After having mastered the Gem-Maze, Astrid, Giragar, and Locke are looking for an adventure. They're also looking to appease Baron Moorak, who isn't very happy that two of his younger children accompanied the group into the adventure. So, acting proactively, the group elects to do a mission for Rhannée, Black Robe, and Garlok. The group picks up Amber Foerender and Viktor StrongArm (as well as Garlok with Boomika and Timrith) and travels to the Howling Hills where they meet up with the military forces. The heroes mission is to take out a pernicious lair of ogres, trolls, hill giants, and orcs.
The group heads to the lair and scouts it out. A wide craggy opening leading to underground caverns. Viktor borrows Garlok's ring of invisibility to scout things out, but the cave bear catches his scent and forces the half-orc to flee. Later, the whole party except Giragar and Garlok flies to the top of the rocky outcrop while the elf and half-elf charge the entrance. Boulders from a stone giant and four hill giants wound Garlok and nearly slain Giragar. In the confusion, Viktor slips into the cave and Locke use his ring of animal control to take command of the bear. Garlok uses an ice storm from his ring to make things slippery and with Timrith, Amber, and Astrid's help, the group slays the guards.
They make their way down to the lower level where they battle four trolls and four ogres followed by a hill giant and his two carnivorous apes as well as more than three dozen ogres and thirty orcs. The battle is fierce and the heroes are victorious, but only just barely. Garlok is forced to draw strength from his familiar just to stay alive and Timirth is in terrible shape, as are Giragar, Astrid, and (to a lesser extent) Amber and Viktor. The group flees, leaving no living thing in their wake (or even having seen them!).
