The heroes (Tiana, Ichi, P'Tol, Brünor, Malachite, Mikhail, and Darya) return to the limestone caverns east of Klarr the following morning, after Jasmine and Tiana attempted to corner Malachite. The young half elf didn't sleep in the Displacer but simply joined the heroes on the road in the morning. And once the heroes actually arrived, Mikhail and his wolf friend, Piotr, also joined the heroes. The group quickly descended into the bowels of the earth where Tiana (and later Mikhail) communicated with the mycnoid leader, King Portobello, and gaining safe passage through the fungi-folks' community.
The party then headed directly back to the drow caverns with Ichi (once again) triggering a fiery glyph. The spell did no damage, but it did alert the entire cavern complex to the party's presence, forcing them into a long, pitched battle with a giant slug as well as dozen and dozens of drow skeletons and shadows. Soon joining these foes were zombie gargoyles, zombie bugbear (all quite fresh), ghouls and ghasts, many trolls, and a pair of black puddings. The sheer number of foes overwhelmed the party and Tiana and Malachite were both paralyzed. Darya managed to unleash a couple spells to buy them time to recover and Malachite used his walls of fire to buy the heroes some breathing room and focus the combat. It was Ichi, though, who (somehow!) managed to fight off the majority of foes. Bruenor did excellent work keeping the undead busy, but not much else. At one point, a flight of five gargoyles joined the fray, but when Ichi took out almost all of them in about twice as many seconds, a second group of gargoyles saw this (and the many other dead foes on the ground) and elected to bail rather than die fighting the party.
The heroes tended to their wounds when they could and waited for the walls of fire to drop. Beyond, they had finally reached the black obelisk, but it was guarded by more than a dozen trolls as well as a huge earth elemental. At least a few drow were aiding their minions from the shadows as faerie fire swept up the entire party save for Darya and Mikhail. The heroes managed to hold their own and ultimately vanquished the foes they could see, though by the time the fight was over, there was no sign of the drow, who presumably fled back into the Underdark.
