The Flan refugees are convoying to safety when a group is attacked. Long branch, their handler, is slain by orcs, leaving Root, Taliesin, Gilgamesh, and Herzog to fend for themselves. They battle a pair of orcs and ten goblins as well as an ogre. Getting a hand on the attackers, they move to help other groups, saving five Flan and three elves in the process. They also battle quite a few more orcs, orogs, and ogres. In the end, these four slay all nearby attackers, though in the process, Herzog and Taliesin's black cat, Lucyfur, is hurt. The boy uses the last of Root's potion of healing to save his familiar after almost stabilizing Herzog. The shaman tend to the remaining wounded and continue the trek.
