The heroes (Ichi, Torr, Maedhros, Idky, Squattingbeaver, Lowdog, and Yavin) got up in the morning and at Torr's request, searched the library more for books on demonology as well as paper and ink to take notes with. Using one of his comprehend languages spells, Idky searched through the tomes and then later the group sought out ledgers to use. In the process, the party ran into 8 ghouls (that Maedhros handily destroyed) and then later Torr was ambushed by a gallu demon disguised as a corpse. The demon, however, was no match for the paladin and when Ichi attacked as well, the gallu demon disappeared rather than die.
In the late morning, the heroes set out to leave Chateauenfer and headed south, for the outskirts of the city and the road of rails leading to Fleurville. The heroes encountered a band of nine ghouls. Unfortunately, Maedhros only managed to destroy one before they attacked. While the fight was very one-sided and the half-elven cleric destroyed the remaining undead, the monsters did manage to seriously break several of Ichi's ribs first, leaving him partially crippled in combat. Later, the party was ambushed by four dretch which were no match for the heroes.
In the early afternoon, as the party left Chateauenfer far behind them, they spied a huge band of ghouls circling around them far out on the plains. The party unleashed their missile weapons and Maedhros destroyed eight while Torr turned five more. About a half-dozen reached the heroes and attacked, immediately paralyzing Maedhros. Instead of turning, Torr chose to fight and while Squattingbeaver moved to defend the downed cleric of Corellon, the ghoul that had taken him out tore off the half-elf's leg, like a chicken drumstick! Blood fountained from the severed artery and had Squattingbeaver not acted immediately, Maedhros would have bled out. The heroes destroyed the other undead and stabilized the half-elf. Torr and Yavin borrowed the two magical broom and ran down the five ghouls the paladin had turned, destroying them as well. But, when the pair returned the heroes had to face that their cleric/mage could no longer walk, much less fight!
Torr suggested Maedhros use Squattingbeaver's falcon cloak -- at the very least he would be small enough to carry, but missing his leg, a party member would always need to toss him into the air and landings would be difficult! The group followed this plan and Maedhros acted as an aerial scout for the next several days.
The party passed through arid scrub for several days that slowly gave way to greener foliage and wetter weather. The heroes also noticed they were headed up a slight-but-steady rise. On 617/2/3, Maedhros spotted four harpies from Chateauenfer flying toward the group. The bird-women totally ignored the party until Idky pegged one with a sling bullet. The monsters were no match for the heroes, though and died in seconds.
On the 4th, the group found the remnants of crushed ghouls and reasoned that these had tried to ambush the moving car that had picked them up so long ago in Pommeville. On the 7th, Maedhros spied another creature coming from the north, this time a vrock. Torr air-walked up to meet the demon and hacked into one of its wings, so the vrock instead teleported behind Ichi, thinking to quickly slaughter a "mage" by blind-siding him. Despite his damaged ribs, the monk spun and damaged the demon, the other heroes quickly coming to his rescue. In a moment, the demon lay dead.
The heroes continued on southward and in the late morning of 617/2/8 spied a large chasm over a half mile across at its narrowest point. It was at his point that the framework of a metal building lay spanning the divide, somehow defying gravity and reason in its architecture. Running through the middle of this bridge-like thing was the road of rails...
