I'm looking at 3 ships:
Caraval - 30,000gp move 12 - skeleton 10 - 200 Tons cargo
Cog - 20,000gp move 9 - skeleton 4 - 150 Tons cargo
Sohar - 17,000gp move 15 skeleton 4 - 100 Tons cargo
They are in order of seaworthiness - 18, 17, & 15.
The Sohar did exist in the Mediterranean.
Also we can alter the length of the ships...

It was indeed the Cog I think we were looking at. We can managed the skeleton crew of 4.
Orn has a 6000 gp piece of jewelry he can put towards the project. Is the 20,000gp cost for a new ship or a used ship. And does that include outfitting?

This is the cost of a new "fresh out of the box" ship, with all the ropes and standard equipment, but no supplies, nor food, nor crew. The prices are designed for the DM to liberate the gold pieces from out of the greedy Adventurers' hands and get that money back into circulation!

I would posit that most "used" ships would cost just as much as new ones. Sure, there might be some older ships that are sold on discount, but might have "problems" that the crew would have to work out during the voyage -- much like buying an old, unused car vs buying one that's been checked out. So, you can spend less, but you better bring a shipwright, spare timber, and time.

So if we are looking at a new ship, what kind of time line is required for build?
And what will it cost for base provisioning/outfitting?
And can we get a number for supplies on a daily/weekly basis? I understand that this will change based on the port but we need to have some sort of idea of what our burn rate is while we are exploring.

I believe the construction time for a Cog is 4 months (according to oSaTS - of Ships and the Sea). But David did say the cost would be the same for a pre-built Cog. So if we can find one (it might take a month or two) we can keep the timeline moving and still fork out the dough. Alternately, we could take over the construction of a previously started Cog that the owner mysteriously disappeared - leaving a ship and bills piling up! Steve

Sorry, I guess I wasn't clear. You can either build a new ship (paying top dollar to ensure no problems), you can buy a known-good ship (again, top dollar), or you can buy out an unknown ship (cheaper, but liable to have problems, hence why it's being sold). In any event, four months should be a perfect time-frame to acquire a new ship.
Which brings me to room and board. The following information is SPECIFIC TO ZAKHARA.
Food is cheap and you can live on a budget for ~2gp per week. Stuff you'd actually WANT to eat is more (3 to 5gp per week). Lodgings in Zakhara, however, are quite expensive unless you own (per the real Arabia cultural model). Figure 4gp per day (including meals though) unless you want to risk being robbed or mugged (I don't care what level -- a knife in the back of a sleeping person still kills), although for about 120gp, you could just rent an entire home for a month (and accomodate both the high-level and low-level parties -- yes, it's about the same price, but you have to pay upfront -- and no, I do NOT use the "common" category for lodging since that's a historical anachronism and projected, western cultural norm). That would be a four-room building with a kitchen and facilities (NOT bath!), so you would have to still buy food. You might want to tack on a couple of gold per person for the baths and other niceties.
Food aboard ship is going to be a little bit pricier -- you have to buy stuff that can last and which has some nutritional value (iron rations!). 5gp per person per week (which is actually MUCH cheaper than true iron rations, but that works cuz you have a full galley). Note, these prices are much higher in the West.
I can look up monthly wages for the various ship-board postions if you give me a list.

We are going to have to have a "monthly" cost for running/equipping/crewing the ship. David - are you planning on charging us a "set fee" at the beginning of the month - each month just like with the Harmonia? That took a LOT of day to day accounting out of the game and made it more playable (note: you ALWAYS made sure we had enough food for LONGER voyages. No free rides or breaks for long sea voyages. The Assumption was we were rarely out of port/landfall for more than 30 days and could "resupply" as needed at each landfall. Additionally, if we DID spend more than 30 days away from land/food/water - you made sure we knew we would suffer. Steve

I don't want to have to record every little thing we buy for food, but if we but enough food for 1 month and then mark off each day of food for the whole crew, it should be easy enough.

Hi, I posted the old crew list on the old crew thread. It gives postions and such for getting crew costs. So here is what I have seen so far 1280gp food while ship is being built =4gp/week for food in town * 20 crew positions*4months *4 weeks/month 480 gp for 4 months rent (@120per month) 400 gp for 1 months ship food =5gp*20 crew positions*4 weeks/month Summary20,000 gp for the Ship 480gp for rent for 4 months 1280gp for food for 4 months 400 gp to stock food in ship ====== 22160 gp total This does not include the cost of recruiting or salaries. There are 5(6?) in the upper party. [Orn, Subuto, Cloe, Flint, Issac, ] so 4432 gp each (based on 5) If we pop it up to 25k gp then we each put in 5k gp and have enough money for salaries/ recruiting/ better equipment. And maybe some left over for the 'slop' chest. Adam

I believe most of this was covered at last night's game.
I would MUCH rather you purchase one or two month's rations "off line" with the understanding that the PLAYER in charge of provisions (quarter master or cook, I believe) keeps a note of days used and resupplies in each port -- since this is a nice plot device, believe me that I'll exploit it if you don't CYA! Steven's right; I absolutely will starve the party if you don't supply yourselves.
I would be nice and fold the cost of recruiting into the cost of salaries -- you're not going to hire everyone in the first day or two looking, but if you pay like you did, then that should cover the cost of advertising.
The ships owners are now officially Issac, Cloe, Flint, Sabuto, Orn, and Su.
