The heroes' (Fridmarr, Slate, Dagna, Aolwai, and Viktor) caravan is attacked by verbeeg and their ogre masters. In the battle, Nimm and several other figures are harpooned by the giants and carried off at tremendous speed. The heroes fought off the ogres but weren't able to save the druid.
By first light Viktor leads the group to hunt down the giants and ogres, coming upon their lair in a cave midday. The group fights their way in, slaying ogres, orcs, and worgs. Viktor challenges the orcs to a leadership duel, which they cheat at, but the now-naked boy still slaughters them with his bare hands. The group battles to a dwarven lair deeper in the caverns where a strange grove of thorns grows. A centaur druid is trapped within -- he heals the group and offers his spells to helps defeat the monsters.
The group is blocked by mighty, dwarven gates. Once the centaur druid stone shapes opens the entrance, the heroes stealthily enter the joten lair. Slate takes out a hiding ogre guard and the heroes mow through the ogres and giants in their lair with fairly little effort, rescuing Nimm and seven other captives.
