On June 2nd, 616, the kingdoms of Geoff, Keoland, Sterich, the Yeomanry, and the Hold of the Sea Princes were invaded by giants. Some towns were attacked by hill giants, others by frost, an unlucky few by fire, and the cities by a combination of all three, plus stone, cloud, and other giants. All five kingdoms are struggling to survive against this new and fierce onslaught. A call for succor and heroes has gone out, but with Armegeddon looming already, there are no saviors to be found...so the rivers run with human blood...

Oh...and....YIKES!!!
So sad about Anastasia dying in such a brutal onslaught!! Tragic reallly...but she died heroically fighting those loathsome giants...Of course, the odds were so against her, it's too bad she wasn't just a bit brighter, she may have recognized her vulnerability. But alas, her arrogance and twisted beliefs proved, ultimately, to be her downfall...
RIP: Anastasia StrongArm...you'll be missed...probably...

No, actually, I don't think anyone would miss her...

LOL...true enough...but it would be a nice way to say goodbye to a stagnant character, and allow Rhom to move on and lead a happier life with...someone else I can create a poll on the topic!

Okay, here's my issue with this:
Many of my characters have established relationships with other characters whose players are no longer active (Heidi, Adam, JoAnne, Lee Ann, Don, etc) as well as with PCs who are only marginally active (sorry, Lori, that includes you) or even with NPCs that have evolved into stumps. While I may not like it, it is part of life that divorce and unhappy-marriages happen. Moreover, not every partner is going to "keep up" in life or be an adventurer. So I guess what I'm trying to say is that this gives a realistic aspect to character relationships -- a balance. I mean, we have some SERIOUSLY idealize couples (Garlok and Mina or Asfaloth and Vanor) so it makes sense to also have a couple of disfunctional ones (Rhom and Anastasia or Moorak and Aarondella).
Beyond all that, even were these characters to die, then the surviving partner would either be devastated (Rhom) and/or move Heaven, Hell, and the Elemental Planes to bring the dead spouse back to life, EVEN IF ONLY FOR THE CHILDREN (Moorak). Sure, I was okay with Wing's wife dying, but then she was a dead-end NPC that represented really no role-play. Hell, even *I* used to forget her name! In contrast, Anastasia was one of the founding members of the Fabulous Five while Aarondella not only helped banish Frab'Urz'luu but also saved Treblo from a beholder by shooting out its eyes!
I guess, even when a player leaves, I'm loath to just axe the character (it's been 10 years and there is NO chance Don is going to every play again, even were conference calls from Utah possible, and yet it is only recently that I've finally said "okay, Bart is dead") -- as much as possible I just make the characters disappear mysteriously. And it does work out, such as when Jason briefly returned to the group or Paul Ortiz did (and hopefully will again).
I dunno. It just strikes me as wrong to kill off a character because the player will never play again. I think especially in the case of Anastasia, there is a lot of PLAYER animosity because of the old PLAYER. True, keeping Anastasia true to how Heidi used to player her doesn't help, but then it's also true to the character. I guess that and continuity trump for me.

Hahah - you have to read my reply to Kari's poll - I wrote it before I read this. Yeah, we all know that bunch too well, and as I mentioned there, that's Solinane's (and Dobbie's) priestess you're talking about. The world will actually be short on clerics once it comes online and a 7th? level cleric of Solinor will really be helpful.

Oh, but back to the Giants-
They don't have a bloody hand standard, do they? Aren't all these countries they invaded to the south, on the Azure Sea?

Howdy Elf -- yes, give that man a prize! All of the nations I mentioned are along the western edge of "the civilized world" and somewhat to the south.
There is as yet little information about these attacks and no known standards or even explanations...

You might want to back out to easier ground to defend, because by the sound of it the villages are lost...

Hehe - that was long enough ago, that you'll soon be able to visit them at the Pomarj, I expect. We got yer Old One from the North, Giants to the south, and the EEG buried right in between. No shortage of adventure, for the next 50 years or so. Oh, wait, that's when the EEG's coming back.

Hiya Jeff, Heroes don't abandon the innocent and downtrodden. The villagers who lived in that village are now (at best) refugees and (more likely) slaves to the giants and slated for the dinner table at some point. It's a hero's job to take risks and rescue folks! Why, Elf, you wouldn't suggest that I might foreshadow plots for several years in advance, would you?

Haha - all I can say is I won't be surprised at all once the southern edge of the wild coast gets attacked by the same bunch, calls will go out to the Knights of the Wild March, etc, etc. I'd also be very un-surprised to find someone like Madromo behind it all.
Unlike Iuz's army, serious forces of giants cannot be easily dealt with. Good sized fireballs typically just kill their BO, and only for a short time at that. Long term, I think I'd like to see Quendi involved in saving the wild coast from the inevitable onslaught, however, my characters are mostly unaware of these events, except for Jellie, and she's more concerned with the EEG / ToE at this point. (And keeping baby Trillion safe!)

Hi David,
So the rest of us know a little more, what cultures/ethnicities are being threatened by the giants? How would one travel to these areas other than magic? What level games are these?

The Scots/Irish/Brits are being menaced by the frost giants in the NE. The "vaguely white Mediterranean" types of the SW are being menaced by the fire giants. All of the West, from Lakota on the plains, Huron in the mountains, and the rugged mountain-men of the Yeomanry, Grand March, etc are being menaced by hill giants and other types too.
All of these games are at LEAST 6th level, more likely 8th to 12th.
