Heroes: Ravella the Mage, Arita the Halfling Warrior, Estrubia the Dwarven Ranger, Thera the Cleric of Athena, Estrella the Psi, and Kuur the warrior
A call goes out in Greyhawk for a paid job for heroes. Avoiding her family and new fiance and seeking some adventure before she settles down, the beautiful dark haired Ravella Dragonsbane shows up to see, much to her dismay, the Duchess DeShane and a man she does not recognize. The Duchess asks Ravella why she should put someone of some import in danger in which Ravella replies that she can handle herself. Offering to boost her up in exchange for a future favor, Ravella agrees as long as it does not hurt her family or the Gray Family. The duchess gives her some gold, advises her to meet with this particular person and receive an armor spell, then returns. When she returns, Ravella notices a kid talking to the man standing by the Duchess. The kid is 13, asian, natural red auburn wavy hair with a white strip in it. She introduces herself as Estrella and is a student of the man. The man then questions Ravella about why she is going and if she can handle herself. She responds that she will be just fine and begins talking to Estrella about what her vocation is as she has never heard of a psi. Then an unusual sight walks up. An unusually tall dwarf or a short human walks up. A full meticulously groomed beard and a bow in their hair confuses the party till they speak. She introduces herself as Rubella the Dwarven Ranger, but her friends call her Ruby. This induces an "Oh my!" from Ravella who then compliments the boy to cover her rudeness. Ruby seems sensitive about her size, so Ravella leaves it alone and continues talking to Estrella. Soon, a woman bearing a spear, royal blue robes, and long wavy black hair down her back shows up. The man sees her, smirks, and asks why Ariana has sent the woman. She is a Cleric of Athena and a disciple of a close frind of the two. She knows them as Kephalonia and Andar, but knows they like to hide their identities so does not mention this. Thera responds that she is there to keep the two of them out of trouble. Andar makes a sarcastic remark and Thera responds that she knows that is impossible, but here she is. Andar then attempts to use his psi powers to make Thera protect his student, Estrella. Surprisingly, he is immediately thrown out of her mind. He realizes that she is a natural psi and a powerful one at that. He asks if he can teach her. She says possible, but they would need Ariana's permission. After a quick mind communication, Ariana agrees to let her be taught so that the is a psi at the temple. Finally, a male halfling bearing a bow walks up and introduces himself as Arita the fighter. He states he prefers the bow, but has melee skills too.
Once the party is gathered, they are told they need to go to some ruins in the Bright Desert. Keph and Andar will pay for the travel costs and a desert outfit, but the rest is up to the group. They only request that they get the gems from the city of which there are 15 total, but all other treasure found is theirs. Andar also mentions to Thera that Estrella will help teach Thera about the basic psi powers. The group journeys to Hardby and receives some goods from Keph to assist. Ravella goes to the desert people living in this town and asks about the highland tribes, discovering how to discern the different tribes and how to not offend. Finding out they do not respect women, Ravella asks if she could pay the man to be their guide in the desert. He agrees and Kuur joins the party. During the trip to the southern part of the desert by boat, Thera asks Estrella to assist her in closing her third eye so that she too may communicate with Andar. Estrella teaches THera to close it. Once successful, another defense rises up. Taken by surprise, Estrella tells Thera an area wide defense just went up. They both work to bring it down, to only find another defense. Both are exhausted at this point, but Estrella is impressed by the strength of THera's psi powers and tells her she has the makings of a psi.
The group make it to the desert and start their 4 day long journey to the city ruins. On the first day, the party runs into a sand giant who then calls his two buddies to assist. The party takes out the first one and then meets the next two. After a fierce battle in which Kuur has decided to fight with the party instead of watching like Ravella told him to do, they take them both down. The rest of that day in uneventful as is the next day. On the third day, the party sees two manticore flying around. They are spotted and they start to strafe the party. Arita and Ruby bring down one by shredding its wing. This causes the other one to retreat and see what happens. The party takes out the grounded manticore as Ravella keeps an eye on the second one, ready to shoot it if it attacks. Estrella also exhausts herself by trying to control the manticore. She is successful, but it wipes her out. The other manticore sees its comrade fall and retreats. Thera was brought down though so the party bandages her up and waits till she becomes conscious. She eventually comes to and psi heals herself with the one power she knew about, Cell Adjustment. The party finally arrives at the ruins and sees two wyverns flying around. Not wanting a fight with something poisonous, they run to the ruins which the wyverns seem to be avoiding. They camp for the night.
On Ravell's watch, the final watch, she rests her eyes for a bit, being exhausted for not being used to this exertion. When she opens them, she stares in wonder. The ruins of the building they camped in is now whole as if it never was ruined. She wakes up the party and they are also all confused. Picking up camp, they move out of the house and see many building around them. They also see a fertile valley in the view beyond and a river. Seeing a bathhouse and being dirty, Ravella points to it and starts walking. Shrugging, the rest of the party follow. They enter the bathhouse to find this beautiful chipped marble room with a bathing pool in the center and a pile of rags in the corner. One thing is odd though, the pool is completely frozen. Ravella asks Ruby to start hacking the ice to see if a gem is in it. WHile Ruby is futilely hacking at the ice with a sword, Ravella searches the rags in the corner and finds a brazier. Getting an idea, she lights it with some kindling nearby and brings it to the ice. It melts instantly and the party sees a gem drop to the bottom. Estrella is the only one who can swim so Ravella asks her to swim down to the bottom and get it. She jumps in, grabs the gem, jerks and passes out. Ravella jumps in to get her and manages to without drowning. Thera heals Estrella. Arita then suggests grabbing the gem with a bag. Estrella does this, but the gem freezes the bag and encases it in ice, but it is retrieved. The party melts the ice by the brazier and then Ravella grasps the gem. She feels a resistance by the gem, but her magical powers are accepted and she can hold the gem. Victory! THe party then moves out of the building.
The next building they move to is the blacksmith's shop. Ravella exclaims," To the fire gem!" They enter and see a salamander working on a sword. The forge is hot, but there is no fire. Ravella asks the salamander if he knows of a gem in which he replies yes, and he will trade it for a magic item. They have no magic items, so Ravella says they will return. Not after trading two gems for two short swords given to Arita and Ruby. The party then moves to the mortuary. The room is in the shape of a coffin and covered in obsidian. There is also a counter also carved out of obsidian. A blueish glow emanates from the counter. Ravella searches the counter and finds five obsidian urns and three flasks of a clear liquid. Testing the liquid, Ravella nearly throws up when she discovers it is embalming fluid and taking some damage from that one sip. Arita then searches the urns after they see scratch marks under the counter like it should move. Four of the urns are just ashes and bones. THe fifth is filled with a super slick oil. Arita spreads some on the floor, allowing the counter to move easily. A gem that is electric blue is revealed. Ravella asks if anyone else wants to try for this one and they all refuse. Ravella picks it up and feels the same resistance, but nothing more. She has attuned to this gem as well. The party leaves the mortuary and moves to the bar.
As they walk to the bar, the party sees several gargoyles in the sky. Not wanting to fight them, they run into the bar and are greeted with a weird sight. The bar is full of patrons, drinking, gambling, and talking. There is one problem though. They are all skeletons. Ravella sees a dagger sticking into a table where poker is being played through the skeleton of someone slumped over the table. She asks if she can take the dagger and the players says yes, as long as she pays his in. She agrees, flips a gold coin on the table and grabs the dagger. Talking to the barkeep, he gets pissed that a dwarf is in his bar and not leashed or collared. Becoming indignant, Ruby starts sputtering, but Thera leads her outside so as to not cause a scene. Unfortunately, the gargoyles are waiting for them. Thera attacks and calls out to the party in the bar. They hear and come out. It is too late though as Thera goes down after killing one. Ravella casts magic missile, but it is harmlessly absorbed by the creature's magic resistance. They rest of the party charges in. Ravella, out of desperation, grabs the Ice Gem and thrusts it towards one of the gargoyles. Another resistance comes and goes, then a blast of ice shoots the creature. Ravella feels she can ramp it up and does so on the next hit. She feels the power accept her and a bigger blast of ice goes out. Soon, she is the only one left standing but she manages to take the last of them down with the gem. She comes back to the party, healing salves Thera with some bandaging help from Kuur. They drag everyone into the bar who promptly ignores her pleas for help. Finally, Thera comes up after a few hours and brings the rest of the party back up with cell adjustment and spells. They rest for the night in the house they had camped in before. When they awake though, the city is ruins again. They move out to communicate to Andar, but find an odd old man sitting on a treasure pile. Not wanting to tempt fate, they leave him be and relay all the information to Andar who is surprised at what they found and have fought. Ravella is also getting it in her mind to try and negotiate for one of these gems.
