Using his Dream Messanger spell, Two Rivers pulls himself and Jason into Michael's spell. Joining the rest of the heroes (Michael, Mas, Beyarkmar, Rhiannon, and Viktor) in the maze of thorns, the group battle two helmet horrors and reach the castle containing a fire-breathing dragon, only very narrowly slaying it using the golden dragon slaying sword. Meanwhile, Michael discovers some hints of his magical powers.
Next the group awaken naked, in Beyarkmar's nightmare, to be hunted by the less kind members of his own species, the Kzinti. The party battles a squad of nearly a dozen initiates seeking to earn adulthood by killing and eating another sentient foe. In the fight, Viktor's hip is shattered and Jason is forced to use feign death to put the young man to sleep at the end of the battle.
