Honestly, it does make sense.
For instance, using werelords as an example, when Don and Chris still played, they once had their wererats ambush their party. It was one of those "your magical items or your life". Later, those same two hooked up with an all-evil party that had a complete melt-down -- I didn't run it, but basically the wererats joined up with a werewolf, attacked the Scarlet Brotherhood monk for his javelins of lightning, so he hopped into the camp fire and threw his javelin straight down, catching everyone in the blast...I think Kari, both PC and character, are still traumatized by the event. Afterwards, I believe Jason's drow stole ALL the party's loot and ran off into the woods (at night, of course). Then she (the drow) went to a mage to get the stuff appraised, but mages who deal with drow aren't exactly regular church-goers, so he killed her for her loot.
Don't EVEN start me on my old anti-paladin, Grond, Maker of Hamburger...
It's been my experience that the only evil characters that can actually make a go of it are a) LAWFUL evil, b) have some strong personal or cultural connection with other evil-types (usually family), and c) are mostly in neutral-type parties with a couple of evils thrown in.
Look at recent games: Kephalonia and Erik both worship an evil witch-patron, thus their familiars are lawful evil. That said, both of them are neutral. And yet, they tend to have a VERY hard time being trusted of accepted in parties.
Paul and I used to play a pair of LE characters together -- Amora (champion of Wee Jas) and Ofelia (cleric of Loviatar). Heck, Amora is associated with Sage's temple and works as her "paladin". And yet, they've been thrown out of multiple parties (what was the line? oh, yeah, "I'll get it out of him; I know how to torture...").
Even Sage, 10th lvl cleric of Wee Jas, Hero of Abydos, One of the Eleven, the Queen of Spades, the High-Priestess, has been politely stonewalled from building a temple in Greyhawk because Wee Jas is LN/E.
Andar, the most powerful telepathic PC, WAS LE (as a result of role-play -- he totally played out the Joker's line of "all it takes is just one *REALLY* bad day") and although he helped save the world and made huge personal sacrifices, was effectively banned from most parties. Ultimately, he became true neutral, but because of his past is banned from many groups still as a result of his (admittedly noble) past.
Ray has trouble finding a party to play Wooden Thighs on because were-creatures are all assumed to be evil and, well, non-good ones are really scary. I've had similar problems with Phillipe, my CN werefox. Among my own PCs, I have characters in two camps -- the Drakes equate lycanthropy with evil, while the Talgris' equate evil lycanthropes with enemies.
Hope that helps...
