The five heroes met before the old Victorian house. Imhotep was sent by visions from Ra and Qadir was sent by Osiris. Lilly and Rose, the young sisters were sent by Weejas. Finally, Gereth, a young rogue, heard of the house and the possible riches it held. The gods of the dead had told their followers of a house where the dead would walk again on a night when the barrier between life and death was thin. They must release the dead from their torment and end the curse upon its denizens. Qadir lead the group to the front door as a light rain started falling. After Qadir opened the door, Imhotep walked in to the entry room and followed by Gereth.
It was once a luxurious living room with comfy chairs, a desk, a rotting rug, and a well made fireplace cold and empty. Imhotep approached the painting, studying the lonely wizard painted on it. As he touched the painting, a chambermaid entered the room. She was followed by the man from the painting A ghostly blue apparition dusting the various pieces of furniture and followed by another ghostly figure. It was the man in the painting! They seemed to be talking and both were distressed about something. As Imhotep approached them to see if he could communicate, the two transparent figures disappeared. A few seconds later, the man reappeared at the desk, pouring over a book. He exclaimed he had found the secret to immortality and disappeared, leaving the ghostly book. At this point, the rest of the party came into the room to escape the rain and encroaching fog. Qadir lead his cat, Tac, into the room also, drawing a sigh from Imhotep which was pointedly ignored by Qadir. Imhotep quickly glanced at the book to see if he could garner any information from it and saw a passage stating "The secret to Immortality is the heart of an innocent virgin." Once this was read, the book disappeared, leaving the dusty desk bare beneath it. Searching the drawers, all that could be found is a scrap of what looks like the Master of the House's diary stating he was close to figuring his immortality out and he would be young again. He would be able to have the young Erica. Assuming Erica was the chambermaid, Imhotep took note and moved on, finding a locked drawer.
Gereth took this opportunity to try to pick the lock. Unfortunately, he was unsuccessful but was able to quicky avoid the poison trap. Once agility had failed the group, Imhotep asked Qadir to open the drawer with his flail. It worked like a charm, but the group was rewarded with only some more noted from the Master of the house detailing his plan further and mentioning a chamber that was prepared. The third chapter of the ghostly reenactment then came to them. The chambermaid was approached by the man again, but they started arguing. She slapped him hard which put him into a full rage. He reached his hand out into her chest, pulling her beating heart out and laughing. She falls down dead with barely a second glance from the man as he disappears. Where her body lay fades as he apparition rises from the floor. She looks at the party and pleads," Only you can free me and avenge my death. Please destroy my heart to free me and destroy him." Imhotep quickly asks if she can tell them where he is, but she fades away without responding. The party searches the room, finding nothing of importance. Out of frustration, Imhotep grabs the painting to see if anything lies behind it. Instead of moving, the painting comes to life. The Master of the House stands before them, a ghastly apparition. Her demands that the group sacrifice one of their number and the rest can go. Imhotep refuses which sends the apparition into a rage yelling he will take his sacrifice by force then and casts fear. It is largely ineffective except for the rogue who runs into the wall and Rose who stands petrified. They party engages him, but quickly realize their attacked cannot harm him. Imhotep is either not powerful enough or the entity is unaffected by his turn. Focusing on the paladin Qadir, he pulls out a ghostly looking heart from the paladin's chest, sapping his strength. The apparition then looks slightly more solid. The master looks decidedly more crimson and easier to see after he brings the paladin down. Imhotep swipes at the now red apparition and connects! He sees some blood get on his weapon as he nicks the ghost. Like a water balloon filled with blood, the ghost pops and blood falls to the floor. After checking the paladin for wounds, Rose declares him dead. Checking himself, Imhotep realizes he will get back up soon on his own. After a little bit of waiting Qadir gets up and eats the two good berries offered by Rose and is back to full fighting condition. He then becomes distressed as his cat is hiding under the desk hissing and swiping at anyone who comes near. Also, at this point, a heart beat can be heard as if on a loud speaker. Qadir realizes his heart is beating to the same beat and he hears it louder than the rest. Realizing there is no helping it, Qadir moves on and Lilly tries a half hearted attempt to get the cat out. Failing, she moves on hardly affected or concerned. With Qadir leading the way, they enter the one door leading further into the house. They find themselves in a hallway. To the right is stairs and to the left are three doors. Deciding to stay on the bottom floor, they methodically move to the furthest door on the left and open it.
They find themselves in a dining room. A once beautiful table with table settings now destroyed is occupied by four guests. Solid guests! When Qadir moves forward to investigate, he notices two things. The first is that these guests are decked out in the finest fashion from a hundred years ago and what they are wearing is rotted, stained and falling apart. The second is that these are zombies! Imhotep quickly turns the zombies, forcing them into the corner. The rest of the party, besides Lilly, set up to cut them down. All of them take damage, effectively ending the turn. Feeling overconfident, Imhotep attempts to turn again and fails. Lilly also attempts and fails. A combat ensues and the zombies are cut down, but not without hurting some of the party members and downing poor Gereth. Imhotep brings him back with a cure light wounds. Searching the room, they find nothing of interest and try the second door that lead to a kitchen.
The party searches the kitchen and finds nothing of value, even dropping a container of rotten flour on the ground. They do take note that they see a hammer, pick, trowel, and dried bucket of mortar. They look around to see if they see a wall or floor area that looks patched, but couldn't find anything. They decide to open one of the three doors out of the kitchen and see stairs going down to the basements.
Cautiously, Qadir leads the way down into the cellar where he sees cobwebs everywhere. As his eyes adjust to the new gloom, two dinner sized spiders leap at him. He sees them in time to spear one in the air, effectively ending its life. The second one gets in and Imhotep tries to help, but ends up flailing about not hitting anything. Qadir ends the life of the second spider and moves into the room. The cellar looks like it was converted into a lab with several beakers and bottles lying around. They clear the room of webs, searching for items and fixed patches. They are rewarded with four potions for their efforts. Two with one glyph on them and two with another. Trying the first potion, Imhotep realizes these are potions of healing. No one will try the second potion, fearing it was poison. Imhotep divides the potions between him and Rose. Finding nothing else, the move back to the kitchen and try the second door.
It opens to a pantry filled with hundreds of rats. After a staring contest, Qadir decides to throw flour on them. Not having any noticeably affect except a slight narrowing of their beady red eyes, the party decides to close the door and not chance a battle with those angry rats. Moving on, they open the last door from the kitchen.
They enter into a sun room. They have a full view of the now rampaging storm outside, flashes of lightning fill the room. Imhotep pushes past Qadfir and starts to search the room for anything of use. Unfortunately, he woke three large pythons waiting in the dying plants. One bites him, but fails to wrap him, while the other two miss him. The party charges up to help. Qadir handles one while Gereth handles the other free one. In the combats that ensues, Imhotep is wrapped by the snake and downed as is Gereth, neither really doing much damage to their own snakes. Lilly is also wrapped and crushed by the snake that downed Imhotep, cracking her ribs. Rose, Lilly, and Qadir finish off the snakes, all seriously injured. Rose splits a potion of healing between the two downed party members to bring them up. After searching the room, they find a small chest. Gereth easily picks the lock after finding no traps. Inside lay a glowing dagger, a potion of healing, and 8 gold pieces. They give the dagger to Lilly as she is the only one proficient in daggers and open the other door out of the sun room.
As they follow Qadir into the room, they hear the tick tock of a Grandfather clock that stands vigil in the corner of the room. It is a music conservatory with little of interest for the party. Imhotep approaches the clock to investigate it and jumps slightly when it starts to chime the hour. He looks at the clock face and sees it is 9 o'clock. As the final chime tolls, the master appears amongst the party declaring," If you will not give me what i want, I will take it by force." Casting a spell, the wooden floor warps and bucks. 5 wooden hands morph from the wood, each attacking a different party member. The party makes quick work of these and fixes the minor wounds with bandages and healing salves. Seeing nothing else of interest her after a search, the open the double door out of this room.
The dusty library stands before them with a desk on the far end. The room looks the least dilapidated so far and looks like it could be useable after some cleaning. Imhotep quickly steps over to the desk, noticing a silver lump and a black book. The book is covered by sinister looking runes and preferring not to set off a trap, he looks at the heart. It appears to be a human heart cast in silver. Realizing this must be the heart of the chambermaid, he asks Qadir to destroy it. An argument ensues as Qadir believes he is also tied to the heart and destroying it might kill him. This belief is only strengthened by the fact the heart softens and starts beating in tune with his own heart. Imhotep doesn't believe it, but rather than continue arguing, he opens the book, forgetting about the runes. Unfortunately, this set off a trap and two shadows come forth. This is very bad news as only one party member has a magical weapon. Attempting to help, Imhotep tries to turn the shadows and fails. Lilly hands the dagger to Qadir who hurts the first shadow while Imhotep fairy fires the second. Qadir goes down drained of strength and Gereth grabs the dagger to help. He hurts the fairy fired shadow and then also goes down as the shadows retaliate. Imhotep dumps a potion of healing into Qadir to bring him back up as Lilly is using the dagger to little effect. Her cracked ribs have hampered her. The first shadow goes down, but the others are helpless to assist the paladin in damaging the shadow. Qadir goes down again as the party keeps trying to distract the remaining shadow to allow Rose to help Qadir. She dumps the unknown potion into him out of desperation. It was an Elixir of Health! Qadir come back up fully healed and all of his strength back. Acting as decoys and targets, Imhotep and Rose manage to buy time for the paladin to destroy the last shadow. The fight severely weakened the party, but the persevere. Healing up, Imhotep tells the group of a passage in the book he read that states the chambermaid found a way to stop in a priest's book the master found in her room. Making that room a priority to find, they leave the library and find themselves back in the first hallway. Realizing they need to go upstairs, Qadir leads the way to a once lavishly appointed landing. Faced with two doors and neither looking like it could lead to a servant's quarters, they choose the left room.
They enter a woman's bedroom who seemed to have some taste. On a dressing table, there is a portrait of a young woman. Imhotep recognizes it as the chambermaid. Picking up the picture, it comes to life and says," Look behind me to find what you seek in the cellar." It then becomes lifeless again. Imhotep looks at the background behind her figure and realizes it is nondescript. He has an aha moment and flips the picture around. He finds a brass key. Pocketing it, they all move back to the cellar to look for loose mortar again. When the key enters the cellar though, a keyhole appears on the far side. Unlocking it, they find a passage down to a crypt with several skeletons in rusty chains occupying alcoves along the walls. Also, a large sarcophagus dominates the central part of the room. Realizing they do not have the health or power to handle the master right now, they go back upstairs in search of magic to assist them. They find the male servants quarters but quickly dispatch them with the assistance of Imhotep's turn. They find another dagger that Lilly takes.
They enter the final room that has been unexplored and find the spirit of a man behind a barricade. Quickly realizing they do not work for the master, he offers what aid he can. He tells them that his magic mace was taken by the master to the crypt, but if they destroy the master, the ghost will give them his last magic item. He also offers healing and aid to the party members. Now fully healed, they rush down to the crypt. Once they enter the crypt, two zombies rise up but are quickly sent fleeing by Imhotep's turn. They rush up to the sarcophagus and try to figure out how to open it. Noticing a silver heart shaped indentation, Imhotep tell Qadir to insert the silver heart. The sarcophagus opens quickly with a desiccated corpse crawling out. It is the master. He rages about how he is old and the spell failed. He was in there too long. This sends him into a rage and he attacks the party. Imhotep attempts to turn, but realizes this undead being is beyond his power. The party quickly realizes that normal weapons have no effect. Lilly throws the glowing dagger to Qadir and keeps the other one. They are both trying to hurt the monster, but are having little effect. Imhotep futilely searches the sarcophagus for the mace mentioned by the ghostly priest, but find no luck. Qadir goes down in one hit, prompting the Priest of Ra to abandon his search and dump a potion down the paladin's throat. Meanwhile, Gereth grabbled the magical dagger, inflicted some wounds on the undead beast then also went down. Rose moved to tend the rogue while her sister and Qadir kept the master occupied. Thinking the mace could be with one of the skeletons, Imhotep searches the first alcove and finds it decidedly lacking anything besides the skeleton. At that moment, Imhotep heard a loud cry of anguish behind him. Turning around, he sees Qadir standing over the dead body of the master. Everyone breathes a sigh of relief and quickly dispatches the two zombies cowering in the corner. They find a pile of loot, mace included, in one of the back alcoves. The heart crumbles to dust and the party hears a faint "Thank You" as Qadir feels a kiss on his cheek. They then return to the ghostly priest to let him know that the master was dead. He thanks them, gives them a luck stone and fades away. Their job done, the party leaves the house, collects Qadir's cat, and divy up the loot. They say their farewells as they each get taken back home by their gods, leaving Gereth alone to walk back to the nearest town that he came from.
