On the morning of the 20th of November, in the Common Year 616, the Destiny set sail from Muluk. Aboard the sohar was a large crew -- Isaac the Enlightened, Flint, Chloe, Su, Arthur, Sabuto, Orn, Jamal, Asha, Py!ota Benga, William, Abdul, and Shazir Tauresh plus many sailors. The course -- a series of ruins West of the Isle of Firethorns in the Corsair Domains.
Early in the morning on the 22nd, the Destiny spied another vessel in the distance, but the two gave one another a wide berth.
On the 24th, midway across the channel between Muluk and the Corsair Domains, a band of koalinth attacked! The Destiny snagged a massive net which the sea-hobgoblins used to climb aboard the ship. At first, less than a dozen invaders reached the deck, but over a hundred more where en route...! Arthur cast spider climb on himself to escape two koalinth near him. Asha scrambled down from the monkey's nest where she spied the full dangers of the situation. Shazir, the new-and-green kahin, drew a pair of scimitars and slaughtered one of the goblinoids.
Py!ota realized the danger at this point, but took the time to lash the wheel, protecting the ship. Meanwhile, William found himself surrounded and under attack. Shazir was likewise in trouble and three crew members found themselves quickly overwhelmed. Although Arthur escaped from his foes, as he scrambled over the gunwales, he realized the true danger the Destiny faced. Luckily Asha sprang into action; unleashing a lightning bolt into the water in the heart of the koalinth, she electrocuted nearly a third of the enemy force. Although her allies aboard ship were faring poorly, the sorceress-monkey's action probably saved the crew.
Jamal reached the deck and dove into combat. Two crew members collapsed and William was only saved because he and everyone he was fighting was caught in Arthur's web spell. Shazir was also quickly overwhelmed, while Py!ota proved to have quite bad luck. Asha, however, turned around and freed up the pygmy-mariner with a single volley of magic missiles, after a scare took out over two dozen more koalinth -- the invasion was over!
The heroes on deck quickly finished off the remaining sea-hobgoblins, although one grabbed the unconscious kahin and threatened to slit his throat if the heroes didn't release his allies from Arthur's web. Before he knew what happened, another volley of Asha's magic missiles ended his life. Chloe and Orn reached the deck, quickly healing the wounded. The heroes sailed on, unscathed after their first battle on the open sea...
In the late afternoon of the 27th, the ship came within sight of the southern edge of the Corsair domains, the Isle of Firethorns. Py!ota made a series of unusual course corrections and this ship actually slipped by the island far out to sea in the middle of the night. Strangely, however, the crew could see a host of camping fires covering the lowlands of the island, like a vast horde of men-at-arms. The heroes had little time to contemplate that, however, as a winter storm hit, spinning the ship slightly off course. With morning's light, Py!ota put things to right and the Destiny sailed on...
On the 4th of December, another, swifter pirate vessel came up on the Destiny's flank. Clearly, pirate's had marked the ship. Py!ota's knowledge of these regions told him that a sufficient show of force would dissuade a lesser force -- so he convinced Flint to lob a fireball across the pirates' bow. The corsairs came about and sailed off.
By the evening of the 6th of December, Py!ota was fairly sure the Destiny was near their destination and in the morning set about a search pattern to find the island the heroes were searching for. The search was rewarded on the morning of the 8th. Flint flew over the island and found a small region of ruins in the interior of the 1 mile by 1.5 mile, vegetation-covered isle. Arthur, Jamal, Asha, Py!ota, Jamal, William, and Shazir set off to explore this site.
Late mid-morning, the party reached the ruins where they found a series of thatched huts. Calling out to the inhabitants, they soon found themselves best by savage gnolls. At first, using webs and stinking clouds, the heroes were doing well, but more and more gnolls came -- including a witch-doctor which took out William and Shazir with a simple sleep spell. Arthur managed to rouse William -- soon the druid and Jamal were back-to-back, locked in mortal combat against nearly a dozen gnolls! Py!ota again had quite poor luck and was swept off his feet by three gnolls. A fierce axe-blow shattered Arthur's ribcage, mortally wounding the mage. Only Asha was relatively safe...
Acting quickly, the monkey grabbed Arthur's spell medallion, retreated to the roof of one ruined building and lobbed another stinking cloud, felling all but one gnoll-warrior but leaving Jamal and William safe. Unfortunately, the William fell to the gnoll while the witch-doctor slept Jamal. Asha used magic missiles to kill the gnoll warrior and later the medallion to power a lighting bolt to wound the witch-doctor. She gave chase as he ran for some stairs in the ruins, clearly calling for help. A burning hands dropped him, but instead of loot his body, Asha returned to tend the wounded.
Curative magics restored Py!ota to the edge of life, while brisk shaking awoke Jamal. Another cure light wounds brought William back to his feet. Working carefully, the heroes pulled Shazir from the stinking cloud, allowing the kahin to return to his feet. Amazingly, Arthur had not bled out; Chloe had placed a regenerate light wounds on each of the heroes. This spell had greatly slowed the bleeding, allowing William and Shazir the time they needed to use their own healing magics on Arthur. Although the gnoll shattered 11 of the young mage's ribs, he lived.
Meanwhile, Jamal and Asha spied several gnolls poking their heads up from the ruins, casting about suspiciously....
Using 1/2 of Py!ota's potion of levitation, the heroes transported the still-slowly-hemorrhaging Arthur back to the ship with Shazir entangling the jungle behind them.
Eeps for the koalinth were 636xps and 640xps for the gnolls.
