In the morning, Isaac, Arthur, Sabuto, Orn, Jamal, Py!ota, William, Amaryllis, and Epicasta returned to the Lost Shrine. They entered without incident, but a while searching the main shrine, thought there might be something in the shadows. William cast a faerie fire which revealed a shadow demon.
Sabuto charged the creature, landing a pair of blows. The monster, however, threw open the door behind it, letting five burning skeletons into the chamber. Meanwhile, stepping out of the magical shadows were a skeletal warrior and a (lesser) death knight.
The mere glimpse of the skeletal warrior incapacitated Isaac with fear. The 'warrior started to hack up Jamal while the 'knight went for Epicasta. The 'knights fear aura took out most of the rest of the fighters, however, as well as Orn. Things looked bleak. Arthur and Amaryllis unleashed multiple volleys of magic missiles and Orn had gotten a prayer off before he fell trembling, so the mages were fairly effective.
Sabuto destroyed the shadow demon with a kiaied eagle's claw and then set about taking out the burning skeletons. Jamal managed to strike the 'knight twice more, destroying it and dropping the fear aura, but not before sustaining near-fatal injuries. That's when the burning skeletons began to pull out the fire within their bodies and throw it at the heroes! Ouch!
Miraculously, everyone surived and together the group (narrowly) defeated first the burning skeletons and then the skeletal warrior. Orn then set about bringing the heroes back to the surface, finishing off with one of the urns. The group rested in the sun and then returned together for the final urn. The Lost Shrine of Thanatos was empowered no more...
Unfortunately, during this time, Arthur started to search around the room, accidently triggering the trapped secret door the heroes had located before. Luckily, the archeologist stepped aside JUST in time to miss the spear aimed at his heart...but the group found a secret passage. Once Orn had finished dimension dooring the last urn, the whole party entered the passage single file...
At the end of the passage was a chamber with a living man resting(?) on a plinth of stone. Guarding him were six more burning skeletons. Sabuto and Jamal charged in, but the Zakharan was almost immediately dropped, leaving the kensai trapped. Orn attempted to turn the undead, but was struck for his efforts. William whipped off another faerie fire to help the melee. Amazingly, with the very last of their magic missiles Arthur and Amaryllis managed to destroy the one skeleton Orn had hit with his axe, giving Isaac and Epicasta a chance to spill into the room. Moments before the living man had ATTEMPTED to hold Orn as well as Epicasta and Py!ota (the pygmy succumbed to the spell), but Orn's ring of spell turning caused the cleric of Thanatos to be held instead!
Sabuto was hacked down, but not killed. Isaac and Epicasta worked on the two remaining skeletons while Amaryllis cast a kiss of slavery on the evil priest; his secrets would soon belong to the heroes! Orn helped with the end of the combat and Arthur tended to the wounded.
Triumph again!
