The Destiny sailed on to Safe Cove on Firethorn Island. The goal was to possibly pick up one or two new crew members and then head forward on to island.
On the 27th, the ship was rounding the northern edge of the reefs, when Abraham suddenly just jumped overboard. William cast a water breathing spell and jumped in after the hapless crew man. Su transformed himself into a sahuaghin and followed suit, while Py!ota Benga lashed the wheel, tied himself off to a line, and followed, Asha on his shoulder. The pygmy hit the water, but he and the monkey took a moment to get their bearings and realize what was going on. It appeared that both Abraham and William were tangled in the kelp, but Abraham was convulsing with no bubbles coming from him, while William was trying to strip and mount the seaweed! Meanwhile, Su-the-sahuaghin was slashing at the fronds, but they were strong enough to resist his claws...!
That's when Asha let loose with a volley of magic missiles on the fronds around Abraham. Py!ota grabbed the sailor, but with his last strength, the crewman resisted, trying to remain in the kelp. Then a strike from Su slashed through the fronds and suddenly Abraham was panicking, thrashing for the surface!
At this point, the other strange patch of seaweed began swimming away at blinding speeds. Unfortunately, William's abilities as a sea-druid allowed him to follow suit. Asha had an instant, and Su swam her to the surface. From there, the little monkey unleashed a lightning bolt which fanned out, catching the mobile sea frond, but not William. Whatever the thing was, it was momentarily incapacitated. Using the time, Su and Asha closed, the monkey letting loose another volley of magic missiles, which finished the kelpie and broke its charm on William.
Py!ota did a quick search of the coral beds where the seaweed-creatures were. There, after getting cut by fire coral clearly grown as a deterrent, the little pygmy found a grotto with some rusted metal. Moving to investigate with William and Su, the group discovered the kelpies lair and the remains of many victims. William even spoke with the small crabs and other bottom-feeding crustaceans there, learning that the kelpies had been operating in the area for some time and feed the fleshy remains to these animals. The group found a number of sealed potions as well as a scroll tube and an enchanted scimitar.
Everyone returned aboard to cheers! It isn't every day that sailors are saved from kelpies, much less both are slain! And with loot!
The Destiny sailed into Safe Cove in the afternoon and stayed overnight, picking up two new crew members. They and Py!ota had a number of discussions about the current situation on Firethorn Island. On the 28th, the ship set sail again for the island with the ruins, known to the inhabitants of Safe Cove as Rumelia.
Late in the day of 617 / 2 / 4 the ship anchored in the large natural harbor of the island. In the morning, Jamal, Arthur, Asha, Py!ota, William, and Su entered the interior, Asha befriending a pair of apparently-orphaned baby monkeys en route. Asha took a quick detour, putting the younglings in Jamal's room, which they proceeded to trash, shredding his pillow for nesting material and using his cot as a latrine!
Meanwhile, the group descended into the ruins and did a quick recon of the region where the Grecian-like priests had done their sacrifice. Suddenly, nearly a dozen cat-sized bats attacked. The heroes made quick work of them, although Py!ota was slightly injured. The heroes moved on and Py!ota was ambushed by a pair of men in ancient, Grecian-like platemail. Soon, he was surrounded by them, two more similar men, and over twenty skeletons! Falling back, the pygmy held the hall.
At the same time, Su realized that 10 more skeletons were charging the group's rear, leading the shadow-wolverine creature in tow! Asha, however, dealt with this threat -- after Arthur lobbed a volley of magic missiles at the strange creature, the monkey followed up with a lighting bolt down the hallway that destroyed all the undead.
Py!ota fought forward and he and Jamal took either fork of the passage. William took a man in armor near the junction and Asha went into combat to support Jamal, periodically using her burning hands power to clear large swaths of undead away. Su stayed in the back, scouring the man's mind until William was in trouble.
After several minutes, the party finished off the last of the four men and all 40 skeletons. Victory!
