As the heroes made ready to break camp, they spied a wagon in the sky flying toward them. Pulling the wooden cart was a flying woman with short blonde hair, glittering golden leather armor, and a pair of hand axes. As the strange craft got closer, the heroes could see an elven bowman scouting from within the cart, but the elf was wearing a Shou Lung scarf on his head. The pair spied the party and landed, explaining that they were the New Heroes and had been sent by Chastity to help the current heroes defeat the forces of the Elder Elemental God. In addition to Soren (the blonde) and Doby (the Elf) the wagon held Jellie, Cindari, and Andonia.
At about this point Kara returned from Greyhawk, but explaned she would have to leave again. She had heard from Tina and Claudia would need to accompany her back to Greyhawk. Meanwhile, in the night Black Robe had received a message that he too would be needed elsewhere and would have to depart. But, at least, the New Heroes would be able to use their strength to bolster the party.
That said, Pigñolé, Ziyi, Ichi, Torr, Ulaanbaatar, Verna, Jellie, Soren, Doby, Cindari, and Andonia set out overland toward the Temple of Elemental Evil. Shortly after levitating over the Imerdys Run, the group felt the ground tremble. Then a bulette attacked. The creature was fierce, but no match for the combined party -- the land shark was dead in less than 30 seconds! The heroes tended their wounds and journeyed on.
When they reached the ruins, the realized that the whole place was stirred up. A huge pack of dire wolves was patrolling the whole inner courtyard. Verna tried to speak with animals and learned that the creatures were summoned to guard the area, but soon melee began. The wolves weren't much of a threat, although one did manage to break Soren's leg. Doby used his bow to rain death on the wolves while the warriors formed a fighting line.
Just as the group finished the last of the canines off, however, a fireball exploded in their midst, nearly killing Ichi and Doby and slagging most of Verna's possessions. Cindari, Andonia, Torr, and Ziyi charged the mage and his companions, but a hold spell stopped all by the half-elven fighter/acrobat. And there was no way Ziyi could stop all three of her opponents from getting past and slitting her friends' throats. Verna charged in to help and Soren flew up and unleashed a lightning bolt, vaporizing three of the foes.
Of the two mages left, one tried to charm Verna while the other turned invisible. Ziyi smashed the last fighter and visible wizardess with a little help from Ichi.
That left just the one fireball-tossing, invisible mage. And he probably would have escaped had Jellie not already cast detect illusion, turned invisible herself and come up to find the guy. She called out "I see you!" and when he turned, floored him with a lightning bolt of her own. How strange that none of his equipment seemed harmed in the SLIGHTEST bit...although Jellie did take the time to bash in the mage's brains with her enchanted frying pan before the paladin could approach (much less object).
So the heroes tended to their wounded and searched the bodies for magic and treasure. Jellie found a scoll, which she read while still invisible. That's why Ichi attacked her when she returned...ah, such a nice curse it was to turn her into an orog...and no one even knew. Luckily, however, before the heroes killed her, Jellie established her identity.
Clearly battered, the heroes elected to return to Hommlet to rest and heal. Unfortunately, that meant walking all night and arriving a few hours before dawn on 10 / 5. Due to Soren's leg and Jellie's new form, the New Heroes would have to leave the group, although Cindari volunteered to stay behind and help the greenhorn. Two days of rest in the quiet town later and the heroes are ready to return to the Temple and deal with the minions of evil therein...
Next game will begin on the morning of 10 / 8 in the village of Hommlet. Everyone LEVEL UP!
