The heroes (Ichi, Torr, Maedhros, Kyron with Dart, Squattingbeaver, and Lowdog) dusted themselves off from the previous battle with Lamashtu, the type V demoness and were about to continue seeking the runestone, when they heard a familiar voice calling out to them...it was Saanau, their former compatriot, the elven mage who'd returned to Oerth. Saanau explained that had been asked by Kyron's family to bring him home in time for his child's birth. She'd simply followed the wake of destruction the party left and found them.
The group now set about finding the magical runestone again. Maedhros' find traps revealed that the door was magically and mechanically protected, so Saanau let loose a lightning bolt to take it down, yet the wood survived. Kyron unleashed a couple hits with his hammer, but the portal again withstood the punishment. Finally, a second lightning bolt blasted the door away revealing a hallway beyond. That when the vrock teleported to the attack, followed by six small, pudgy demons with spindly arms and legs...dretch!
The heroes fairly quickly slaughter all the demons, although the vrock teleports to safety. The group continues down the short corridor beyond, with Maedhros handily spying the mechanically trapped floor and magically trapped door at the end of the hall. Saanau triggers the trapdoor and the heroes ponder their next move, but Maestros' detect invisibility spell is still active and he spies a secret door in the spiked pit that is NOT trapped. The heroes open in and find a set of stairs leading in precisely the direction Squattingbeaver had dowsed.
As the party lines up and gets through the pit, secret door, and staircase beyond, a group of shadows swarm the heroes. Maedhros, however, handily turns the undead and the party continues up the stairs and into a room beyond. In the doorway is a skeleton covered in lead and inset with numerous ioun stones. Beyond is a clay tablet covered with runes, floating in the air at the back of the room, orbited by a small constellation of mostly burnt-out ioun stones. Between the lead skeleton and the runestone is another spook. Oh, and the shadows which have somehow unturned...!
Torr asks Ichi to take the skeleton while he goes for the spook. Kyron flies to back his cousin up and Lowdog steps in to deal with the shadows. Maedhros again turns, dispersing some of the undead. Saanau, meanwhile, and unleashes a wizard's wrath into the lead creature. That's when things got interesting.
Saanau's spell strikes the lead skeleton and is absorbed but the gems studding the monster's body. It then turns, looks at Ichi, and unleashes the same spell back at him! Luckily, the monk dodges to the side and avoids instant death, but a pair of blows from the creature's fists land solidly and the skeleton smashes Ichi into the ground. Maedhros removes most of the rest of the shadows, although some come un-turned. Torr and Kyron are smashing away at the spook, while Saanau decides to unleash her magical missiles on that creature instead.
Now Lowdog is the lead golem's target and narrowly avoids death. Squattingbeaver tends to Ichi, saving the monk's life. With the spook destroyed, Torr and Kyron switch to attacking the golem. The creature smashes the paladin to the ground, nearly killing him. It now targets Saanau and Lowdog observes that the construct single-mindedly attacks one foe at a time.
Saanau tries to engage the lead golem as long as she can, but the thing's fists take a terrible toll on her body. Finally, the elven mage is forced to flee, leaving Ichi, Lowdog, and Maedhros to fight it while Torr recovers his feet and Squattingbeaver and Kyron tend to the wounded. In an instant the half-elven cleric's body is shattered irreparably. The heroes finish off the lead golem, but it's too late; Maedhros is dead. His spirit sadly lingers in the room, watching his allies.
Kyron takes his hammer and smashes the runestone tablet, freeing all the souls of Chateauenfer. The spirits, having had several days to learn of the heroes from Idky, grant a series of minor boons to the heroes in thanksgiving for their freedom.
Ichi's eyes begin to itch, giving him the potential to regain his sight one day.
Torr's inner bloodline is enhanced, granting him better access to the witch-powers of his father.
Kyron is granted the grace, insight, and wisdom of the spirits to impart to his unborn son.
Squattingbeaver is told of a great oak tree at the edge of town whose branches a shaman will inhabit so as to give him a spirit knife of sort, although this will be a livewood club (and spear)
Lowdog, already very attuned to the spirits, gains a second totem to guide him -- a viper.
Unfortunately, as Saanau was not expected, Idky did not talk of a gift for her with the restless, bound souls.
The heroes finish off the last of the shadows and secure the room they're in for the night. In the morning, the group heads out of town to gather Ahusaka as well as find the oak tree for Squattingbeaver. Leaving the building, the party battle and slay a pair of bar-llgura. Later, they turn a number of ghouls, slaying three as well as destroying the vrock which had escaped the day before. With the oaken club / spirit spear, the heroes retreat from the ruins of Chateauenfer to spend the night again of the plateau. A pair of chasme demons attack in the night, but are no match for the party.
In the morning, after a very quick search, the heroes recover Kyron's lost hand axe and head back to Pommeville, arriving some two days later. The group has brought with them the bodies of both Idky and Maedhros, conveniently itemized by Saanau.
Black Robe agrees to raise the half-elf, in exchange for a quest to complete his mission, a quest shared by Lowdog and Idky. Idky, however, must be reincarnated. Luckily, Treblo is waiting at Tovag Baragu and performs the spell, aided by a strange cleric named Yavin. A priest of Celestian, the man says he was told by the Far-Wanderer that his salvation lies on Charn, so Yavin asks to join the party.
Meanwhile, Torr pays Treblo for a series of spells to transport him to Greyhawk and then Dragondale in order to get additional resources before the heroes continue on their mission. He will return on the 19th
