Just wondering...why don't you use the Gladiator rules from Dark Sun?
oh one other thing...in Dark Sun a gladiator could dual wield with no penalties.
the gladiator was proficient in everything. If he could hold it in his hand (or two hands) it was a weapon. When he spent points becoming proficient it was = to specialization...when he spent points specializing it usually gave some l33t bonus skill...
like a dual wielded polearm weapon (a spear with shortswords on both ends) when proficient gave the extra attacks from 1 to 3/2...and when specialized attacks stayed 3/2 but you got a FREE parry. To help with their defense.
Also the DS gladiator did the piecemeal armor you were talking about. they didn't wear full suits of anything because it cost too much and was not available also it would restrict movement.
I believe their HD was a D10.
They got 1 non-weapon proficiency but it had to be related to gladiatorial combat in some way. They could not read.
There was a weapon skill only available to gladiators that increased armor class. Something called armor use or something. They would roll a d20 every time they entered combat. If they made their check their AC dropped by 1pt. There was another called locate vulunrability or something where each time you hit in combat you would have a chance D20 to find your enemies weakness and strike a -4 to hit, but do x2 damage. Imagine 3 attacks at -4 all doing x2 damage...ouch
Also gladiators were usually LN or CG. They would rule based on the crowd on if they should kill their opponent or not if they surrendered.
They could use magic items as a fighter, but prefered to use non-magic weapons. So in combat if a monster didn't need a +1 or better to attack. They would use a normal weapon before a magic. Also no poison, thats cheating.
