Who's WHO of Oerth

So, as many of you know, I send around a spreadsheet every year or so with a list of all the PCs, sorted by player. On the list is the character's name, class, level, deity, totem, current location, and home location. I use this info so cross-over games can be more meaningful and I can leverage it for other games.

Well, I'm planning on doing it again, but something I was thinking about occurred to me too. When Rachel joined, I realized that she isn't familiar with some of the names (PC and NPC) which we bat about. It would be reasonable to have a primer available for the who's who of the game world. This would be especially important for new players, but even handy for older ones.

For instance, any PC with a social level of 18 or higher should be generally "on the radar" of the movers and shakers. Heck, within a character's home region, even a social level of 16 or higher should result in a PC being easily recognized.

Sound goofy? Not really, if you compare it to our world. You can travel the length and breadth of the English-speaking world and nearly everyone will know who Elvis, Madonna, Cher, Michael Jackson, John Wayne, JFK, etc are. Heck, those particular individuals pretty much transcend the language barrier -- I would posit that only Hitler, Einstein, Stalin, Gorbachev, Mother Therese, Marlene Dietrich, Saddam, Obama, and Castro "cross back" into the English-speaking awareness. And what a coincidence, they're almost all national leaders! Making an excellent case for Social Level being the base of notoriety.

Here are some Oerdian Figures who everyone on the continent should recognize, plus a couple of reasons why (all of the Heroes of Abydos are those who saved the world from destruction during the Apocalypse and are now represented on all the playing cards on the planet, courtesy of Istus, goddess of Fate and the Tarot):

In a similar vein, after the last TEE game, I realized that most PCs have no idea who the Druids are on Oerth. That would be those 12th+ lvl individuals who represent the two Circles -- West and East.

Well, my answer goes something like this:

Regardless of how powerful Slee is, he's certainly EXCEEDINGLY unique, much like Ashtabular is. How ironic that each knows the and this helps boost each other's reputation. In both cases (Slee and Ash), the individual in question is so outside the realm of expected that they're immediately noteworthy -- sorta like Pocahontas was when she went to England (or even me when I lived in rural France).

In Slee's case, he's the ONLY lizard man known to be capable of casting mage spells on the planet and in fact, in (conventional) history. Sure, some PCs know of the K'thoi Empire, but that would be a roll vs History AND Archeology at -10 at LEAST unless someone had a separate skill in Lost Civilizations Predating Human History. Moreover, Slee isn't just a regular, run-of-the-mill, garden-variety, hedge-row dabbler -- he's a member of the Wizards' Guild's Inner Circle -- membership in which is more prestigious than most country clubs (yeah, we need to talk about back dues and you buying your membership ring). In addition, Slee has his own tribe who have become a very well-known (if not well-respected) adjunct to Greyhawk's own watch. Gor's (and Rosh's) work (far more than Lucius' and in addition to Rathgar and Thp's too!) here has only added to Slee's reputation, since all of them clearly defer to the Lizard-Wizard. Finally, Slee has a certain level of infamy and heroism within Greyhawk (he escaped Ambrose HOW many times and while he never bested Wing, he left the fight with his scales intact!), since he was wanted by the authorities for a while as well as saved the city from the Soul Cloud.

Now, if Slee's adventures were confined to just the Greyhawk region, I probably wouldn't have added him to the top 25, but he (and his party) have made of name for themselves in Perrenland (especially Schwartzenbruin and particularly for anyone knowledgeable about Iggwilv!), as well as Furyondy, Dyvers, Tallowood, the Gnarley Forest, and even helped save the world in Neregan and on Luna (yeah, that was more Ash, but the two of your reps pretty effectively conflate and eclipse Gamoth, even though he's more attractive/charismatic -- how many people can say "I saw a lizard man lightning bolt this giant..."? Gamoth is merely "yet, another hot Druid").

In Tyris=Flare's case, I don't think she's made quite the name for herself outside Greyhawk's sphere of influence. Sure, she helped nail Death=Adder, but other than that, it's mostly been "bandit-level" threats. No dragons or mountain-sized giants, didn't save the oldest living elf or any major cities, etc. While there IS an island thoroughly convinced of Tyris=Flare's divinity, the polynesian-esque natives don't really have contact with the wider world, so what they think of Her is pretty isolated. The heroes of Abydos all know about her as do the Grateful Dead and Explorers of Morgan, but until she comes back among the Flanese, those exploits are going to be "unknown acts of grandeur" (similar to if Kalavor eats a dozen mind flayer in the woods, no one cares how stinky his farts are because no one smells them.... While she deserves more notoriety, she's suffering from the X-Men syndrome while Slee finds himself in more of an Avengers' scenario.

Tetsuko, you will note, not only made the Top 25, but got a higher place that Scaley-Green. She is, after all, now a playing card (collect them all!).

As for Keph, well, her only notable exploits (other than being an outlaw, dodging assassins) have been to break up a Slavers' ring along the Wooly Coast and marry (above her station) into a Duke's family. Her "Greek" work isn't exactly common knowledge outside the Medegian circle (and wouldn't exactly be that "neat" unless someone WAS "Greek").

Naturally, these are merely my opinions and I would happily be convinced that I'm wrong / to revise them with a clear and logical counter-thesis.

p.s. -- Ash falls into Slee's category as the only living animal known to cast spells. What's more, it's somewhat known that she was born a tiger kit, raised by a druid (what's his name?), adventured, killed giants and dragons (saved Hannock!), was a human for a while, got turned back into a tigress, slaughtered countless mind flayers (despite being psi-meat) and even destroyed an elder brain pool, killed the "unkillable" semi-divine giant Morag and later a "mech" and an iron dragon (when she was over 25' long!) thereby effectively freeing the whole nation of the Highlands, helped save Greyhawk and THEN threatened to eat each and every hobbit in Elmshire when her cubs turned up missing, etc, etc. Since the two of them adventured together, they're like Batman and Superman in the Justice League -- Green Lantern (Gamoth) gets lost in the shuffle, even if he is tougher (arguably -- and taking the analogy further, which Druid / GL are we talking about? vs the ONE and ONLY Wizard-Lizard or Ether-Tigress or Last Kryptonian or only-powerless-schlub-who's-clever-enough-to-kick-Kal-El's-ass).

Sounds good. Slee also was part of the strike team that beat up the Scarlett Brotherhood's Fr. Ligate's dungeon and recovered...um something important, but it was major kudos. Few if anyone outside the Wizard's Guild Inner Circle would know about that, but to those who did, it'd be a bonus point.

Tetsuko's notoriety comes from her class -- she has like 82 honor -- she automatically gets songs written about her & stuff.

Anyhow, at risk of Van's head exploding from talking about him further - does being an Inner Circle wizard afford a character any social level?

Seriously, joining the Inner Circle of the Guild would bring someone at least to the top of Middle Class (14) and add a +1 to anyone else. It also gives a certain level of authority in Greyhawk (you can cast spells TO PREVENT A CRIME or DEFEND THE CITY without having to explain yourself -- sorta like professional courtesy between cops and firemen and paramedics). Anyone in the Inner Circle would be "known" to the various Guilds in town (and generally considered "off limits" accordingly, unless they did something "over the top"). Moreover, such figures are fairly "public" and therefore get noticed far more often than their social level would normally account for (in town). Finally, such figures would make the "who's who" list of mages across the continent and therefore their name would at least be heard of in Rel Astra or Rel Mord among those who pay attention to such things (and MUCH farther afield in the case of a spell-casting lizard man!).

Greyhawk's mayor would be like the Californian Governor
Members of the Directing Oligarchy would be like US Senators (note, more prestige in comparison to our world...and don't even THINK about pulling one over for speeding unless Feinstein is plowing through joggers)
