Whether a mage or witch, a familiar enjoys certain sensory abilities as a function of its form. For instance, a cat gives "excellent night vision and superior hearing" while a hawk gives "very superior distance vision". But what does that mean?
Here's what I propose:
The sense in questions (hearing, smell, night vision, distance vision, etc) is enhanced to at least TWICE the PCs standard value. So a weasel ("superior hearing and very superior olfactory powers") would grant DOUBLE the base hear noise to the mage/witch and TRIPLE the sense of smell (since it's "very superior"). This would probably equate to alertness with regard to the sense in question (or alertness +3 in the "very superior" instances of hawk and weasel).
Thus, a mage with a cat familiar only suffers a -1 to perception checks at night (instead of -4) while a witch with a toad always gets the benefits of alertness (unless attacked by an invisible foe or one duo-dimensioned behind her!).
Whaddya think? David
