You know what's scarey? For years I wondered why Gandalf didn't basically do this -- have Gwaihir and his buddies at least get the group from Rivendell to Gondor or even Mordor. Sure, I could see the eagles being no match for the nazguls' flying mounts, but even just a quick trip to Gondor would have cut months off their journey and saved Boromir's life. Heck, from there Aragorn's distraction could have worked like in the clip...
My best guess is that the eagles were, like the elves, not supposed to take part in saving the Third Age. I read somewhere that the eagles, the über-dog, and the other animal-like sentients weren't actually people but some lesser/pseudo-mayar-wanna-bees.
Don't ask me; had we played out LoTR in my world, I'm sure someone would have pulled out something similar....

I'm what? Heck, the walk built character. Bout time those lazy little hobbits did something useful. Did they rallly behind Isldur to take Sauron out when it was possible? Nooo.....

Actually, there was a contingent of hobbits that went off to one of the "old wars" mentioned in one of the books. They never returned, and it wasn't clear WHICH old war, but they might have gone off to fight agains Sauron.
