While hunting in the Gnarley Forest near Klarr, Viktor StrongArm and Pacha came across the tracks of both bugbear and gnolls within a half day of town. The two rangers turned to Sheriff Dor Truebow for help, but the hobbit archer explained that patrolling that area was the duty of the towns of Nulb, Thistledown, and Tanorim. Viktor wanted to ask is mother and brother (both rangers) for assistance, but they and the rest of the family were in Amberwood, visiting with Rhanee. So, the two rangers decided to take matters into their own hands to protect their home. The two ask Kahana the monk and Lohaheel the shaman, both former adventuring companions, to join them. And in the Displacer, they met up with P'Tol, a fighter, and Michael, a half-elven bard, with his labrador retriever puppy, Boomika. Billi at first took issue with the puppy, until it was explained that she was actually a familiar and Michael a witch.
At Michael's suggestion, the group hiked by night to where Viktor and Pacha had seen the tracks. From there, in the morning, the group had little trouble following the prints to a series of limestone caves. The group entered the cavern complex and soon found themselves in a pitched battle with bugbear. As the fighters met the frontal assault, another group of bugbear attacked from the rear, forcing the bard-witch into melee. Somehow, though he couldn't hit even the floor with his throwing daggers, Michael managed to keep the rear fighting line...until he fumbled and Pacha had to save him, that is. Meanwhile, P'Tol and Kahana hacked and pashed their way through the other group of bugbears with Billi's help. Poor Pacha had a very difficult time and Viktor was nearly trapped and cut off. Ironically, while stunned, so too was Michael, but P'Tol charged to the half-elf's rescue. The group tended their wounds and continued, finding and rescuing a number of gnomes, humans, dwarves, and even a wood elf captive, who revealed that Michael was actually Prince Garlok Drake of Amberwood.
The group searched the bugbear lair and found a secret passage to another series of caverns where they battled a few fire beetles. Kahana wisely suggested the rangers track through the maze of tunnels and Viktor and Pacha realized that not only were these caverns the lair of a minotaur, but also how to get to the monster. The heroes met up with the minotaur, but instead of charging, they fanned out. Garlok then called down an ice storm on the creature and Pacha, who had grown out her magical horns in an attempt to speak with it, skewered the minotaur, killing it. P'Tol found a secret passage within which the creature kept its treasure and which had two exits.
Following one of these passages, the group encountered two POWERFUL glyphs of warding, the first of which nearly burned Billi to death and the second causing serious cold damage to Garlok. The group continued on until they met up with eight ghouls which attacked. The heroes narrowly survived; at one point everyone except Garlok and Lohaheel were paralyzed or dropped. But working together the bard-witch and shaman defeated the undead and saved the rest of the party. Out of healing magic, the group slipped out of the cavern complex and headed back to town to rest and recover....
