[glow=red,2,300]Welcome to the Meat Grinder![/glow]
After resting for three and a half hours, the heroes (Torr, Ichi, Kyron and Dart, Maedhros, Woody, and Idky) are able to move again and after the clerics exhaust their spells and everyone eats goodberries, they can even handle a few kobolds! The group heads back to the gate, with Woody taking point.
First they encounter and quickly dispatch seven more massive maggots. Then two ghouls show up, who the party manages to dispatch. Before slipping back through the gate, three more ghouls arrive, but these too are taken out.
Back on Oerth, Black Robe uses what spells he has left to heal the party and in the morning of the 19th, as they get ready to return to Charn (near full health, but still a little banged up), Treblo arrives briefly with Saanau, the elven battle-mage. Saanau and Torr once adventured together when the paladin was still a young neophyte. The elf maid agrees to go with the party and offer her spell support. Together, the seven heroes return to perpetual darkness of Pommeville and immediately set out for a hike down Deer Leap Hill to the church and, they hope, the runestone...
Which is when four ghouls jump the heroes. Kyron is paralyzed and Idky nearly killed, but the other fighters trash the undead quickly. Before arriving at the ruined church, the heroes destroy three more ghouls and are in decent shape (except Idky, who's really in a little over his head on the whole adventure).
Torr and Wooden Thighs take point, peering into the remnants of the old temple. The stained glass windows are all shattered, the pews not more than kindling, while the far side of the structure is scorched and damaged from Kyron's phoenix arrow/fireball. That's when the party sees the undead. TEN ghouls, two of whom are armed with "six-shooters"! The heroes have time for a gasp but nothing more before both "gun-slingers" empty most of their ammo into the Flan werelord...who just chuckles at the ineffective assault and leaps to the attack! Now where did the phrase "silver bullet" come from?
Torr steps up to help Woody, with Kyron and Ichi taking the other side. Maedhros attempts to turn back the undead (and fails) while Saanau unleashes magic missiles. Then Woody is paralyzed by a lucky shot. Idky moves to defend him, but is ripped open and nearly killed outright in a single round. Kyron falls victim to the paralysis too and only Dart prevents the ranger from becoming ghoul-chow. Ichi crumbles as well while Maedhros finds himself in direct melee. Saanau steps up to lightning bolt four ghouls, but Dart doesn't understand and remains in the way. The blast parts around the pseudo dragon (LUCKY!) but doesn't manage to do much to the ghouls. For her troubles, Saanau is paralyzed and her arm broken. Dart is knocked from the air then savaged while trying to flee outside the temple. Maedhros drops about the same time, leaving only Torr against seven ghouls (one down!) with the two wounded "gun-men" waiting in the back.
The paladin battles the undead for several minutes, becoming fatigued quite quickly. Despite his magical platemail, enchanted shield, combat training, shield skill, and holy aura, several undead land blows on him, but the paralysis refuses to take hold. Suddenly it's clear what the orange stone does! Torr fights for nearly two minutes before any of his companions recover. Unfortunately, by this time, the ghouls have begun to chew off Wooden Thighs' face while Idky has some sort of spinal injury. Things are looking quite bleak since the paladin is nearly exhausted and facing six ghouls, albeit in the "safety" of the corner of the church. That's when Kyron gets up. A single bullet grazes the ranger, who kills one ghoul and pivots around another for cover. That's when his cousin kills drops one of his own ghouls. Now Saanau gets up, shaken and unable to use her right hand, but activates her flying boots and manages a magic missile spell that kills THREE ghouls. The odds are looking up!
The remaining ghouls with "fire-arms" unload into the ranger and elf, but amazingly there is no serious damage. Kyron nearly takes out one of the "shooters" but is paralyzed again for his attempt. Saanau lasts only a single attack longer. Meanwhile, Torr is down to one (wounded) ghoul. The two who've taken out the ranger begin to feast on the man, causing serious damage to his legs and breaking many ribs. Torr air walks away from his foe, now able to safely invoke his lay-on-hands ability as well as eat goodberries without fear of withing "gun-fire". Time to return the favor! Torr tosses a hand axe and kills one ghoul. Then he uses up most of his arrows on another. The one remaining ghoul decides that discretion is the better part of valor and retreats down the stairs, leaving Torr with the bodies of his party members...
The young paladin drags his cousin, the ranger, to the relative safety of the outside, then gets Ichi. About this time, Kyron and Saanau recover from the paralysis. Both young men begin triaging the wounded, using up the last of Torr's healing salves, while Saanau scouts out a place to rest. Ichi is simply unconscious while Maedhros is in a coma. Miraculously, Idky isn't dead, but only just barely -- his spine is exposed and the injury appears quite severe. Most of Wooden Thigh's face has been gnawed off and there's clear fluid leaking from the Flan's ear-"stumps" (pig ears, puma ears -- the ghouls seem to like them both!). Saanau is in decent shape, although definitely wounded. Kryon's awake but his legs are trashed and his ribs broken in a dozen places, leaving him unable to really fight. Dart is bleeding to death but stable for the moment. Torr is barely able to stand.
That's when Saanau spies four ghouls approaching, one armed with another "thunder club". She zips into the air with her sandals and attempts a wizard's wrath but her broken arm foils her. A single shot from the "gun-slinger" takes out the flying elven mage, shooting her in the broken arm and out of the sky. The crash to the ground causes further damage, nearly snapping her neck. Torr grabs Kyron's gaseous form stone, quaffs his potion of invulnerability, and takes a heroic stance above the church wall. The ghoul empties his weapon's ammo at the paladin, but the lead missiles bounce off the young man's potion-enhanced chest. Once there's no threat of missile fire, Torr jumps down, grabs Saanau, assumes gaseous form, and brings the elf to safety. With the ghouls headed in the wrong direction, Torr and Kyron manage to get everyone to the house that Saanau had scouted out.
The paladin, now wearing Saanau's sandals, left the werelord in front of the church, "because he's covered in blood and it's too dangerous; I could become infected." Kyron insists Torr retrieve the Flan warrior; the paladin finally agrees, using sheets from the house to wrap the downed werepuma and contain the bleeding. Torr then flies back to the ghouls and from the safety of the air uses up all of his remaining arrows as well as Maedhros' and most of Kyron's, pin-cushioning the "shooter" before dropping his bow. The paladin pulls out his crossbow and starts unleashing it, but also fumbles and drops that too. Leading the ghouls away, Torr circles back and helps Kyron tend the fallen heroes.
Meanwhile a pair of massive maggots has come upstairs to investigate the delicious scent of fresh meat! Kyron, barely able to stand much less fight, manages to toss one of his hand axes and kill the lead monster, but the second latches onto the hapless young ranger, separating several of his already-floating ribs and draining quite a bit of his blood. Although no match for a house cat, the maggot nearly kills the ranger before a lucky axe swing finishes it.
Torr gathers up Maedhros and using Saanau's boots, flies back to the gate and Black Robe. On the other side, the Flan shaman restores the half-elven cleric to consciousness. Torr and Maedhros return to the others, where the cleric of Corellon heals everyone to consciousness, save Woody. Unfortunately, it's been nearly an hour since the battle. Saanau's arm has become gangrenous while Idky is a paraplegic. Wooden Thighs is a dead-man without Black Robe's medicine herbs, and he has almost no nose, cheeks, or ears left.
At the insistence of Kyron ("he's Black Robe's brother-in-law, if nothing else, not to mention your party member!"), Torr agrees to air walk the were-creature back to the gate where the shaman can heal him. But, because air walking is slow, the paladin will take the long way above the river. Meanwhile, the rest of the party makes a bee-line for the cover of the woods and back to the hill, depending on Saanau's boots to get over the river.
The larger group is just reaching the edge of the trees at the crest of Deer Leap Hill when they spy three ghouls guarding the gate. Unable to handle a stand-up fight, Maedhros dons the boots and flies to the side of the group, coming up in front of the undead and turning the ghouls. As the party leaves through the stone lintel, Torr and Woody arrive and everyone returns to Oerth.
Black Robe uses the last of his spells on the heroes and watches over them while they rest. The group also finishes the last of their goodberries. In the pre-dawn of 616/12/20 their status is:
Maedhros: 24 of 30
Wooden Thighs: 7 of 55 with -7 Charisma and -3 Perception as well as fairly severe brain damage
(the ghouls didn't have fava beans or chianti, luckily!)
Kyron: 41 of 64 (but otherwise fine, thank you cure serious wounds!)
Dart: 10 of 16
Idky: 17 (full! Again thank you cure serious wounds!)
Ichi: 14 of 41
Torr: 20 of 55 (with a bullet secretly lodged in his neck, but since paladins are immune to disease, sepsis won't be a problem)
Saanau: 10 of 45 with a broken right arm, a bullet in the arm, and serious necrosis
