Using the map captured by the higher level party, the lower level group (Arthur, Su, Jamal, Asha, Py!ota, William, and Jack) began systematically exploring the upper level of the dungeon complex. After moving through bat guano-filled rooms, the group met and quickly dispatched four lizardmen out hunting. Asha then used her burning hands to fry a room full of giant centipedes.
The heroes continued on, with Py!ota suddenly triggering a spear that impaled his right leg, leaving it broken. As the heroes moved to heal him, a band of gnolls ambushed them. Arthur's magical missiles dropped the lead creature and Su and Jamal charged into the fray. Asha then used a stinking cloud to take out the back half of the gnoll group. The heroes made quick work of the creatures, although Su and Jamal did go into the cloud to take out stragglers. Given Py!ota's condition, the group returned to the Destiny for Cloe's healing.
On the morning of the 7th, the heroes returned, Py!ota no worse for wear (NICE repair injury spell!!). Py!ota suggested using the secret door to come up behind any remaining gnolls. Unfortunately, that didn't work. Just as Py!ota lead the group back to the location of the previous fight, he saw a gnoll up ahead. The pygmy-mariner charged, only to see the gnoll intentionally trigger the spear trap again and run. Teh heroes gave chase, but in the confusion, the gnoll escaped.
The group decided to explore the lower reaches of the dungeon. Descending into a huge cavern with stairs along one wall and rubble in the middle, the group headed for a passage in the southern wall. Unfortunately, this was part of an elaborate trap. Just as Jamal reached the room beyond and saw a single gnoll guardian, four gnoll archers began to pepper the heroes with arrows.
Jamal charged through the garbage filled room, falling 20' into a pit trap. Jack took out the gnoll, but seven more came to its rescue. Luckily a lighting bolt from Asha and a web from Arthur quickly evened the odds...
Meanwhile, the heroes were ducking for cover from the archers. After several volley, Su suddenly charged forward, saying something about a gnoll "dog brother" coming to cast spells. Trusting to his doppleganger abilities, Su fell into the midst of the gnolls, but got wounded in the process. That's when Arthur dropped another web on the lot of them. Su dodged out of the effect, but nearly all the gnolls were caught. He slaughtered one and Py!ota and Arthur used missile weapons on the other. meanwhile, the dog-brother started tossing sleeps across the web, first taking out Py!ota and then William. Finally, Asha came up and using the medallion, lightning bolted the bulk of the gnolls.
That's when things got crazy! The heroes surged forward, only to find more gnolls coming in. And that's when the dog-brother hit the group with a web of his own, trapping Su and Asha (and Arthur) on his side. Leading a pair of grizzly bears, three gnolls charged forward, although because of space, only the bears and one gnoll could get in. Arthur did a web back, nailing the spell-caster and most of the gnolls, effectively sandwiching the combat between two masses of sticky strands.
Su fought well, supported by William's faerie fires against the bears, but with a series of lucky blows, they and the gnoll dropped the doppleganger. Asha charged up and did a scare which sent the foes skittling away, buying time for Arthur to burn Py!ota and William out of the webs (ouch!). The pygmy-mariner grabbed Su and the group fled before the gnolls could breach their web. At the head of the stairs, William restored Su to consciousness, and the group returned to the Destiny.
