroes settled in to wait for Mikhail to recover enough strength to escape. Four hours passed without event and using all of their magical resources, the heroes escaped the Interdicted Temple, bringing the bodies of ALL their allies. Unbeknownst to the party, Hixotec assumed gaseous form and flowed into one of the bags of holding, escaping with the others. Mikhail managed to shift ethereal without trouble, then moved to the surface, where he returned to the Prime Plane and teleported straight to his room in the Displacer in Klarr.
The heroes rested in Klarr the next five days.
Dion spent four days exercising the brown pudding consciousness from Marc's body. Stephanos spoke with the dead spirits of the fallen, to determine their wishes. Alec and Cliffy both wished to be reincarnated, although Elric chose to remain dead. Strangely, Athena claimed Semi's soul and said that he would not be coming back to life now, but someday he would return. Treblo showed up and performed the spells, Alec returning as a goblin and Cliffy as an elf. Meanwhile, Pepper befriends a young gnome thief, Paullie, who joins the group.
On the 5th, the heroes teleport back to the Interdicted Temple where they battled a gray ooze. Afterward, the group searched the majority of the Temple, encountering a carpet of yellow mold as well as a huge, heavily trapped trove of items.
