The heroes (Ichi, Torr, Maedhros, Kyron and Dart, Idky, and Lowdog) decide to go back to Chateauenfer and attempt to locate Kyron and Torr's missing magical items using Squattingbeaver's dowsing. They hop on the the brooms and head into the ruins of the city with Kyron using a fly spell from Maedhros to transport his shaman-master.
With sunlight now streaming down, the undead are not so plentiful on the street and there's not a sign of a shadow. A large gang of nine ghouls attempts to attack the heroes while they fly by, but a series of turns for Maedhros and Torr send the lot fleeing. Then, suddenly, Lowdog is telekinetically yanked off the back of his broom and thrown to the ground amid the rubble where a massive boar-headed demon with cloven feet and tiny wings savagely attacks the Flan warrior.
Kyron sinks an arrow into the demon, but it won't pierce his flesh. Lowdog is getting seriously pounded when Maedhros tries to use a Melf's acid arrow, but it misses. Then Torr and Ichi arrive and quickly hammer the demon. He is Tarzig, a rebel who turned against Lamashtu (?). Before the heroes can hear more of the story, Torr lops off the demon's hand and then finishes the fiend. Kyron uses medicine herbs to tend the wounded before moving on. A small pack of ghouls show up, but are also turned away.
The devastation caused by the crashing airship is tremendous; the city is in ruins for nearly a half-mile in all directions. The strange, smooth, iron trail is a tangled mess buried under tons of wooden wreckage, both the ship and buildings shattered by the impact. Squattingbeaver casts his spell and very quickly starts to home in on Kyron's hammer of thunderbolts. Unfortunately, other things also are prowling the rubble looking for living things to eat...
First the heroes spy a large pack of vultures circling in the air far above them. Then the vrock they defeated the day before appears and attacks, but it's quickly slain. The shaman locates the hammer's exact location, but it's buried under a mound of wood and refuse. Lowdog, Kyron, and Torr lift the huge wooden beams while Squattingbeaver squirms into the gap to reach the magical weapon. It's at this point that seven more ghouls arrive and attack...
Maedhros attempts to turn the undead, but fails, so Ichi charges forward to intercept the monsters. Three fun by and savage both clerics. Meanwhile Ichi is sorely wounded by his foes, although he does manage to slay one. Maedhros is paralyzed and the undead begin to feast on his flesh. Just as Idky gets airborne, he sees both Ichi and Maedhros fall, so turns and tries to get the ghouls' attention aware from them. Meanwhile, a ghoul has leapt into the wreckage where the others are digging and another nearly kills Dart.
Kyron takes Torr's burden so the paladin can fight. He smites one ghoul and then goes after the other. Dart, despite being badly wounded and unable to fly, tries to draw the ghoul feeding on Maedhros off, but fails to be as appetizing as the fallen half-elf. Lowdog finally feels he must join the melee, even if it means crushing Kyron and Squattingbeaver who are both now pinned in the rubble. The Flan warrior helps the paladin, but is quickly paralyzed. Torr finishes his foe and runs out of the pit to turn the remaining ghouls. But it is too late; Idky has paid for his bravery with his life...
Sadly, Kyron tends to the wounded once Torr and Lowdog manage to free him. The group decides to keep after the hammer so that Idky's death will not have been in vain. Indeed, until and unless the runestone in town is destroyed, the cleric of Fharlanghn will never know rest!
Nearly ten minutes later, Squattingbeaver has almost reached the hammer when the demoness, Lamashtu, appears. She attempts to charm Torr, who fakes her out long enough for the rest of the party to leave the hole in the wreckage. Maedhros unleashes an ice storm but this is another image of the demons. The paladin then spins and stands in the middle of her image, swing his sword. The demoness never fought Torr before and didn't realize he has an aura of protection from evil; she attempts to gate in aid, but the demon cannot materialize within his aura. Frustrated, the REAL demoness teleports to the attack and goes for Ichi, all six magical weapons at the ready.
The monk survives the initial assault and flees while Torr goes to his defense. Lowdog invokes his enchanted dog figurine to fight alongside him and the paladin. Maedhros attempts another Melf's acid arrow and then a volley of magic missiles but to no effect. Kyron, meanwhile, tends to Ichi's wounds while the monk gives his magical staff to Lowdog to use. Unfortunately no one can land a blow on the demoness!
Maedhros begins using aid to bolster the heroes -- first Torr, then Lowdog. Meanwhile, the demoness has caught and killed the enchanted dog in her coils, claiming the magical item for later use. Just then, Torr lands a blow, wounding the demoness. Lowdog starts using the maximum power of Ichi's staff and starts landing serious wounds as well. The demoness fights on, but clearly the tables have turned. The paladin and totemic warrior each land multiple solid hits until finally, badly wounded and near death, the demoness teleports away!
Kyron's tends to everyone's wounds again and Squattingbeaver finally recovers the hammer. The heroes beat a quick retreat from the city, heading back to the cave as they know that their fly spells will not last long enough to again reach the safety of the mesa. While moving through the outskirts of Chateauenfer, a massive, fat, frog-like demon telekinetically yanked Torr off the back of the broom he was flying, but the paladin just air-walked right at the monster!
The demon is clearly surprised and didn't expect much resistance. "But, Lamashtu, said..." it sputtered. Lowdog and Ichi join the paladin and the demon is nearly dead in seconds. Instead of retreating or teleporting away, however, the monster unleashes a powerful psychic assault on Torr, intent of taking the paladin with it! Only his protective aura saves Torr from having his brained turned to a reddish-gray haze; he slices through the demon's head for the effort!
Exhausted, the heroes reach their cave some hour later, having finished the end of the journey on foot. Kyron takes a chunk of Idky's wing leather and buries the rest of the body, so as NOT to attract any more carrion eaters. The group rests and just after nightfall, spy a group of six ghouls coming to investigate them. Maedhros turns four of the ghouls and the heroes slaughter the other two, then Dart stings the fleeing ghouls and with a bit of work, get the undead to chase him back to the other heroes, where the lot are summarily destroyed.
In the morning the heroes' status is:
