Howdy folks,
While going through some of the information on witches and their familiars, something came up that I'd like to share. Basically, it seems like there are several points where a witch and/or her familiar gain a "soft" ability (or bonus power) through the synergy between other talents.
For instance, if a witch/familiar takes the perk xfer hit points, then the witch can take from the familiar one half (round up) of its full hit points at any given time. Doing so would stun the familiar and preclude transferring any more hit points. If, however, a witch also took the perk independent mind also, then the familiar could transfer the "other half" of its hit points (can't go negative!) in the same round. So, by taking both of these perks, the witch and familiar enjoy the "soft" additional perk of having a larger amount of hit points to "send down the pipe".
Another example follows. If a witch takes share spells and then spell conduit, the familiar can act as a remote "touch" or source for the witch's spells. Now, if the same familiar also took hold spell, then the witch should be able to use the spell held by the familiar and cast it, albeit at the familiar's location. Add mind link and the witch should be able to use the spell from either location.
In a similar vein, if a witch/familiar with the above perks also had the perks of spell book, thought link, and mind link, then it would be reasonable for the familiar (now acting as a limited spell book) to transfer whole spells from its mind to the witches via the spell conduit and mind link much like a pearl of power, in essence allowing the witch to have many more spells slots than she has spells she can cast (and somewhat mimic a cleric/druid's ability to call spells "on the fly" albeit from a smaller list).
Other ideas? Sure!
A witch/familiar with thought link, mind/sense link, and manipulative paws could read spells from her spell book through her familiar's eyes. With only a sense link, however, the spell might get corrupted as the familiar's brain processes some of the info (roll to understand the spell with the lesser Int, for instance).
A witch/familiar with share senses also takes an additional familiar form, so now the witch enjoys different senses as the familiar shifts to different shapes.
Clearly, there are many other options; this is only the tip of the iceberg.
Whaddya think?
